A few MFC elements can light a LED for a very long time (8 month tested so far). The nanoporous electrodes here show much better power performance than graphite felt electrodes used in some MFC constructions. These MFC cathodes can be obtained from superaccu.comHow the electricity is generated?Maximum voltage is up to 930 mV, maximum short-circuit current density is 13 mA. There are two nanoporous carbon electrodes: one is placed at the bottom (anode), the other is placed at the top (cathode). Oxygen can access to the cathode, whereas there is anaerobic (oxygen free) medium around anode, where bacteria work hard. Several bacteria may contribute, for example Escherichia coli can release some compounds through its outer cell membrane, which oxidize at anode. Shewanella putrefaciens and Geobacter may attach onto the carbon and directly give away electrons. Some tricks with gallium and Galinstan are shown in the video.1) Gallium melts in hot sulpuric acid. It can be collected with a micropipette and small droplets join in a very funny way. 2) Potassium dichromate crystals are added, which makes gallium wobbling due to the formation of insoluble salts on the metal surface. The change of interfacial tension makes gallium change its shape. 3) In the second experiment, hydrogen peroxide is added instead of dichromate and the gallium droplet is touched with an iron wire. Now gallium makes itself as flat as possible and white layer (oxide?, sulphate?) forms at the metal surface. When gallium is heated shortly with a torch, it forms a single droplet and then again makes itself flat. Gas bubbles (probably oxygen) start bubbling through the metal and it becomes a flat white flower.4) Then we prepared galinstan by heating together solid metals gallium (68%), tin (22%) and indium (10%). While gallium melts at 29.8 °C, Galinstan is even liquid at −19 °C. It can be spread onto a glass to make a mirror. Gallium and galinstan form an alloy with aluminum and this alloy reacts with water releasing hydrogen. Slow motion reveals that initially there is blue flame which takes quickly yellow color. Secondly, acetylene-C2H2 (prepared by adding calcium carbide to water) flame is black due to unburned carbon particles. Nitrocellulose-C6H7O2(ONO2)3 burning is fast, but small pieces can be safely ignited on palm due to low density of nitrated cotton. Trimethylborate-B(OCH3)3 exploded with green flame. Rubidium-Rb and potassium-K reacted explosively with water. Then came methanol-CH3OH cannon. Aluminium-Al and lead tetroxide-Pb3O4 or simply aluminothermic mixture was ignited with a chemical time fuse. Bomb group was neutralizing solvents that may have had some unstable peroxides formed. They used plastic explosive (contains hexogen-C3H6N6O6, also known as RDX) and a detonating cord. The second explosion was picric acid-C6H3N3O7 and some plastic explosive. The last was a mixture of potassium permanganate-KMnO4 and aluminium-Al.
