The Skye Trail - South to North RS Outdoors 2024-06-06 | The Skye Trail on the Isle of Skye is an 80 mile multi day hike through some of the most breathtaking scenery Scotland has to offer. Fantastic Camping Spot | Loch Dochard RS Outdoors 2024-05-22 | Early summer overnight camping trip next to 'Loch Dochard' in Scotland.This was a long time coming pre-arranged meet up with, Jim - 'Bored Man Outdoors'. Also the chance to have a couple of beers, chat about all things wild camping and YouTube at one of Scotland's most accessible yet remote locations. Terra Nova - Southern Cross 1 - Tent Re-Review. RS Outdoors 2024-05-14 | Wild camping trip into the Cairngorm mountains with the new 2024, Terra Nova, Southern Cross 1 tent.This was to try it out having been updated with ventilation modifications and the last time I tried one was over 7 years ago. The comments and opinions made in this video are my own and as such please always do your own research as what may not work for me my be ideal for others.Note that that the tent has lots of good points but feel it may be a little too cramped internally for some people. This is especially applicable if you have lots of gear in winter and as such I believe it may not be best tent suited for winter camping. Forgot to activate my alarm I had set to wake me up later that evening. Doh......Route Map: (Suggest 'Whitewell' circuit as avoids the 'Chalamain Gap').walkhighlands.co.uk/munros/braeriachTERRAIN: Warning!Rough paths to Corrour bothy (extremely rough boulder field in the Chalamain Gap) followed by a steep ascent to the plateau. The terrain on the traverse is mostly straightforward rocky tundra, though there are boulder fields on Cairn Toul. However there are huge cliffs close to much of the route, it is extremely exposed to bad weather and careful navigation is essential in poor visibility. For this reason, together with its great length and the lack of escape routes, this walk is classed as Grade 5 out of 5. Winter Wild Camping Trip | Wechsel Venture 1 Tent. RS Outdoors 2023-12-07 | .Out for an overnight winter camping trip with this 'Wechsel Venture One' tent to try it out. No wild storm, wind or rain for a change, just clear and still with amazing views of the night sky and Northern lights (Aurora Borealis).Have been wanting to revisit and camp in this area for a while and it has been 8 years since my last visit. It was also the location of one of my very first ever YouTube videos. The weather forecast was looking amazing so it would allow me to meet up again with Andrew Park and also test out this new tent in some fairly cold weather.This was a basic look and overview of the tent, but so far I like many aspects of it. However the limited storage and inner pitch first maybe a deal breaker for many. I need to try it out in some wild weather to see how it really performs.'Ben Vrackie' (787m) sits behind the town of 'Pitlochry' and has for long been an extremely popular ascent for those visiting the town. Terra Nova Laser Compact AS | Unplanned Wind Test. RS Outdoors 2023-11-23 | .Out camping with the 'Terra Nova, Laser Compact AS' tent, wild camping amongst the Scottish mountains. The weather forecast was initially looking good but changed during the night. Hilleberg Soulo Tent - Should it Stay or Go. RS Outdoors 2023-04-26 | Out with my Hilleberg Soulo tent for another wild camping trip. Not really sure if I need this tent and if I should actually keep it or not. Was not able to get parked down towards Glencoe as I had planned so switched to my Plan-B. My old camp spot was a little more exposed and windier than planned. However it did let me test out the Hilleberg Soulo's well-known stability again first hand in some rather windy weather.Also had the chance to try out the new, NeoAir® XTherm™ NXT MAX Sleeping Pad for the first time. Hilleberg Soulo Tent | Winter Mountain Summit Camp⛈ RS Outdoors 2023-01-23 | The Hilleberg Soulo is meant to be the best 1 Person, Four Season expedition tent currently on the market. After many years having avoided trying one I have decided to bite the bullet and give one a go. Conditions looked great for a winter wild camp on a mountain summit close to the Glencoe Ski Centre, but as dusk fell the weather didn’t half take a turn for the worse. Winter West Highland Way | Severe Weather Fail. RS Outdoors 2022-12-24 | West Highland Way during this winter turned out to be more extreme than we had anticipated. It was still however a great hiking and camping experience even with the wild amounts of rain and snow.The West Highland Way runs for 96 miles from Milngavie to Fort William, travelling through some of the most stunning landscapes in Scotland. Dometic Boracay FTC 301 TC | Inflatable Tent - Real World Use Review. RS Outdoors 2022-10-21 | The Boracay FTC 301 TC is a compact yet ideal touring tent; with large full height windows, a rear storage compartment and low-to-high ventilation make for a great camping experience. Out in the Lake District for a few days holiday to take the opportunity to test this new tent and also have a short relaxing break from it all. Wild Camping Overnight Adventure. RS Outdoors 2022-09-18 | I have really enjoyed using this Lux Hexpeak V4a pyramid tent on my latest trip. Note that it is available in both Forest Green or Desert Brown colour and there is even a four-season version with a snow skirt. The construction is pretty good and well stitched using a stronger fabric than some of the more well known ultralight tents available and instead is made using (40D/230T Nylon Ripstop) with an overall weight of 1.2kg. This typical pyramid / tipi single pole shelter design is very easy to erect, especially in poor weather. Teepee tents in general are historically reliable camping shelters and famous for there versatility and ease of erestion. Simply stake out the four corners, slide underneath, place the pole in the centre and add some tension.Once all your gear is in and under cover, all the other pegging points and guy lines can all be sorted out and tensioned if required.It also has a generous floor space which is great for comfort and stowing gear but can also be a drawback as a much larger area is required for pitching it, which may rule out some potential spots where space is tight or ground is very uneven. Inside there is a generous porch with room for gear and cooking if the weather is bad. The shelter can also be used on its own without the inner to create a generous space and also save weight, but most will opt for the single person inner. This adds a little extra warmth on cold nights, helps to prevent draughts and also keeps those pesky biting insects at bay.There are a number of extra options for inside including a two-person inner and a selection of bathtub footprints for use as a single skin setup where the ground is wet. I am 5' 10" and there is enough room for me to lie down on a generous sleeping pad without my face touching the inner tent. However, if you're over 6' in height then the slightly compact inner may be an issue. Solitude in the Cairngorms | Solo Wild Camping. RS Outdoors 2022-07-21 | This particular backpacking and wild camping trip would be a typical mixture of weather extremes. Late morning in the Scottish Cairngorm's was blisteringly hot with the start of the UK wide heatwave as is typical in the Scottish mountains it then soon gave way to 30-40 mph gusts and heavy rain during the evening. However, it was another fine, long walk in the Cairngorm's up to Loch Etchachan which is the highest Loch of this size in the UK with the surface being 927 meters above sea level.It is a great walk and thoroughly recommended. The Lost Valley | Wild Camping Escape. RS Outdoors 2022-04-29 | This was my first ever wild camping trip to the Lost Valley in Glencoe and it did not disappoint! The lost valley or hidden valley is a one-of-a-kind special place, tucked away in between the mountains of Glencoe. Solo Winter Camping | Trying To keep Warm RS Outdoors 2021-12-23 | Trying to keep warm during my first solo wild camping trip of the winter. This trip would also let me test out some new items of kit to help me stay warm when winter camping in the UK. This wild camping location is just to the rear of the Glenshee Ski Centre in Scotland and makes for a fairly easy location to reach. The Cape Wrath Trail - One Amazing Week. RS Outdoors 2021-08-29 | Spent one amazing week solo backpacking and camping on the Cape Wrath Trail. It is considered to be one of the most challenging and difficult long distance backpacking hikes in the UK. It is an unofficial, unmarked and magnificently challenging route for experienced long-distance backpackers, the Trail passes through some of Scotland's most spectacular landscapes.However I believe it should be called the Cape Wrath Challenge as it will challenge you both mentally and physically. It will challenge your fitness, mental fortitude, hill skills and gear selection unlike anything you may have done before. Due to time restraints I had decided to spend 7 days backpacking the Southern Section of the trail with one rest day in the middle. My hike would start from the Corran Ferry crossing and finish up at the small village of Ullapool on the shores of Loch Broom. This was the last section of the CWT I had still to complete having already walked the northern section southward from the Lighthouse to Ullapool and having to pull out due to blisters last year.It normally takes 2-3 weeks to cover the 230-miles through the highlands of Scotland. Most will usually start from Fort William and finally ending up at the Cape Wrath lighthouse which is the most north westerly point in the whole of the UK. The terrain and weather can make travel on the trail difficult day to day and good navigation skills are a must. Many of the sections involves multiple steep ascents and descents which can be difficult, often in remote areas of the highlands with no visible paths or routes. Stunning Wild Camping Trip | Amazing Cloud Inversion. RS Outdoors 2021-07-28 | Overnight wild camping trip with an amazing cloud inversion among the highest mountain peaks in Scotland.Cloud, or temperature inversions in Scotland are a thick layer of mist clinging to the ground. If you are lucky enough to be standing on a hill when this happens you can be treated to incredible vista of a sea of cloud, with island-like mountain tops rising out from the mist.On this trip I was also lucky enough to see my first ever Brocken Spectre which was named after the German mountain on which it was first noted. When an observer stands on a hill which is partially enveloped in mist and in such a position that their shadow is thrown on to the mist, they may get the illusion that the shadow is a person seen dimly through the mist. Wild Camping in The Arrochar Alps | Jumper Home DCF Pyramid Tent. RS Outdoors 2021-06-02 | Out wild camping to try this new pyramid style, ultralight mountain tent.The tent used on this trip was the 1.5P DCF Pyramid made by a guy called 'Jumper Home Studio'. He was small ultralight tent and gear manufacturer based in China and not long after this film was made he sadly passed away in a mountain accident whilst out hiking.The location for this wild camping trip was near the summit of Beinn Ìme, the highest of the Arrochar Alps at (1011 metres). Tarptent Notch Li Review | Good Backpacking Tent For One? RS Outdoors 2021-04-15 | Is the Tarptent Notch Li tent a good one person backpacking setup?The updated for 2020 Tarptent Notch Li is one of the manufacturers lightest double wall shelter and something I have wanted to try for a very long time.This tent is very lightweight and comes across as being very well-made. It was extremely quick and easy to pitch and I really like the two porches and the convenience of having doors on both sides. It does seem to be a good size and weight for long distance backpacking and solo wild camping trips in the UK.I also like the fact that the dyneema fabric doesn’t absorb water or become saggy during the night, it’s still as taut in the morning as it was when first erected.I am also impressed by the little things such as the magnetic tie-backs for the flysheet doors. Little things like this on the tent make it a lot nicer and easier to live with when you’re out hiking and wild camping for weeks on end. It will be interesting to see how it fairs as a one-person backpacking tent in the UK’s variable weather as I take on some long distance walks in the very near future.There are a few things I would add to make it that bit stronger which is mainly for mountain summit camps where high winds are common and can come on without warning. Although not needed according to many reports I will however be adding some additional guy points. From my own experience wild camping and with the simplicity to do modifications I think I will add some for my own piece of mind.Appreciate when spending a lot of money on a tent you shouldn't need to make changes, however no tent is perfect and all have some niggles that could improve it one way or another. Not many reviews or people seem to use them and the reason for this I believe is that they are not sold in many bricks and mortar shops, they seem to be an online purchase only.My thoughts so far after having owned several pairs is that they are very comfortable, waterproof and fit to your feet like a glove. These will be my selection for my upcoming backpacking trip of the 'Cape Wrath Trail' across Scotland.The Goretex does breath pretty well allowing sweat to escape and the pattern of the sole does provide pretty good grip but can still be a bit slippy on very steep, wet ground or wet / slimy rocks. But I have found this to be a common issue across all of Salomons outdoor footwear range to be honest. However having worn this model of boot for many years I am impressed and would easily recommend them. These for me feel a better and more agile boot to the Salomon Quest 4 GTX that is also available. There are reports of people having issues with the material cracking at the toe flex point and then leaking after about 6-9 months of use. This so far has not happened to myself and not seen any failure of the boots except for the sole unit wearing out. I really do wish that Salomon would make a better compound for a lot of the boots they manufacturer which is far sticker for the wilder, wet terrain and also lasts that little bit longer. The grip performance of the sole unit is a niggle that you will see coming up again and again in the forums online. But so far in my own personal experience they seem to wear extremely well with nearly no damage after months and months of abuse. Budget Wild Camping & Backpacking Tent | LANSHAN 1 (2021 Version). RS Outdoors 2021-03-24 | My initial overview of this new 2021 budget ultralight tent offering from 3F UL Gear, the LANSHAN 1. Just giving my initial thoughts on the tents design and make a few comments on things that I would maybe recommend they change in the future to make it even better. However, it looks a well-made tent and I am really looking forward to taking it out to test in the real world.The Lanshan 1 is a very lightweight and affordable tent and an excellent option for those wanting to start out in the world of wild camping and backpacking. The tent is a trekking pole setup which means the tent comes in at an overall weight of around 840 grams and you use one of your own trekking poles to set it up and give it structure. Note that you can also purchase a separate carbon fibre centre pole for it if you prefer to not use trekking poles. The Difference Between Lanshan And Lanshan Pro:1. Lanshan is double-layer. Its inner tent is separated from the rainfly. While the Lanshan Pro is single-layer, and its inner tent is stitched together with the rainfly.2. Lanshan is made from 15d single-coated silicon fabric, while the Lanshan Pro is made from 20d double-coated silicon fabric which is a little lighter and stronger.PLS NOTE:The 3-season comes with an inner tent made from nylon mesh which is thin and breathable. MSR Access 2 Tent Overview. RS Outdoors 2021-03-18 | My new winter tent setup is the Four Season, MSR Access 2. Fairly lightweight, strong and with excellent internal space, what's not to like? This is my review having owned a couple of these tents over the last few years along with the MSR Access 1. I have used the Access range of tents throughout the years, from stormy mountain summit wild camping trips to several multi-week long distance hikes across Scotland. They have performed really well in some atrocious Scottish conditions and so far they have never let me down. However this time I decided to get one again purely for winter camping and it wasn’t based on my past experience with them, or their performance.
