Ready to shake up your art routine? In this Mixed Media Collage Paper Tutorial, I’m taking you inside my studio for an experimental exercise that’s all about breaking free from the usual and thinking BIG—literally.
Instead of working small in my journal or on standard 8.5”x11” sheets, I’m going large with plain deli paper and loads of mixed media layers. You’ll see how the physical act of painting on a huge scale helps shift your perspective—and maybe even fall in love with your painted paper in the process.

Transparent papers have a kind of magic to them—and today, I’m showing you exactly how I use them in one of my favorite exercises: grid collage. In this video, I’m working with a mix of translucent and transparent painted papers (including medical exam paper, wet strength tissue, and even coffee-stained scraps!) to build a deeply personal 6-part collage series inside my sketchbook.
You’ll see how I use different types of collage paper to create mood, memory, and movement—with layers that both reveal and conceal. I’m also sharing some personal stories along the way, from my grandmother’s handwritten recipes to my fishing heritage, and how these themes wove their way into the final piece.

This week’s video was totally unplanned—but I'm so happy I went with my instinct. The sunshine pulled me out of the winter woes and into the studio. I found myself diving into a spontaneous, breezy session of easy painted tissue paper making. Using lots of water, vibrant acrylics, and translucent papers like wet strength tissue and medical exam paper, I created dreamy, delicate textures perfect for collage.

Can you actually make the perfect gel print? In this video, I take on the challenge—layer by layer—using my giant 16x20 gel plate, translucent papers, favorite stencils, and some very beautiful acrylic paints. The results? Let’s just say there were surprises. From unexpected textures to intense reveals, this session is all about trusting the process and seeing what shows up. #gelprinting #perfectgelprint #mixedmediaart

Today, I’m in the studio making small mixed-media art cards—and honestly? I’m having so much fun!

I’ll show you my simple (but game-changing!) taping technique, walk you through every luscious layer, and share my go-to supplies—including thai gossamer paper, medical exam paper (yep, really!), and a few favorite tools.
This project is all about playing with color, embracing unexpected textures, and remembering that small-scale art can still have a big impact.
NOTE: I forgot to say this in the video - another way to make sure paint doesn't bleed beneath the tape is to "seal" all the tape edges with a coat or two of matte medium.

In this video, I am putting the final touches on the two oysters I have been working on in this Sketchbook Art Series.
It’s amazing how tiny little marks here and there, some shading with graphite, a a little paint can completely elevate a “finished” painting or collage.
I’m sharing how I chose to finish these two pieces, and my thought process as I go.
If you are unsure how to do the final touches on your own works, this video will be helpful.

In this week’s video, I’m creating a nostalgic collage in my art journal that holds a very special place in my heart. Inspired by my grandmother’s handwriting and memories from my family’s time in Gloucester, I weave personal stories into this art process, making this one of my most cherished pages. I use a variety of mixed media techniques, including collaging with transparent medical exam paper and aging the journal entry with distress inks. If you love experimenting with personal and nostalgic elements in your art, you’re going to love this process!
