I absolutely love this bonus track. The climax near the end of the tune is a fantastic showcase of the difference between programmed and live drumming. So much of the power and emotion of that moment comes from the arrival of that big, room-y drum sound. RAM makes use of such beautiful airy drums. There's this modern trend for drums to be as crunchy and compressed as possible to more emulate a drum machine (which is a sound I love), but something about the clear sound of the drums on this record makes songs like this infinitely more impactful. The snare drum feels real. You can actually hear the head of the bass drum. This tune makes that difference so much more obvious when the programmed drums fade into JR playing that same groove. With this mashup, I wanted to emphasize that moment even more by adding the stellar orchestral and choir arrangement that was recently released with the 10th-anniversary edition of the album. I'm proud of how it turned out.Earworm (Vulfpeck Cover & Animation)Drake Martin2022-12-19 | Edited by Drake Martin Animation by Sara DavisThe Joe Dart II: A Complete PackageDrake Martin2022-11-04 | A Review of the third bass in the Joe Dart series, the Joe Dart II.

*transcription is of what I am playing, NOT the original bass lineHow Breaking Bads Plot Parallels El Paso by Marty RobbinsDrake Martin2020-07-30 | A fun story about the making of this edit:
I made this video nearly all in one night. I first matched each lyric from the song with what shots from the show I'd put it with. In Breaking Bad, "El Paso" is playing in the truck that Walter steals to make his way back to ABQ. In fact, there's a shot where he throws the cassette of the album onto the passenger seat while searching the glove compartment for the key (which I made sure to include in this edit). Whenever I got to the line at 2:35 I realized that the portion of the song that plays when he turns the car on happened to be the exact line I unknowingly matched with that scene. It was very late at night and I was freaking out in my room realizing that I was spot on with my analysis. Good times.

an incredibly solid groove. I'm really loving this album, just haven't been particularly inspired to transcribe any of the bass lines. might do the birdwatcher.
disclaimer: there are slight discrepancies between what I play and what is shown on screen. I recorded this pretty late at night so there are some minor things that I didn't nail. all the important stuff is exact, tho.

This is definetly my favorite single yet. I'm using 2 separate instances of Vulf Compressor on this one. One set to mostly just compress, which I put on nearly all of my covers, and one for distortion. I think I got relatively close to Joe's tone. Not quite the same on the high mids, but we're getting there.
I've learned from my private instructor, Mike Pope, that feeling certain grooves in a half note pulse instead of a quarter note can really improve the groove. Glamour Profession is a great example. For the A sections of this song, I'm mostly feeling it in a half note. You can see me physically change to a quarter note subdivision in the B sections.
Joe fills a little bit more than I would have liked on this tune. There are two too many fills in the second A section IF YA ASK ME. I filled over one of them (1:30) that I didn't particularly like.
Awesome tune, very excited for the album when it releases in 18 months :\

#bass #funk #vulfpeckLevitating (Bass Cover) / Dua LipaDrake Martin2020-05-07 | FUTURE NOSTALGIA is the first pop album that I've gotten into since Random Access Memories in 2013. I'm not sure who's idea it was to get all of these funky bass lines on a pop record, but I'm very grateful.
This one is deceptively simple. It's mostly made up of octaves over just 3 chords, but the usage of ghost notes is what really funkifies this one. In the verses (0:09) I was really trying to keep the ghost notes quieter than I normally would to get that more processed pop sound. I don't think I did a particularly great job on that and I will definetly continue to explore. The lack of rhythmic density in the pre-choruses (0:28) really make the choruses (0:37) pop on this one.
A big reason I love this bass line is the subtle change around halfway into the tune (1:47). It's pretty obvious in this cover, but I really didn't notice it until I had gotten around 10 listens in.
Also, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DRAKE MARTIN HISTORY, I used a pedal in a cover (2:23)! Crazy stuff! The good ole' synth bass emulation by using an octave pedal and playing an octave up. VERY COOL!
Very proud of this fill towards the end. The first half is definetly better than the second. (3:09)
As I've heard D Mo say to many soon to be Berklee graduates:
"Your real studying is about to begin"
Definetly feeling that apply to this summer.

probably my favorite tune off the new record. such a solid and foundational bass line.
*things to note*
joe cuts off most of the notes on the back-beats he sort of slides into a lot of the notes (3:16) lots of muting (switching between left and right hand)
sorry if there are some inaccuracies. i didn't nitpick the note length. also, my ear for harmony isn't great BUT IM WORKING ON IT

Brian May's solo at the end is so good. This is also got to be one of my favorite mixes of all time. Reinhold Mack is the GOAT. There's a reason why The Game, Hot Space, The Works, and A Kind Of Magic have the best production. (it was that guy).
I have been a huuuuuge fan of Queen since I was like 12. It's crazy to think how much it's tied into the creation of the next band I obsessed over, Vulfpeck. In case you didn't know, Vulfpeck was created by Jack Stratton with the goal of becoming the German equivalent of the great house rhythm sections from the 70s. He wanted to get the attention of REINHOLD to make it a reality. Crazy how that worked out.

Well, here we are. Nearly a year after my first album cover and my process for making videos is mostly the same. I upgraded from Windows Movie Maker to Adobe Premiere Pro (and you can definitely tell the difference) and am getting slightly better at mixing these videos. This bass does almost all of the work itself. I just put some Vulf Compressor on it and a little bit of EQ, then its good to go. It has an insane sound when recorded DI.
