18th Century Bonnet Pattern Test | The Yorktown Bonnet Costuming Drama 2023-02-13 | Hello Friends! This week, we are pattern testing the Yorktown Bonnet, a 18th - early 19th century Bonnet by Penny River Costumes and GoodWivesLinens. The pattern says it is for 1860 through 1900, but I'm pretty sure you can push it into regency a smidge! This pattern was super thorough, and really easy to put together! There are instructions for historical and modern methods of putting it together as well as easier and harder ways of construction. They give you multiple ways to decorate and pleat this hat and it's all very clear when you make it! I would say this would be very beginner hat-making friendly! I recently found myself in Los Angeles for the weekend and before I drove home, I had the pleasure of stopping by LACMA for the Lee Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse Exhibit and I thought I would take you with me. This is a quick walk through of the exhibition and covers all of the pieces in the show. I made a Liquid Gold Caftan Dress | Decades of Style TLC Caftan Costuming Drama 2022-09-06 | Hello Friends! I needed one more somewhat formal dress for my cruise for the Hollywood under the stars evening, so I made a liquid gold caftan dress! I had purchased this micro-pleated fabric in NYC Garment District when i was there last and knew it needed to be this pattern! the Decades of Style TLC caftan pattern is easy to read, understand and execute, and I love the resulting dress! I have never worked with this kind of fabric before so I had to sort of feel my way through this build, so bear with me. there are some chats in this video for those of you who enjoy that sort of thing! Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy Exhibit | Legion of Honor San Francisco 2022 Costuming Drama 2022-08-26 | Hello Friends! Today I am delighted to present to you Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy Exhibit from the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco. The exhibit is currently running through September 5, but word on the street is that it will be extended before being packed up and sent back to China. This exhibit is not traveling at this time. I was absolutely overwhelmed by this exhibit. every dress is a masterclass in creative and technical achievement. We saw this over the course of two days because myself as well as the people I was with were so mentally overloaded by what we saw that we missed about half of the exhibit entirely! I HIGHLY recommend you get yourself to this exhibit if possible. Modifying my Regency Gown for a Better Silhouette & Preparing for a Road Trip | Workroom Vlog Costuming Drama 2022-07-23 | Hello Friends! This week I am preparing for a road trip and for events shortly after I get back. I decided to finally tackle that Regency dress that Nicole helped fit for me about a year ago now. I wanted to modify it to get a better silhouette - an earlier style of dress than I had originally made. I also balled up a lot of yarn so that I can teach myself how to knit again, cut out a pirate shirt for potential sewing on the road, and cut out another Amalia Jacket from Scroop Patterns to potentially stitch also should I have the time. I made the Matinee Blouse from Decades of Style | New Vintage Wardrobe Costuming Drama 2022-07-16 | Hello Friends! Today we are expanding my vintage wardrobe by attempting the Matinee Blouse by Decades of Style. I am also choosing to sew this with really slippery fabric, which is the first time I am every trying to sew with this kind of fabric. That was a decision. Let me tell you. It almost broke me. This shirt/video took me forever to make because i needed to get my head in the game and out of my own way, but I managed to do that in the end. The pattern is great and I would highly recommend it! I would, however, recommend stabilizing your fabric if you are gonna use something that is super slippy and do not know what you are doing. Starting my Vintage Wardrobe | 1930s Butterfly Blouse Costuming Drama 2022-06-06 | Hello Friends! This week I am starting my vintage wardrobe by making a wearable mockup of the Decades of Style #3005 1930's Butterfly Blouse Pattern. As you may know, I am going on the Dandy Wellington Fascinating Voyage this fall (link down below if you should want more info), which is a vintage transatlantic cruise aboard the Queen Mary II. As I have absolutely no wardrobe that is vintage at the present, so I am going to endeavor to make what I can and buy the rest between now and October! This Butterfly blouse was made for an event by my friend Chrissy, and I fell in love with it, so I decided to try it out. If it is a good pattern (spoilers: It's great) I will probably make several tops from this pattern for the cruise and also my daily life. It's pretty important to me to be sewing/buying clothes for this trip that I will want to wear again and again in my normal wardrobe so that I am not creating a lot of waste. Finishing My 1780s White Stays | Red Threaded Front-Closing Stays Costuming Drama 2022-04-23 | Hello Friends! I started these stays in a previous video but i had a lot of hand binding to do, so this is the magical conclusion of the construction of these Red Threaded Front-Closing Stays. I loved my black ones so much, I decided to make them in white (and I will probably make at least one more pair!) so that I could get my own self dressed in my 1780's garb, which is largely light colored so far. Getting that *Perfect* Fit on My 18th Century Gown Costuming Drama 2022-02-22 | Hello Friends! This week we are finally tackling the 18th century dress repair that i have been avoiding for like nine months! Last year I went to see Abby and Nicole and they essentially tore apart my 18th century Robe Anglaise (while I was wearing it!) and put it back together with a much better fit. Unfortunately, when i got it home, I had no idea how to deal with the alterations they made and how to preserve those alterations while I unpinned everything and tried to put it back together. This week I finally decided that it was time to stop being a big chicken, that I was indeed up to the ask, and to get it done. And so I got it done, and it looks amazing. I Made Red Threaded 1780s Front Lacing Stays and They Are AWESOME Costuming Drama 2022-01-24 | Hello Friends! And Welcome to the last video in my current witchy speed-run series! In this video, I am making up the Red Threaded1780's front lacing stays, and wowzers, is this a comfortable and pretty simple pattern! I made these to go under the gothic black Chemise a la Reine and black linen petticoat that I made earlier in this series, and I cannot wait to wear them! The speed run idea in general was really great and forced me to push through pretty hard and get an entire outfit done in just a few weeks, so I will for sure be incorporating this more in the future. Starting Red Threaded 1780s Front Lacing Stays and How to Make an 18th Century Petticoat Costuming Drama 2022-01-11 | Hello Friends!Welcome to Week 3 of my Speed run! I am attempting to make a small witchy 18th century wardrobe in the span of 4 weeks, and so far, I seem to be doing alright! I have already made a black Chemise a la Reine, and in this video, I will make a black petticoat to wear under that, as well as start on some black linen stays. The pattern I am attempting is the RedThreaded 1780's Front Lacing Stays and so farm they seem to fit really well! Chemise a la Reine But Make It Goth || Witchy Speed-Run Part 1 Costuming Drama 2021-12-29 | Hello Friends!on the heels of my grunge Chemise, I have been invited to a little gathering of ladies for a witchy photo shoot in mid-January. I was always intending on making a black chemise dress anyway, so this seemed like the perfect excuse to crank out this dress while my learning is fresh! Usually, I would take my time and create this dress in my typical casual style, but since I will need the dress, a petticoat, some repairs to the undergarments of the previous dress, possibly a hat, and maybe even a new pair of stays, I thought I would attempt a speed run for this project. I plan on making weekly vlogs of whatever I can get done in that week, starting with the dress and moving down the priority list. I'm going to try and make as much as I can, as fast as I can, while still maintaining quality and my sanity. 1790’s But Make It 1990’s - Grunge Chemise a la Reine || Finishing the Gown (Part 2) Costuming Drama 2021-12-09 | Hello Friends!I was walking through a fabric store in Los Angeles with my friend, Hannah, when I spotted some gauze fabric that looked just like Flannel hoodies from the 90's - my very favorite thing ever. I had a sudden thought to myself - should I make a grunge chemise dress??? Yes, of course I should! Fabric was purchased and now here we are! In actuality, this is my practice dress before I make myself a black Robe en Chemise so I can haunt the wilderness with my friends next Halloween. orrr maybe sooner! ;-) Anyway, this is part 2 of 2 for the dress itself, I finish her up and show her off and also unbox a couple of cool goodies that got sent to me this week too! and I hope that you enjoy this video as much as I did making it!Lots has been discussed recently about this type of gown and it's origins with black women in the Caribbean. I did make sure to explore the origins of this dress before embarking on creating one of my own, and prefer to call this style of gown a "chemise dress" or "Robe en Chemise" rather than the "a la Reine", as that terminology points more toward it being created and influenced by Marie Antoinette. While the dress was certainly popularized in France and then Europe by her, it is by no means her creation, rather one part in the evolution of a dress that appears to have emerged in present-day Haiti. I did make sure to explore the origins of this dress before embarking on creating one of my own, and prefer to call this style of gown a "chemise dress" or "Robe en Chemise" rather than the "a la Reine", as that terminology points more toward it being created and influenced by Marie Antoinette. While the dress was certainly popularized in France and then Europe by her, it is by no means her creation, rather one part in the evolution of a dress that appears to have emerged in present-day Haiti.
