HI hope yall enjoy my cover of one of the grooviest bass lines to ever grace the earth!
This is me playing homage to the song I've been listening on repeat for the past few months. Although I'd love to be able to groove like joe dart, I'm not quite there - you'll just have to put up with my groove-in-progress for now :)
Also this my debut bass cover on my new flea signature jazz bass! I got lucky - thanks fender!!

It's been a hectic and crazy few months of completing my masters degree but I am finally free to practice and record something on the bass. First time I heard this song I was struck by the old school funk vibes, especially from the bass line - I knew I had to cover it eventually!
....see if you guys can identify the bass line in the bridge I slid in as a homage to another funk classic!
Thanks for sticking around, hope you guys enjoy my take on this seriously uplifting song. Everyone needs some Lizzo in their life to cheer them on!Laufey - Best Friend (all bass cover)deppwaswho2022-03-27 | Hi everyone!
Recently I've been really enjoying the beautifully melodic/jazzy/soothing tunes from Laufey - I only stumbled on her music a month ago, and her voice feels like a warm blanket on a cold day (if you haven't heard of her, please check her out, she's a special one). This is my take on one of my favourite songs of hers - here's to all the best friends in the world :)
Lyrics: It's come to my attention That I don't show enough Of what I think It's only when I drink, I open up But I promise that I love you Even with that hairdo I'm sorry I made fun of it It's not your fault it looks like shit (like shit)
I have never tolerated someone for so long I've never laughed so much I haven't written a sad song There's no one else I'd rather fall asleep with And dream with You're my best friend in the world
When we're ninety-eight and ninety-nine (ninety-nine) Tumbling down the stairs You'll barely catch me in time (tumbling down) We'll argue about what to watch on TV Finally pick a movie, then we'll fall asleep (asleep) We'll still be a little bit strange Some things never change
It's funny 'cause you drive me half insane A universe without you would be thoroughly mundane There's no one else I'd rather fall in love with And that is my best friend in the world You're my best friend in the worldItll be okay - Shawn Mendes (Cover)deppwaswho2022-02-27 | Just a reminder to myself and everyone in the world, it will be okay.
My thoughts go out to all those who are suffering through a loss, war, disease....2022 sucks.
I'm not a singer by any means, so do excuse the shaky voice. Disclaimer, I prerecorded everything because there is no way I could've sung this live and played bass cleanly at the same time!
Take care, stay safe everyone.
Also, Shawn hit me up, we can talk it out, I'm here if you need an ear - we can be breakup buds (just don't copyright me pls)How to Teach Yourself to SLAP Bass in 5 Stepsdeppwaswho2022-02-01 | Hi everyone! It's been a really long time since my last upload!
One of the most challenging things on any instrument is picking up completely new techniques - I know I struggled for along time learning how to slap and pop on the bass. Slapping may seem intimidating at first but if we break down the steps, any one can do it!
As you may or may not know, I went through a 'self-taught' journey on the bass guitar and had to pick up new techniques by myself. I hope this video can shed some light on how I went about learning how to slap and pop, and hopefully it can help anyone who wants to start SLAPPING DA BASS but isn't sure how to start!

Audio Interface, microphone and headphones from Focusrite (Scarlett 2i2 studio)Polyphia - Crush (Bass Cover)deppwaswho2021-10-11 | Hey everyone!
Something a little different this time! Polyphia makes insane music and for once in my life I kinda wish I knew how to play guitar so I could shred along. So...as the song went on I slowly transitioned from a bassist to a pseudo-'guitarist'! To close it off, I attempted the first solo but there was no way I was gonna be able to nail the second, so I reverted back to a bassist by the end of the song :) Not gonna lie, I struggled to play the guitar riffs accurately and in time, please do excuse the mistakes!
Also, thank you very much for getting me to 100k+ subs, my next video is likely to be a QnA to celebrate and introduce myself to any new subs, so please leave anything you wanna ask me in the comments section!

An RHCP medley has something I've wanted to do for a long time (many years in fact) but never had the time to do so. Summer has rolled around and finally I got the chance to compile my favourite/top 40 Flea bass lines. It took a looong time to put together (that peg turn to drop D tuning took forever to get right) but here is the finished product!
The video angles (and audio takes) were recorded separately so there are some continuity glitches (I only have one camera!) but other than that I hope you enjoy!

Audio Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 2i2Joe Dart - Bass Solo (Cover) in One of These Nights LIVE with Theo Katzmandeppwaswho2021-06-15 | Hi all!
'JOE! JOE! JOE! JOE!...Joe Dart on the Joe Dart!'
This is my cover of Joe Dart's incredible solo on Theo Katzman's cover of 'One of these nights' . Joe has this amazing ability to make his solos catchy and melodic but at the same time still quite rhythmic and bassy with funky riffs interspersed with more lyrical licks and flashy fast fills.
I removed the bass frequencies of the original so most of what you're hearing should be mainly me. My cover is a result of many takes spliced because I don't have the god fingers of Mr. Dart - hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed learning it!
Audio Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 2i2Vulfpeck /// My First Car - Live at Madison Square Garden (Bass Cover)deppwaswho2021-04-11 | Happy easter everyone!
This is probably the most difficult song I've covered in my opinion - Joe has so many little percussive trinkets in his bass line that I found it impossible to nail everything! Still, it's not as clean as I'd like it, and I rushed through several parts, but I hope you'll enjoy it! (Also this live version has way more oomph than their studio version, so I went with it instead)

As I've mentioned, I'm taking a break from full on bass playing so the nerves in my hand can heal. That is also another reason why I want to focus on some music theory this year instead :)
Also disclaimer, I'm not a bass pro by any means -that would be Charles Bethoud, duh! So if you're looking for more in depth or a PROs perspective, do check out his video on 'How to master any instrument'!

Audio Interface, microphone and headphones from Focusrite (Scarlett 2i2 studio)The BEST way to record BASS covers for YouTube (in my opinion)deppwaswho2020-12-25 | Hello and Merry Christmas!
Today I have another one of them talky-type videos to share with you all :)
If you’ve been around for a while (like I mean a REALLY long time), then you may remember the ‘how to record bass covers’ video I made many years back. This is sort of an updated version! I thought it’d be interesting to share with you guys how I now record my bass covers and compare it with how I used to.
Thanks to the folks and Focusrite for helping make this video a reality. I have been using the Scarlett 2i4 for ages and ages, no joke! Also thanks to MonkCustom Enterprise in Taiwan for their continued kind support.

Another head-bop inducing song by Vulfpeck. Don't you love it when the song title literally tells you how to play the main bass riff off the song :D Joe nailed it with the tightness and articulation of the bass line, I couldn't quite get it right but I tried la (my detached/staccato notes could be better)! Enjoy :)FLEA Signature Jazz Bass VS. ERNIE BALL MusicMan Bass + Pedal REVIEWdeppwaswho2020-08-17 | Hi all!
A little bit of a different video today - wanted to explore the sounds of the two basses that I play regularly and review a few pedals that were kindly sent to me by Monk Custom (monkcustom.com/). I have literally NEVER used pedals before so this is a new first for me....so don't hold back if you you have suggestions for me and/or want to tell me I'm doing it all wrong!
Also let me know about your thoughts on a giveaway of one of these pedals, may sneak one in if I ever hit 100k subs as a gesture of appreciation for your support and a thank you to you all!
A bit more detail regarding my thoughts on the basses and pedals:
Sterling by Music Man Ray 34 - this bass comes with a bite. You can hear it in all of the clips in this video i.e. the signature Ernie Ball sound. The default action of the strings is very low, and even after adjustment (made it slightly higher) sometimes there's still a little of that fret buzz going on but at the same time...it makes this bass a dream to play. It's by far my favourite bass to slap and pop on. I'd say it's got a great mid frequency sound quality to it and is good for general funky songs/covers but may not work as favourably when recording mellow stuff.
Fender Flea Signature Active Jazz Bass - my favourite bass to play live becomes it has a sound that just BOOMS across the floor. It's got a really bassy sound but maintains punchiness with a good mix of treble. I love the sound quality and its perfect for when I want to play super tight groovy vulfpecky kind of stuff imo. Only down side is it's harder to slap and pop on compared to my sterling and the action is slightly higher - but it's because of this that every note seems to stand on its own and its great for fast punchy riffs.
Melvin Lee Davis Bass Preamp and DI - the pedal gave me a chance to finally kind of understand/play around with EQ settings instead of taking the default settings of garage band. I can see how it can be useful in situations where you're playing different types of songs during the same gig and want a different sound quality to your bass!
Komp Core Deluxe compressor - easy to use, and it does the job as a compressor! Useful I can imagine if I'm playing a song mixed with slap/pop and finger style.
Masamune booster and kompressor pedal - more versatile than the above compressor because of the boost, which is...good for...bass solos? (LOL). But regardless, it's nice to have options when live!Cory Wong - Thats my passport photo (Bass Cover)deppwaswho2020-07-01 | Hello all!
My last video got a lot of traction (i guess thanks youtube algorithm?) so welcome new subscribers! Stay tuned for the next few videos because I'll be reviewing some groovy gear and possiblyyyy will do a GIVEAWAY!!!!
This is a funky short song from Cory Wong and Martin Allison who wrote the bass line. I've been meaning to practice my double thumbing for so long but found it difficult to find songs that incorporated it on a beginner to intermediate level. This one fit the bill pretty nicely! It's still a work in progress, but I hope you enjoy!
Also at the middle break down bit, Martin uses a special reverse-wah sort of effect on the the bass which i couldn't find on my recording program nor did I have any pedals, so I just boosted the bass and reverb (LOL)....Dua Lipa - Levitating (Bass Cover)deppwaswho2020-05-27 | Hello all!
Dua Lipa's new album has inspired so many awesome bass covers on youtube (lets be real, we're all thinking about juliaplaysgroove) so I though I'd give it a go try to put my spin on one of her songs.
This is a bit more filly/flashy than I would normally play but it was fun for a change! Hope you enjoy :)Major Lazer - Lay Your Head On Me (Bass Cover)deppwaswho2020-04-22 | Hi all!
So this isn't normally a song I would cover but Major Lazer's marketing team reached out to me (and hundreds of others too) to put together a video, asking if I could do my version of their song on bass. So here's the full version of of my cover, as only a snippet made it in the MV (I make an appearance around 2:48 from the end but blink - you'll miss me haha!)
Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy :)
also...the Hong Kong sign is randomly on my keep calm and don't blink poster because they asked to do something representative of where I lived haha

More like Disco YAAAAS. Hope you enjoy this live cover of this super funky song. This was filmed and performed in May 2019 Hong Kong for an album launch/gig event for Ryan Cheung (singer-songwriter). The bass wasn't hooked up to direct input so the mix might not be ideal but I've tried to boost up the bass already la!

(quick disclaimer - I did indeed re-record some of my BIG mistakes, eek! sorry if it is ever misleading)
I adore Tom Misch's work and if you haven't listened to it, please do! He is so young but so passionate and so creative. He is the most down to earth and the loveliest fella ever (my friends and I actually met him over dinner, and I still can't even...it was surreal).
I listened to the song and started jamming/creating my own bass line to it before I had properly figured out the existing one, and it was great fun just jamming along to the tune and playing along his solos!
And lastly, during a time of monstrous anxieties topped with a dusting of xenophobia, hope y'all stay safe, stay healthy and stay funkyVulfpeck // Darwin Derby (Bass Cover)deppwaswho2020-01-18 | Happy 2020 everyone! To start the new year here's a very derpy song with an extremely groovy bass line. Who knows what this song means. Let me know the comments if you guys have any thoughts?
The best bit of the song is the monologue/rap in the middle:
"Of all the creatures in the sea, my favourite is the BASS" - Vulfpeck 2018TRAVEL Bass by Journey Instruments review!deppwaswho2019-12-02 | Hi all!
Recently Journey Instruments sent me this travel bass (I chose purple but they have other colours!) and asked me to try it out! If you guys are interested in getting it for the holidays or as christmas presents the link is somewhere below. Apologies for the inconsistent audio and glitchy-ness of the video...I don't know where that came from all of a sudden :O
All in all, it's such a cool concept and I love how portable it is, and I now I can say I can own an acoustic bass! I probably wouldn't play it in a show but at the same time I don't think that's the purpose of it - All basses have their pros and cons (I talk a little about them in the video) and this bass fits the travel bass niche really well. Also, their customer (?) service is really good - a peg broke on the way to my place and not only did they have a spare on inside the bag but they offered to send another one over too!
All my opinions are my own, though they did send this bass over for free.
So Bite Custom Bass Guitars gifted me this bass guitar which, if you can't tell by the name of their brand, was custom made and so I thought I'd give it a whirl on this awwwwesome RHCP song - that outro doe!!! flea and josh absolutely killed it. My friend told me when she runs to this song she feels like she can run faster!
Excuse the i-just-got-outta-bed look (tis the truth) and hope you enjoy :)
Gifted by: https://bite.guitars/Cory Wong ft. Tom Misch - Cosmic Sansdeppwaswho2019-10-14 | Cory Wong is a beaaaaaaaaast!
In case you didn't know, he played the guitar AND bass on this song! Coupled with Tom Misch's catchy riffs and Nate Smith's beats and you've got a song that grooooves.
It was hard to match the tightness of the playing so here and there i'm rushing and/or dragging but hop you guys enjoy none the less :)

Fleabassriffcontest original post: instagram.com/p/BtPNjrvhHWlHave yourself a Merry Little Christmas... (Bass Arrangement)deppwaswho2018-12-31 | Legend has it that the original lyrics for the Christmas classic 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' were really depressing and bleak...(lyrics below!) The writers of Meet Me at St Louis and Judy Garland agreed to alter lyrics to make it more christmassy and and uplifting, resulting in the version we know today!
Inspired by the original lyrics and a version of this song that Doddleoddle did in a minor key...I recreated a bass arrangement to suit the feel of what the song could have been.
Enjoy! (sorry about the potato cam)

LYRICS:
Have yourself a merry little Christmas It may be your last Next year we may all be living in the past
No good times like the olden days Happy golden days of yore Faithful friends who were dear to us Will be near to us no more
But at least we all will be together If the Lord allows From now on, we'll have to muddle through somehow So have yourself a merry little Christmas now

It might only be one main bass riff but it's got enough groove for even thrash metal heads to slow down and bob along.
I play a bit sloppily and off time (are you rushing or dragging?! #moviereference) and its hard to match exactly joes timing, so please excuse the mistakes. Also disclaimer - I play it differently to how joe does it (can compare with the video!)

This is a little insight into the recording process and the behind the scenes that goes into creating an album! Although saying ‘I’m going to LA to record an album’ sounds super glamorous, it’s actually a lot of listening attentively and sitting around hammering take after take.
Our producer Mr. Bob Marlette is an incredible human being and I could not have asked for a better studio experience.
Hope you find this ‘behind the scenes’ is interesting! See you all in the next video, next year!

(Still trying to work out how to 'mix' my bass into the original track, so it might sound a bit too bassy at times eek!)Amy Winehouse - Valerie (Cover)deppwaswho2017-01-07 | Happy new year! This was filmed during that transition between Christmas and new years so the christmas tree is featured in our video :) hopefully the choppy editing, outfit changes and lighting inconsistency won't take away from the arrangement! Enjoy :)
thanks izza for being the voice i turn to when my bass arrangements are sounding a bit bland and voice-less!RHCP - Sick Love (Bass Cover)deppwaswho2016-11-30 | Quick cover up just in time before it gets too cold to play bass without warming up my hands first!
One of my favourite songs on the latest album from RHCP, added in some super random fills (ones that even I was weirded out by) but I hope its still listenable :)
Also I'm convinced my camera records things at a different speed to real time - that may be why nearer to the end the audio and video go slightly out of syncMy Favourite Bass Channels!deppwaswho2016-10-26 | If you think I've missed out on any other great bass channels comment and let me know! I need to expand my youtube subscriptions and explore new music!
this video took FOREVER to edit! I started off with a crazy 29minutes of unedited footage and managed to cut down my blabbering into this 7 minute video! quite proud of myself for that but thank gosh this week i have no school because I don't know where I'd find the time to do this!
I hope you enjoy my summary on some of my most often visited bass channels - for those watching on a phone, i gotchu! the links will be down below:
MUSIC: Jamiroquai - Hot Tequila Brown Jafunk - This ThingValentine - Kina Grannis (Cover)deppwaswho2016-09-16 | about 6 months late to valentines day...but 6 months to go to the next one! adorable song by the lovely Kina Grannis, not a very bass oriented cover but a super fun one nonetheless
fei chang gan xie eyesbelle for her lovely vocals and being weird and smelly on camera with me :)Michael League Bass Solo - Coverdeppwaswho2016-08-01 | This Michael League bass solo was uploaded by BassTheWorld.com on youtube ages ago and I though whoaaaaaa its a Michael League bass solo that i might actually be able to play! Mind you my timing is off at parts, it was much harder than i thought to keep time
They took it down afterwards but not before i had already learnt the solo ;) Credit all goes to BassTheWorld.com and Michael League, I hope neither of them mind that I've covered it and put it on my channel.
It's nothing compared to the original and a little rough around the edges. I had a hard time trying to control the dynamics of the bass; always something i can improve on for next time :)
(video and audio recorded separately - potato webcam refuses to film the video if i record my bass via garageband simultaneously)RHCP - Dark Necessities (Bass Cover)deppwaswho2016-07-03 | Long time no see! First single off of RHCPs new album The Getaway and I really really really like the bass! It has a Can't Stop feel to it - some parts may be out of sync because my camera was being weird and the audio is meh as well, I still don't know how to mix well nor am I able to tell when my bass is a bit out of tune until its too late ahhhh. SORRY!
Was thinking of making tabs or doing a video lesson on this song - let me know if you guys would like to see one!
Sorry for lack of videos, it is getting harder and harder to find the time and motivation to still make covers :(BASS BATTLE Davie504 x Deppwaswhodeppwaswho2016-05-16 | For the Sire Contest :)
(Firstly I want to apologize for the terrible audio and visuals! Had some troubles trying to edit and record this! Excuse the potato cam quality, its probably best to watch it in 720p! Oh and yes this is the same tune Davie used for his collab with Miki, but he created a contest/jam sesh opportunity with it afterwards)
Just a simple search of 'Davie504 sire' on youtube will bring you a myriad of brilliant collab videos all entered into this same contest. I feel like this opportunity has brought together so many musicians that may or may not be well known on youtube, and allowed for the diversity of talents to flourish! It's crazy to think one tune can spawn so many different versions from different musicians, and I think I've listened to probably all the entires! For anyone who plays an instrument and has yet to give this a go I highly recommend it!
I had a really really good time jamming with you Davie :) It took me a million and one takes to get this right and lemme tell you I probably will never be able to play it smoothly but it was a super fun challenge trying to keep up!The 1975 - Settle Down (Bass Cover)deppwaswho2016-03-28 | Aloha! This band is getting really popular lately! I tried something new for the verse, giving a go at the double thumb technique but i don't think i've quite got it down right. In time hopefully :) Hope everyone's having a great easter so far :]
Dedicated to the smelly sloth that suggested this songEsperanza Spalding - Precious (Bass Cover)deppwaswho2016-02-10 | Please listen with earphones!
This cover has a fair amount of mistakes! Timing mistakes, wrong notes, wrong dynamics, you name it. Sorry I didn't take the time to make it better - the main riff I found to be quite tricky to play and I can't begin to imagine how much more difficult it is on the double bass which is what Esperanza plays it on.
I love the message of the song and the melodies so I thought I'd cover it :)
