HIGH VOLTAGE | UNPLUGGED AT PIKES PEAK - Behind The Scenes Documentary Unplugged Performance 2021-06-10 | When you’re racing on the limit along the winding mountain roads of Pikes Peak, there’s a fine line between success and failure. With road and weather conditions shifting constantly, even purpose built vehicles struggle to make it to the top. They say it’s almost guaranteed that something will go wrong for each team during race week and your job as a driver, a race team, or a team manager, is to mitigate that risk as much as possible just to get your car to the top of the mountain. On race day, you’ve only got one shot and everything you’ve been working on for the last year needs to survive 156 turns to get to the top of the 12.42-mile road.Last year, we took on the challenge of Pikes Peak International Hill Climb for the first time. With our favorite racecar driver, Randy Pobst at the helm of a modified Model 3, we were filled with excitement and potential. Tesla Plaid Sets Laguna Seca Lap Records! Sparks Fly at GridLife! Unplugged Performance 2023-10-27 | Dark Helmet just lit up the corkscrew at GridLife Laguna finals. The weekend was a celebration of diverse speed and innovation, and the Unplugged Performance Tesla Model S Plaid, Dark Helmet, was a silent killer at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. With a podium finish and two incredible track records, Dark Helmet showcased the immense potential of electric vehicles on the track, and we couldn't be prouder.Development driver, Craig Coker, was the maestro behind the wheel clocking a remarkable lap time of 1:26.7, securing a well-deserved podium finish, as well as setting two new records. Dark Helmet is now the fastest EV, and the fastest sedan to ever lap Laguna Seca. To put this in perspective, Dark Helmet is faster around Laguna Seca than hypercars McLaren Senna, P1 and Porsche 918. Craig achieved another first for Dark Helmet, an astounding 2.5 lateral G's in cornering thanks to Yokohama A005 slicks. Pikes Peak 2023: Day 5 - Lower Section Qualifying Run & Recap - Quest for “Fast 15”! Unplugged Performance 2023-06-25 | After being rained out on Thursday, we returned to qualifying in the lower section of Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. UP and Randy continued our quest to achieve the “Fast 15”, an award that goes to the fastest 15 drivers out of the overall 66 in all classes. It is respected and viewed as an incredible achievement and honor for everyone that earns it. Coming within ~1 second of the 2200lb Radford race car, we secured 2nd in class for qualifying, a position in the top 10, and needless to say, achieved our goal of earning Fast 15 for the 4th consecutive year. Despite an unexpected problem that led to severe power loss, Randy absolutely crushed it. With an official qualifying time of 4:04.561, we are confident we would have achieved a sub 4-minute run had we maintained proper power levels throughout the run. Tesla Model 3 Lap Record - Bionic Phoenix dominates with insane grip. Full send! Unplugged Performance 2023-04-14 | Built by Unplugged Performance, the Bionic Phoenix continues to rise from the ashes of its massive crash at Pikes Peak in 2020, and is on a quest to see what a Tesla Model 3 is capable of. We reset the Buttonwillow CW13 Model 3 Lap Record (1:48) with Craig Coker behind the wheel during this brief 3-hot lap shakedown at Tesla Corsa on April 2nd, 2023. We know this is still early in this stage of development for Bionic Phoenix. The progress of Phoenix shows potential, and the road map is far from complete. Although, as you can see on the incredibly smooth lap video, we now have the aero and suspension components so dialed in that the driver can be flat out on the accelerator for most of the lap due to the insane levels of grip and road holding now present in the current iteration of the build. Bionic Phoenix is continuing on its current mission of testing the absolute maximum performance possible with standard off-the-shelf Tesla Model 3 Performance battery, motors, and software. Also, despite the extensive carbon fiber bodywork, this car is closely comparable to a standard Model 3 Performance due to the Pikes Peak-spec roll cage, remaining from the original incarnation of this car. A heavy high power car is not typically the recipe for a fast time on a course like this; however, with our Plaid race setup, this car never ceases to amaze. Dark Hemet 2.0 Shatters EV Record at Buttonwillow Raceway - Unplugged Performance Model S Plaid 1:43 Unplugged Performance 2022-11-15 | We took Dark Helmet out to play at the Global Time Attack Finals at Buttonwillow Raceway. The car remained unchanged from our Pikes Peak 2022 spec. The hefty 4,898lb weight with driver puts it into a class of one. Ladies and gentlemen, the heavyweight champ is here!We went into the event while still holding the previous EV track record of 1:47.8. Our driver @FromWhereICharge went out and shattered our previous record with a 1:43.2 run at Buttonwillow Raceway (13CW). This is in the ballpark of 20 seconds faster than a stock Model S Plaid.Dark Helmet reached a record time using UP's customer product offerings. The only pure race items on the car not for sale on our website are the lower diffusers and rear wing, which were added onto our existing S-APEX carbon widebody package.Tire inventory has been scarce this year, and we utilized some of our used @YokohamaMotorsports A005 slicks for the event mounted on our UP-03 race wheels. Thankfully our used slick inventory got us through the weekend with multiple low 1:43 second runs. Pikes Peak 2022 Raceday Full Run! Racing Blind To 14,115ft in UP Tesla Model S Plaid Dark Helmet! Unplugged Performance 2022-06-28 | What is more terrifying than a high speed run up Pikes Peak with massive fog, wet conditions, and those high speed blue sky corners with no guardrails? A windshield that fogged up directly in line of sight and having to finish the race up the mountain fully blind!Watch as @randypobstofficial has a great run spoiled by a fogged windshield. He tries dropping the windows but it doesn’t help! He loosens his harness and tries wiping the windshield with his hand while racing but doesn’t help! The defroster was on the whole race but it didn’t help! Dark Helmet’s Pikes Peak Rodeo At The Top! Final Testing. Splitter, Diffuser & Asphalt Destruction! Unplugged Performance 2022-06-25 | During yesterday's practice session we wanted to optimize our setup for the Pikes Peak Rodeo that is the upper section’s horrible road conditions this year. Unfortunately, going off road and smashing into Martian rocks destroyed the front splitter’s metal internal frame and also damaged the support structure above it. We also damaged the rear diffuser after going airborne and taking chunks out of the asphalt!We are flat out working to repair the car for the race on Sunday and must test again at local Pueblo track Saturday morning. It is really hard to set up a time attack aero car to do an off-road rodeo on the upper section! We are doing our best to optimize the massive adjustability of our UP X Ohlins TTX 4 way shocks for an environment like no other and meanwhile keeping the stiff springs and low ground clearance our aero needs to work. Doing some high speed rebound tuning and last minute packer adjustments. Unplugged Performance 2022-06-24 | Today Dark Helmet set the second-fastest time overall across 72 competitors through the middle section of the Pikes Peak course. The UP team continues to hone in a fast setup for Sunday! With each day the car gets dialed in and has picked up significant pace. At 4900lbs there’s never been a production based race car quite like it!Our time of 2:27 puts us 3 seconds ahead of the second place LMP3 car in our class for the day and surprisingly topped the fastest times in Unlimited class cars as well. Pikes Peak 2022 Qualifying: 5 seconds faster than last year! Randy Pobst lap and commentary. Unplugged Performance 2022-06-23 | Dark Helmet continued to challenge the physics of a 4900lb (with driver) four door production based EV race car. 141mph speeds today! We managed to be 5 seconds faster than last year’s 4:10 run despite having 70% battery at the start of todays 4:05 second run. We were running reduced brake regen to gather more data on brake temps and thermal limitations as we try to find the sweet spot for race day setup. The UP Ohlins TTX 4 way Pikes Peak spec coilovers and race aero are getting tuned in day by day for this challenging course. More tuning and another all nighter coming up…We remain proud by the way of our 2020 UP Model 3 Phoenix qualifying time of 4:12 which has stood the test of time. Comparing Lap Times To A Porsche 991 GT2 RS!? 1:49.9 in UP Tesla Model 3 Ascension- R Buttonwillow Unplugged Performance 2022-04-04 | When we began our Tesla Model 3 based Ascension-R complete car program we set an audacious lap time benchmark, the Porsche 991 spec 911 GT3 RS. The GT3 RS is one of the world's greatest driver's cars on any race track. We challenged ourselves to create a cohesive daily driven Tesla Model 3 upgrade package that can provide all of the benefits of an electric four-door sedan with two trunks and Autopilot, yet one that can transform into a Porsche 911 GT3 RS rival on race track's like Buttonwillow. People thought we were insane to even reference the revered 911 GT3 RS as a benchmark. Yet here we are with this lap time. In fact the fastest lap of the even faster 991 911 GT2(!) RS with a great pro driver and overall top Buttonwillow lap-time record holder Will Wattanawongkiri is recorded at 1:50.4, meanwhile, we clocked a 1:49.90 with our friend Craig Coker behind the wheel in one of our spec-built Tesla Model 3 Ascension-R complete cars. This is not a fully gutted, giant winged purpose-built race car. That purpose-built race car of ours is coming along next. We expect it to be a lot faster.So, is our 1:49.90 lap apples to apples with the latest spec 911 GT2 RS lap of 1:50.42? Of course not, it can't be summed up that simply. Valid arguments can be had on both sides. The crazy thing though, and our goal with this project is, a debate can be had comparing a Tesla Model 3 with our bolt-ons vs the ultimate price is no object, track-focused weapon from Porsche, the $400k+ 991 911 GT2 RS. This video now illustrates that if you put both on the track and drive them both flat out you have an improbably close outcome! This is not comparing pro to amateur driver, this is comparing lap times of Will W who is arguably the top driver in FastestLap rankings at Buttonwillow vs Craig Coker who has risen up the ranks at TeslaCorsa and is a close friend of ours. Who is faster, Will vs Craig? We don't know but Will surely has more seat time at the track and holds a ton of records there. We think both are talented drivers and this makes it an interesting comparison.Let's list out some of the key arguments on both sides:Porsche 991 911 GT2 RS:Price is $400k+. This is the ultimate in production street-legal Porsche track car at any price. They don't bother with back seats, it comes with custom compound barely street-legal Michelin Cup 2 R tires at 325 wide rear formulated to get within the limits of DOT legality for fastest lap times. The suspension is factory race-tuned and is very firm. The aero is extreme for maximum factory downforce. The car has lightweight mods from the factory including carbon fiber, magnesium and lexan. The car comes with large 6 piston carbon ceramic brakes. The car has wider front/rear fenders compared to the standard 911.Unplugged Perfomance Tesla Model 3 Ascension-R: Price is base car + approx $60k parts and labor included for a total of approx $120-130k depending on Tesla pricing of the day. The car has 4 doors, two trunks, seats 4, has full interior and creature comforts and runs on electricity. For track duty, the street tires are swapped out for 19x11 UP-03 wheels with 310 wide Yokohama slicks and the UP sports bucket seat is swapped in for more lateral support. This particular car has almost no light-weighting (UP race parts like lexan glass replacements, UP dry carbon doors, carbon hood and carbon trunk are not used). This particular car has our street aero which is low drag for neutralized range impact. The rear spoiler is low and out of view of the rearview mirror for stock visibility. The front splitter is reasonable in height and length for a daily driven car. No race aero here. The car is modified with UP's quiet brakes which are oversized carbon ceramic 6 piston brakes similar to the Porsche's. The car has all bolt-on upgraded adjustable suspension components. Bionic Phoenix Shakedown 360 View - Unplugged Performance Model 3 Bare Chassis Test Run Unplugged Performance 2022-04-04 | Following the crash at Pikes Peak 2020, the Unplugged Performance Model 3 race car has been reborn as "Bionic Phoenix." With a center seat configuration and a multitude of new upgrades, the car will eventually compete in time attack. TeslaCorsa was the first time it had run under its own power since just after Pikes Peak 2020. The build is in progress and this was just an initial shakedown of new components and driving position.The irony is that full aero is coming for this race car, yet in this video it is as un-aerodynamic as possible. It is a complete blast to drive this car wide open and our friend & driver Craig Coker ran a 1:53 with this awkward but completely wild setup. Note that the suspension is extremely stiff and setup for very limited travel in preparation for the massive downforce of our CFD'd racing aero kit. Unplugged Performance Tesla Model S Plaid - Dark Helmets Laguna Seca 1:28.21 Lap with Randy Pobst Unplugged Performance 2021-08-03 | Coming off of the car's Pikes Peak class win the Unplugged Performance’s Tesla Model S Plaid aka Dark Helmet clocked a 1:28.21 lap during TeslaCorsa 16 at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca. Randy Pobst was behind the wheel piloting the modified 4850lb (with driver) family sedan to an EV modified lap record which saw a top speed of 156mph. Pikes Peak 2021 UP Tesla Model S Plaid - Discussion With UPs Ben Schaffer Unplugged Performance 2021-06-29 | Pikes Peak 2021 was a whirlwind of no sleep and crucial deadlines. Usually we make time for interviews but this year was intense and every minute counted. This impromptu video serves as our only live interview during race week. It explains our motivations, our mission, our excitement about Tesla Plaid technology, and represents our anxious excitement leading up to race day. The interview ironically was filmed at a Pikes Peak fan event held in front of Porsche Colorado Springs. We had a little joking fun with the fact that we had our Plaid Tesla Model S parked in front of the Porsche dealership and drawing a crowd. It is all one family though as the Porsche dealership is owned by our Colorado Springs partner who also owns our UP dealer and Pikes Peak home base facility Eurocars Collision.
