Join us in June for our final Seriously Entertaining of the season! Come see war reporter and Blake-Dodd prize recipient Janine di Giovanni; acclaimed writer and translator Daniel Nieh; award-winning novelist and professor Ivy Pochoda; and New York Times-bestselling science writer Eliot Schrefer dazzle the audience with stories tied to the theme “All That Glitters.”
"After listening to her EP, Made Out Of Stars, I'm convinced that Steele herself is made out of heavenly, cosmic stuff. Sporting a million-watt smile, a voice as clear and bright as a bell, and a heart of gold, Steele’s music sounds like a good friend—the kind you call when you need lifting up. One of the pleasures of female-driven pop is its ability to tap into the anthem of the self: the best female pop vocalists amplify positive feelings and give us hope that we can transcend obstacles. And when music’s as good as Made Out Of Stars I think we all get to shine a little.” - Merryn Johns, Curve Magazine
Tony will be honoring the music of Earl Scruggs, pioneer of the three-finger banjo style and one of the most important musicians in bluegrass, or, in Tony’s opinion, in any genre.
Trischka recently came into possession of extremely rare recordings of jam sessions with Scruggs and John Hartford, and he’s transcribed and recorded Scruggs’s note-for-note solos from a number of these. Many songs that Earl had never recorded.
An album of this music is in production with a new label formed by some of the founders of Rounder Records and includes a number of bluegrass luminaries.
Together with his ace band—Michael Daves on vocals and guitar, mandolinist Jacob Jolliff, Brittany Haas on fiddle, and bassist Jared Engel— they will trace the story of Scruggs from his childhood to his final years. This show debuted at Joe’s Pub in New York City which drew lots of interest including an appearance on the Grand Ole Opry, a rarity for a banjo player these days.
“Earl is my North Star, a lifetime pathway. And I’m not alone,” says Trischka, a banjo innovator and educator who has influenced everyone from Béla Fleck to Steve Martin. “Through his music, this shy kid from Flint Hill, North Carolina went on to enrich countless thousands of lives. At the age of 13, when I first heard 16 notes of Scruggs style banjo playing, I put down my folk guitar and mercilessly pestered my parents to buy me a banjo. Once in my hands, that 5-string became my obsession and has been for 60 years.”
He adds, “the depth of his genius becomes ever more apparent when I transcribe his solos, which I’ve been doing my entire musical life and with renewed vigor. Discovering new twists and turns in his playing is pure joy and in fact the inspiration for this tribute show and album.”
"Tony Trischka is known as the father of modern bluegrass" – The New York Times

As part of her residency at The Movement Lab at Barnard College, LaTasha collaborated with dancer/creative technologist/multimedia artist Allison Costa to create a visual and sonic reanimation to accompany the book.
Joining her will be composer and instrumentalist Kaoru Watanabe and sound practitioner and artist GENG PTP.
Acclaimed composer and instrumentalist Kaoru Watanabe’s melodic, authentic and engaging music focuses on points of connection: the joints between Western jazz and Eastern traditional, Japanese theater and political action, the ancient and the all-too-contemporary. Born into a musical family, Watanabe began his training at a young age, eventually graduating from the Manhattan School of Music, then devoting a decade overseas performing with and ultimately leading the world-renowned Taiko drum performance group KODO. His ten years in Japan profoundly influenced Watanabe's practice, and his signature skill of infusing Japanese culture with disparate styles has made him a much in-demand collaborator. Watanabe’s impressive list of creative works across different media reflects his ever-curious ear and wandering eye. He advised and contributed to film director Wes Anderson’s Oscar-nominated score for Isle of Dogs; tours regularly with Yo-Yo Ma’s Silkroad; has supported numerous dance companies and movement artists, including Mikhail Baryshnikov; and has composed with and performed alongside Laurie Anderson, Jason Moran, Alicia Hall Moran, Vernon Reid, Bando Tamasaburo, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Zakir Hussain, among many others. As a composer, Watanabe writes for various, often unconventional instrumentation, utilizing a wide variety of compositional and performance techniques. Watanabe's newest creation, INCENSE, uses live-recorded sample loops of flute, drums, and vocals, providing him the technical means to perform ensemble compositions as a solo artist.
GENG PTP is a Manhattan-born, Queens NYC-based sound practitioner (producer, poet/vocalist, sound engineer, DJ), educator, archivist, writer, visual designer, organizer, and physical trainer. With 3+ decades of participatory roots in NYC's underground music/DIY communities, he has been making work through a multitude of solo and collaborative processes. Most currently, he performs as King Vision Ultra (est. 2017), a channeling project considering memory and voice as quantum weaponry in relation to honoring/making/taking space, remembrance (the archive), and protecting the spirit.
In January 2023, he released his fourth album as KVU, SHOOK WORLD, featuring 16 collaborators + Algiers (Atlanta, GA). Recent collaborations: Nile Harris (TESTIFY, 2023), Jeremy Toussant-Baptiste (...and Drive (Far Away), 2022), Jonathan González (Practice, 2022, Lucifer Landing II, 2019), and Matana Roberts (Sandy Speaks...II, 2022, Sandy Speaks..., 2019, Blood.Blue(s), 2018).
The concert is produced by the three creators Tatiana Pandiani (director/book-writer/lyricist), Melis Aker (book-writer/lyricist), and Jacinta Clusellas (composer/lyricist), alongside creative producers Anabel Manuela Romero (FURIOSA Productions) and Ryan Duncan-Ayala. During this special one night only event, Clusellas will also be performing with the band that will feature Federico Diaz, Pablo Lanouguere and Franco Pinna. Arrangements and orchestrations are by Jacinta Clusellas, Kurt Crowley (Hamilton, Freestyle Love Supreme, Bring It On), and Tony® and Grammy Award® winner Alex Lacamoire (Hamilton, In The Heights, Dear Evan Hansen). Music Direction by Obie Award winner Ben Moss (Oratorio for Living Things).

A joyful, sensorial, combustible mix of rock and roll bravado, vintage pop diva and comedic antics, Rizo has won a cult following worldwide. Come join the fun for an evening of radical optimism as she holds the beauty and sorrow of life in her tiny hands.
The New York Times once referred to Rizo as “SENSATIONAL… A fierce but kindhearted fusion of comedy, burlesque, performance art and rock ‘n’ roll.” Taking a cue from Piaf, Rizo (né Amelia Zirin-Brown) fully embraces the role of chanteuse. In recordings, she is a mysterious figure, a siren ushering you through tableaus of heartbreak, lust, and the murkiness in between. Live, she is an eyeful.
An international cult favorite, her stage shows bring her powerhouse vocals together with seductive storytelling and wild hilarious audience experiments. Rizo is a provocateur with an electric wit, and has been called a “diva par excellence” by The Guardian. In the studio she has collaborated with Moby, Reggie Watts, and Yo-Yo Ma; whose album Songs of Joy & Peace, which features Rizo, won a Grammy Award.
Rizo has also received a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, a Time Out London theater award, and a London Cabaret Award. Currently starring in the role of Madame Zinzanni in the revival of the much beloved Teatro ZinZanni and is in development for a television project with Michael Carbonaro of the popular series “The Carbonaro Effect.”
D’yan has always been ahead of her time. In 1963 she moved to Paris as a young, innocent, recently divorced Bostonian looking to make it big in the Parisian cabaret scene. Immersing herself in the glitz, glamour, and scandalous nightlife of the era, the naive D’yan was transported from a sheltered suburban existence to a life filled with underground sex clubs and the swinger’s scene. A coming-of-age story like you have never seen it. Critics have called her everything from "saucy," "witty," "irrepressible," and a "naughty version of Betty White."
D’yan recently performed on "The Drew Barrymore Show", and has been featured in The New York Times, Time Out NY, New York Post, and "France’s Got Talent".
Swinging on the Seine was written by D’yan Forest, Eric Kornfeld, and Stephen Clarke (bestselling author of A Year in the Merde). D’yan Forest has performed all over the world with notable performances in New York, Paris, Edinburgh and even Ethiopia. If there’s a stage, chances are she’s been on it.

Corgi mahm and almost contestant on The Great American Bake Show - it’s fine, it’s fine, she’s totally fine, everything is…fine - Ally Bonino makes her Joe’s Pub solo debut with Flight. Ally has spent most of her career on the ground level of new and emerging works and can be heard on many demos floating around the city. Truly. Throw a stick on a pile of demos, she’s probably on it. In the spring of ‘22, Ally made her Public Theater debut just across the lobby as Lucy Burns in the world premier of Suffs. Other favorite credits include Dogfight, Myths & Hymns, and Merrily We Roll Along (not that one, everyone calm down). Let’s have some fun :))

LADAMA has performed at NPR Tiny Desk, TED, the Skoll World Forum, on ESPN, and at dozens of prestigious venues and festivals around the world. In a feature on their music, NPR's "All Things Considered" praised LADAMA's "irresistible spirit and universal appeal."
Built on Bones is a collection of six original songs for the Witches of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The recordings feature Emily Scott Robinson (writer/composer), Alisa Amador (NPR Tiny Desk Contest Winner 2022) and Lizzy Ross (of duo Violet Bell) as the three witches singing through the tragedy of Macbeth in three-part harmony.
---
Colorado songwriter Emily Scott Robinson beckons to those who are lost, lonely, or learning the hard way with American Siren, her first album for Oh Boy Records. With hints of bluegrass, country, and folk, the eloquent collection shares her gift for storytelling through her pristine soprano and the perspective of her unconventional path into music. American Siren landed her on multiple 2021 “best-of” lists - including NPR, Rolling Stone, Sterogum, and more. Robinson’s follow up, Built on Bones (October 2022 via Oh Boy Records), is a collection of six original songs for the Witches of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
“Americana duo Violet Bell‘s new album, Shapeshifter – out October 7 – tells a story of the mythological selkie, a mermaid-like creature from Celtic folklore that embodies a form that’s half woman, half seal. In their retelling and reshaping of this ancient folk narrative, they tease out its connections to the transatlantic journey of American roots music, to the cultural and social melting pot of the “New World,” and to agency, intention, and self-possession.
A concept album of sorts, the music is remarkably approachable and down-to-earth, while the stories and threads of the record tell equally ordinary and cosmic tales. At such a time in American history, with fascism once again on the rise and attacks on bodily autonomy and personal agency occurring with greater frequency at every level of governance, Shapeshifter offers a seemingly timeless lens through which to engage with, understand, and challenge the overarching social and political turmoil we all face on the daily. Moreover, it’s an excellent folk record, demonstrating Violet Bell’s connections to North Carolina, Appalachia, and the greater communities that birthed so many of the genre aesthetics evident in the album’s songs.
Shapeshifter is a gorgeous exercise in community building, an artful subversion of societal norms, and a stunning folktale packaged in accessible, resonant music with a local heartbeat and a global appeal.” -Justin Hiltner, The Bluegrass Situation
The winner of the 2022 NPR Tiny Desk Contest, Alisa Amador’s music is a synthesis of the many styles she’s voraciously absorbed: rock, jazz, funk and alternative folk, all wrapped in the spirit of the Latin music she grew up with. NPR's Cyrena Touros calls her “a pitch-perfect rendition of my wildest dreams,” and NPR's Bob Boilen calls Alisa "a powerful voice whose tender performance commands attention and fosters connection." Alisa has opened for such artists as Lake Street Dive, Madison Cunningham, Watchhouse, and countless others. Alisa's soulful singing, poetically incisive lyrics, and syncopated rhythms are likely to make you cry, laugh, and dance all within one set. Alisa released her debut EP, Narratives, in 2021.

Founded in 1994, DreamYard set out to transform the educational and career readiness systems and mindsets that have historically excluded low-income populations of color. 22 years ago DY chose to work exclusively in The Bronx because of community needs and the belief that DY could deliver the greatest impact if it focused its work on one community. Over time, DY has invested deeply in the borough, developing a learning pathway for young people in K-12th grade.
