I made a MUSHROOM DRESS inspired by Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Vintage Pattern) Emily Snee 2023-07-21 | It was so much fun to make this 1960’s mod dress inspired by Cece’s mushroom designs in Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom! The first time I saw the mushroom clothes in game was talking to one of the NPCs seeking Misko’s Treasure, and I absolutely fell in love with the entire concept of them! So, I’m team Cece all the way!I was really excited to use my 1962 Singer 306k vintage sewing machine and one of the vintage sewing patterns to make this dress. 18th Century Underthings? Patterning & Mocking up 1776 Half-boned Stays Emily Snee 2023-06-23 | I drafted this pattern and sewed this 1770s style corset, and I'm so happy with what I managed to make!Mandy Barrington's book provided really clear instructions for drafting the stay's panels and I'm so proud of myself for getting through the construction process! Making a *glamorous* Winter Coat || sew with me Emily Snee 2023-02-28 | I sewed a swing back jacket using the Butterick 5703 pattern from 1951 and it was such a joy! It was a really quick and easy sewing project to put together, and using the 1947 Singer Featherweight made it an even better experience!This style of overcoat would be a great first coat project for beginners who want to sew their own outerwear! Sewing 40’s style SUMMER CLOTHES from bedsheets (just in time for the end of summer 😭) Emily Snee 2022-09-04 | It was a lot of fun (and a lot of work) upcycling these bed sheets into some summer outfits/a new summer wardrobe, but I am SO HAPPY with how they came out!And while the splotchy fabric dye results are unfortunate, they're still totally wearable and I will absolutely be wearing them! Sewing with recycled or upcycled materials is always a bit of an experiment, but I enjoy having a cool me made wardrobe section enough that it makes all the surprises and mishaps worth it. 😅Also, I'm totally in love with how these vintage style/40s style trousers (or pants, for those on the other side of the Atlantic) look on me and fit me! What I Learned from this 1949 Dress Manual: Clothing for Moderns (a dramatic reading) Emily Snee 2022-08-13 | I read through my Grandmother's home economics textbook and OH BOY, was it hilarious! Saying that, I did learn a lot about fashion and sewing techniques of the late 1940's and what was thought of as right and proper for college women at the time.It's always fascinating to look through books like this that give so much context to the time period of the vintage clothing, sewing and fashion that I love! Punk Moiraine Aes Sedai Armour? I can make that! Featuring @bernadettebanner & @HazarielAtelier Emily Snee 2022-06-24 | Making this biker/punk interpretation of Moiraine Damodred's *iconic* leather bolero shoulder piece was so much fun!When I first watched Bernadette Banner's video about making her interpretation of this costume/cosplay and I heard the words 'motorcycle punk Moiraine', I just couldn't _not_ make it!I really enjoyed working with leather for the first time and definitely want to tackle more leatherwork (perhaps more leather armour) in future!If you haven't watched season 1 of The Wheel of Time, OMG GO WATCH IT!! It has a fantastically diverse cast in terms of race and body types, tonnes of strong female characters, complete acceptance of all orientations, polyamorous representation, and more humanity than I think i've ever seen in a fantasy show/film.Thanks so much to Ariel and Bernadette for taking time out to be excited about this project with me! I made a Halloween Bat Waistcoat! 🦇 (for an 1830s Nightmare Before Christmas Cosplay) 🎃 Emily Snee 2021-10-18 | I loved making this 1830s Menswear-style waistcoat! This is the first instalment in my -Gentleman Jack meets Jack Skellington- costume/cosplay and I’m thrilled with how it came out! I really wanted to use a spooky, halloween appropriate silk brocade to play into that 1830s late Regency/early Victorian niche of dandyism in men’s fashion, but I really struggled to find one! Easy NO SEW Thrift Flip! #shorts Emily Snee 2021-05-08 | I thrifted these summer clothes because I liked the shapes, but yellow isn't my thing. So what do you do with cute clothes that aren't your colour? DYE THEM! They were both made of polyester, so I needed to use a synthetic fibre dye. I made a 1950s Bullet Bra! Vintage Underwear gets a Psychedelic Makeover Emily Snee 2021-04-30 | I made a vintage style bullet bra MYSELF! WITHOUT a real pattern! Vintage undergarments and retro underwear are something I LOVE so I wanted to challenge myself, as a person with a fuller bust, to make a bullet bra (also sometimes called a torpedo bra or conical bra). I wanted to get that iconic pointy shape of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s to really round out some of my retro style looks, and I’m so happy that I finished it! It was really interesting to research and learn about! I had obviously seen what bullet bras looked like under clothing and seen pin up images of just the retro lingerie but the history was fascinating! And even though I was thinking the rockin’ fifties when I decided on the project, the bra I actually made was closer to the earlier bullet bras because of its lack of underwire.Although the closest cousin to the modern underwire bra was invented in the late 1920s, with one of the earliest patents for an underwire brassiere filed in 1929 by Helene Pons, the original bullet bras of the 1940’s were not underwired!During World War II, many ‘peace time’ industries stopped production and repurposed their business and factories towards the manufacture of weapons and military equipment to aid the war effort. The enormous need for metal for these purposes lead to shortages of metal and interruptions to the import of rubber from Asia. This coupled with the patriotic propaganda around salvage drives on the home front for materials like metal (which had minimal impact economically but significant impact on citizen morale) meant that the availability and wearing of corsets declined significantly. To fill the void left by the absence of their usual lingerie and the need for adequate support in the new jobs that many women were working the bullet bra, or torpedo bra, quickly gained popularity.The rise of the ’Sweater Girl’ in the popular culture of the late 1940s and the 1950’s, the increasingly dramatic shape of bullet bras because of improvements in technology and the addition of underwires, and their association with sex symbols like Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield kept the bullet bra in fashion well into the 1960s.I really enjoyed the challenge of creating this bra! I made a Discworld Book Nook! A ✨Magical✨ Nighttime Forest Bookshelf Insert with GLOWING STARS ⭐ Emily Snee 2021-04-10 | I made a book nook/book insert *thing*! I had no special model making supplies or experience making any kind of diorama or miniatures, so everything in this was a DIY! And I made almost everything you can see in the nook out of foam clay and household objects!I wanted to pay homage to my favourite Terry Pratchett Discworld books and my favourite character from them, Tiffany Aching. I’m really happy with how it came out and really proud of myself for making something this -cool- and this *pretty* with minimal materials. I made an Edwardian Bustle Pad: Bringing a 1903 Patent to Life. Reconstruction w Recycled Materials Emily Snee 2021-02-19 | I took on making an Edwardian bustle pad to make sure I had the right undergarments for a full costume I made. It was inspired by my favourite book The Night Circus by writer Erin Morgenstern and constructed for the Foundations Revealed 2021 Contest. It uses an expired 1903 American patent from one H.H. Taylor and I used the drawings as the basis for my pattern.I used scrap materials and it was a nice short and simple project. I Made Old Curtains into a Victorian/Edwardian Walking Skirt! 1895 Pattern - Keystone System/ Guide Emily Snee 2021-01-29 | This late Victorian/Edwardian walking skirt made with a 1895 pattern from the Keystone Guide to Jacket and Dress Cutting was actually a breeze to make. Making an Edwardian Gibson Girl Blouse from OLD BEDSHEETS and OFF CUT Lace (w no pattern 😬) Emily Snee 2021-01-22 | I made this Edwardian inspired blouse out of an upcycled bedsheet and some end-roll lace. I tried a historical 1903 shirtwaist pattern without success, so ended up draping and drafting the shirtwaist myself to get the size and shape right. I really wanted to achieve and emphasise that iconic Victorian/Edwardian pigeon chested silhouette, so used a lot of gathering in the front of the blouse and with the gathered puff sleeves. Dyeing My Hair with BLACK Henna (Ive Never Used Henna Before...) Emily Snee 2021-01-18 | Well, it was an interesting process. For anyone who's concerned about henna smelling bad - I personally find it more pleasant than the ammonia and peroxide in commercial hair dyes. As for the mess, it was messy but not that much messier than standard box hair dye (although that may just be me...)I’m happy with the results, and before anyone yells at me in the comment section - I now know that black henna can be dangerous and WHY it can be dangerous. However, the dye that I used very clearly states that it's free of PPD and heavy metals, and that the formulas have been tested under medical supervision.
