Doug PerryWhat if the Asriel battle at the end of the Undertale pacifist run was actually a super fun rock concert?
Happy Undertale day! Undertale turns 2 years old today, so I wanted to pay it tribute with a project I've been working on for close to two years now. This is probably the most ambitious arrangement and video I've ever done, involving me going the furthest out of my comfort zones as an arranger, producer, and videographer!
Playing the Asriel battle in Undertale was a really moving experience for me. The exciting music, vibrant colors, moving dialog...it was a real whirlwind of emotions for me, that at times struck me at a very personal level. After processing that moment of the game for a while, I started to envision a slightly different take on the battle. What if, instead of fighting Asriel, he just threw an awesome concert?
As a kid, I always wanted to be a rock star, and maybe Asriel always wanted to be the Ultimate God of Hyperdeath. I just turned 30 this year, so perhaps this is too early to call my mid-life crisis, but getting to be a rock star was really fun (even if I was just rocking out in my living room with a Guitar Hero controller).
This is a pretty special video for me, and I know it's a lot different from what you'd typically expect to see on this channel. I hope you have as much fun watching this as I did making it!
UPDATE 10/10/17: I made a vlog talking about this video--you can watch it here:
ALSO I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT TO GIVE RICHAADEB A SHOUTOUT! Rich gave me some awesome advice while I worked on this. Please check out his channel here!

The etude explores a short rhythmic pattern and the harmonic development thereof. This piece is written in honor of his former composition instructor, Curtis T. Stotlar." - Steven Hewitt
Since I began performing video game music on Twitch, I've gotten to meet a wonderful intersection of musicians from both the game music world and the contemporary percussion world. My first encounters with Steven were in my Twitch chat, and I actually didn't know he was a composer until he approached me with this piece! I'm always excited to see composers writing new works for percussion, and I'm happy he engaged me to record this work.

The soundtrack to Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite video game soundtracks of all time, but I feel in love with this piece through Jillian Aversa and Reuben Kee's beautiful arrangement of it on OverClocked Remix many years ago. I can't help but be influenced by their highly expressive interpretation of the work whenever I play it! This past Thursday (November 21st) was actually Mitsuda's birthday, so I played a lot of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross that day. Happy birthday Yasunori Mitsuda, and thank you for all the great music!

It was commissioned by Max Farbman in 2014, as a gift for his former percussion instructor, Lia DeRoin. This piece is based around a short, repeating rhythmic pattern, and a simple melody. In the spirit of gratitude, it is written with best wishes for Lia in all of her future endeavors, wherever they may take her.

Growing up, I listening to a lot of jazz vibes players, and was a big fan of musicians like Milt Jackson, Stefon Harris, and Lionel Hampton. One vibes player who made an undeniable impression on me was Gary Burton, who developed the technique I use when I play vibes. Gary Burton's technical facility and command of the instrument is pretty incredible, and I've always aspired to be able to accompany myself the way he can. This improvised arrangement is a good example of the kind of playing he inspired me to endeavor for!

Here's a mashup of Dragon Roost Island from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and the traditional holiday tune, Carol of the Bells.
When this request came in, I remember noticing my mods react with confusion, not really knowing what I was supposed to do. I just decided I would use my looping station to loop the main Carol of the Bells motif, and then figure it out from there. It took me a second to get into the groove, but I had a lot of fun with this one!
I hope you all have a safe and restful holiday break. It's been a tough year, but I'm looking forward to better days to come!

This was from a live learn request, where I listen to the original piece and transcribe it, live on stream. The original track from Mass Effect featured lots of celluar layers that would ebb and flow in and out of each other, so I used that concept to create looping layers. It ended up going on for a long time, but I think it was worth it!
Some parts of this video have been edited to reduce/remove unnecessary noise and/or talking. I also forgot to grab my snare drum, which you'll see about a third of the way in!

This highlight is a little different from my normal content! While I normally focus on playing percussion instruments, this particular stream was done while I was nursing a sprained ankle, and couldn't play marimba properly. Since I couldn't really stand, I decided to do a piano stream instead.
I fell in love with this song a few summers ago, and have always sung and played it for myself. In this stream, someone requested a "streamer's choice" selection, so I decided to sing and play this one! As much as I love video game music, there's plenty of other music I enjoy as well. Final Fantasy VI was one of the first JRPGs I ever played, only playing it from time to time when visiting my childhood friend KDXanatos (twitch.tv/kdxanatos). When I finally played the game in earnest when I was in high school, I was blown away by the detail, depth, and of course, music of the game. Forever Rachel is a heartbreaking piece of music, and I thought performing it as a solo marimba work would suit it's somber tone well.

This was arrangement for the Musician's Sprint Challenge, in which we only had 3 hours each to arrange, perform, record, and produce a music video for a piece of my choice from a selected game! I chose Soul Sanctum from Hollow Knight, and performed it on marimba and vibraphone.
I actually had a pretty tough time with this challenge. I had lots of ideas going into it, but had no time to do any of them! It really made me think a lot about my own process and efficiency when making music, but also reminded me that no matter what, making a good product will always take time. Regardless, I hope you enjoy this short rendition of Soul Sanctum from Hollow Knight!

edit: I am the worst and spelled Nobuo Uematsu's name wrong TWICE in this video, please ban me from YouTube
This is actually a pretty old arrangement of mine - about five years ago, the remake of Final Fantasy VII was announced. Of course, everyone was very excited about it, and one of my game audio Facebook friends named Sebastian Wolff posted a call to see if anyone would be interested in contributing to a big Final Fantasy VII fan album. I (alongside many others) expressed interest, and before I knew it, I was neck deep in an album that would come to be known as "MATERIA: Final Fantasy VII Remixed", as part of a group that would come to be known as Materia Collective. I got involved just after finishing school, and I look back at this time fondly; I learned some of the skills and made some of the connections that I still enjoy in my professional life to this day.
I completely expected myself to contribute something percussion-oriented to this album, so I was just as surprised as everyone else when I started working on this glitchy, pop vocal arrangement of "Desert Wasteland". I wanted to write a song about the tumultuous relationship between Barrett and Dyne - there's a lot to unpack here!
Now that the FFVII remake has been released (and I'm stuck at home in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic), I was inspired by watching my game music friends release their own FFVII covers and ran outside to film this lyric video. This arrangement will always hold a special place in my heart, so I'm excited to finally share it on YouTube!
Special thanks to Wilbert Roget II for his guidance and advice producing this track, and to my undergraduate poetry teacher, Hollis Robbins, for teaching me everything I know about writing lyrics. --- Buy MATERIA: Final Fantasy VII Remix here: bandcamp.materiacollective.com/album/materia-final-fantasy-vii-remixed

Wilbert Roget IIDoug Perry2019-03-10 | Happy to finally post this percussion and flute cover of "Shevat, the Wind is Calling" from Xenogears, featuring my good friend Wilbert Roget II on Flute! Originally composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, I arranged this for marimba, vibraphone, steel drums, glockenspiel, flute, and lots of other percussion instruments. You probably know Wilbert Roget II as a game composer, having scored Call of Duty: WWII, Guild Wars 2, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, and the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11. What you might not have known is that he's an excellent flute player and improviser as well!
I've been wanting an excuse to arrange this for a long time, and that excuse finally made itself available to me when the Materia Collective began a Xenogears arrangement project. I played Xenogears for the first time not terribly long ago, and it left a very strong impression on me. It was actually Will who convinced me to play it, and ever since, I had dreamed of collaborating with him on an arrangement from the game. I'm so happy he was willing to work with me on this--not just as a performer, but with his sage advice on the audio production of this track!
This track was released on "Omega: A Tribute to Xenogears" by the Materia Collective under the title "Those Who Went Above the Ground", and is available for purchase on Bandcamp here:
Once again, it's been a while since I've posted a new video. I'm very happy to say that I'm getting more work as a percussionist, but that also means I'm getting busier! So, when I noticed in the middle of the summer how little money I had, I realized "this must mean I have time to do another cover!"
Waterfall is one of my favorite tracks in the game, and I've wanted to do something with it for a while. For this track, I wanted to make sure I had lots of mellow, resonant, and metallic sounds, so I borrowed my neighbor Alex's glockenspiel (another percussionist who lives down the street? How convenient!) and busted out the steel pans. I also recorded while live on Twitch, so folks could watch the process and how it works.
With this cover added to the collection, I realize I have a small but diverse pool of music that hasn't been released anywhere except my YouTube channel. Perhaps an Undertale EP is in the near future :)

I haven't uploaded a video in a little while, but that's because I've been working on lots of other things! Check out this video to hear a little bit about what I've been up to for the past few months, and where you can see my most recent output.
I've known Andrew "zircon" Aversa for quite a long time. We became friends on OverClocked Remix back when I was in college, and I started working for his sample library company Impact Soundworks in 2010. Over the past couple years, he has impressively worked on Tangledeep almost entirely by himself, and just recently released it. When he asked me to contribute to it's soundtrack's remix album, I knew I couldn't pass that up.
I love arranging music from my favorite games, but there's something special about arranging music written by your friends. In addition to doing most of the coding gruntwork, zircon also scored the entire game (minus a few tracks by guest composers Norihiko Hibini, Grant Kirkhope, and Hiroki Kikuta!). This soundtrack really brings me back to the SNES era of games like Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana, and he did a fantastic job of encapsulating that essence. If you like roguelikes and dungeon crawlers, I definitely recommend checking this game out!

As much as I've enjoyed playing video game music on marimba, I've always wondered what the possibilities would be to hear original music on marimba by some of my favorite game composers. I've known (and been a fan of) Disasterpeace for a long time and have always dreamed about being able to performing his music!
I reached out to Disasterpeace to see if he would be interested in spending a week with me at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute to participate in their New Music Initiative, which encourages performers to collaborate with composers at Avaloch Farm to produce new music. Much to my delight, he agreed to work with me there. We spent a week together in July; by the end of the session, he had composed this work for marimba.
Special thanks to everyone at Avaloch Farm (especially Fred Tauber, Deb Scherr, Mike Compitello, Hannah Collins, and Pete Novom) for facilitating the opportunity to bring this piece to life. Special thanks to Alec Rice and Alex Nizet, as well as the Western Connecticut State University, for helping me record this piece. And of course, thanks to Disasterpeace for taking a week out of his busy life to work on this project with me!

Triplepoint Trio and New Morse Code (original composition)Doug Perry2017-11-30 | The first piece of chamber music I've ever had performed, Shattered Structure is a post-minimalist work for vibraphone, glockenspiel, triangles, cymbals, cello, and bass. It was written at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute for Triplepoint Trio and New Morse Code, and premiered at the University of Kansas on November 19, 2017.
---
Last year, New Morse Code approached my trio (Triplepoint) to see if we would be interested in collaborating with them as composers. New Morse Code is a cello/percussion duo that loves to work with composers to create new music, and have worked with many composers that I have the utmost respect for. Needless to say, we were flattered when they reached out to us, and enthusiastically agreed to work with them. We spent about two weeks together at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute, where Jonny, Sam, and myself went into full-fledged composer mode and started writing. It was a really valuable learning experience for us, and we were able to come up with a few works for them--either for just their duo, or the five of us together.
Shattered Structure is, for all intents and purposes, the first piece of chamber music I've ever had performed. The instrumentation of our combined ensembles tends to lend itself well to big, bass-heavy sounds, so I wanted to write something that would focus more on the higher-end of the timbrel spectrum. I've also always been a fan of minimalism and the composers influenced by that movement--with respect to this piece, David Lang and Arvo Pärt were major influences.
Special thanks to Michael Compitello and Hannah Collins of New Morse Code for making this happen, as well as the University of Kansas School of Music for having us. It was so nice to get to perform at my alma mater again!

Happy Halloween! I wanted to celebrate this spooky time of year by posting a project I put together while attending MAGFest Laboratories (aka MAGLABS) in September of this year. My friend and collaborator Brian "Nautilus T Party" Diamond was visiting from Scotland, and I realized that this was a great opportunity to use his voice in a cover I've always wanted to do. Night in the Woods takes place around this time of year, and has some very spooky undertones to it--I figured it was the perfect choice for a Halloween cover!
There's a lot of great music in Night in the Woods, but Die Anywhere Else is easily my favorite track from the game. When I was a kid, I ALWAYS wanted to have a band. Watching Mae and her friends rock out in their band really brought me back to those years. I want to thank Brian, Ben Wallace, and Sam and Pete Bobinski for being the garage band I always wish I had. Special thanks to MAGLabs, Jamspace, and the Shizz for their appearances in this video.

Woohoo!ASGORE (male vocal Undertale cover) - arr. Jeremiah George ft. Doug PerryDoug Perry2017-04-01 | Edit 4/2/17: Happy April Fool's day :)
----
I've been a huge fan of Jeremiah George's arrangement of ASGORE for a long time, but there's been one problem with it that I (and many astute YouTube Commenters) have noticed--it was sung by a female singer! Surely, this makes no sense--Asgore is clearly the exemplary example of masculinity in modern video games today. It makes no sense for this to be sung by a female voice!
Thankfully, I was able to step up to the plate and provide the proper, male interpretation that this arrangement has needed. I hope you enjoy ASGORE!

So last night, I threw together this piano/vibraphone jazz arrangement of ASGORE inspired by their style. It's a really awesome album, you should check it out!

This is my arrangement of Mystic Cave Zone from Sonic 2, which was my major contribution to the album Mobius: Sonic the Hedgehog Remixed. This arrangement was actually done about seven years ago, but I never finished it. When Mobius came about, I realized I had a great opportunity on my hands!
I'd like to give a massive shout-out to all of my amazing collaborators in this video. I was so fortunate to get to have every part I wrote performed live, and I couldn't have done it without you guys! Please subscribe to their channels if you haven't already!
