In this easy to follow video guide I cover pitching the Luxe Hexpeak v4a’s flysheet / tarp, installing the stock 1 person / three season inner and easy modifications that you can make in order to make the pitching process as easy as possible for you - while optimising the excellent performance of the tent too!

The luxe hexpeak v4a tent, pitched properly, is a very strong shelter with a tipi design suited to backpacking / bikepacking trips, mountain camping and is capable of withstanding some serious and challenging weather conditions (tested thus far in windy conditions reaching 50mph and constant, heavy rain). The key is nailing the pitch!

While it has a steep learning curve if you aren’t used to a tarp style or pyramid tent, with the right method and some practice you’ll nail it quickly, reducing your pitch times all the while! The Hexpeak is definitely worth the time and effort - for your patience you’ll be rewarded with a storm worthy shelter that sticks to the ground like a limpet on a rock and features an incredible amount of space for its weight.

When it comes to looking for the best four season tents for winter camping or camping in bad weather (strong winds, heavy rain, snow storms etc) it's difficult to find anything that isn't super expensive or heavy.

However, the Luxe Hexpeak v4a, a largely overlooked budget pyramid tent similar to the MLD Duomid without the price tag, proves itself worthy of your attention. As I've shown across my channel, the Hexpeak is an incredibly capable lightweight tent, with excellent bad weather performance, ridiculous strength to weight ratio and a HUGE amount of space under its top-quality flysheet.

These pyramid tents do have a couple of drawbacks, though. The three season stock inner pushes the weight up and it's only really meant for camping in Spring, Summer and Autumn. But, I've solved these issues and in this video I'll show you my latest upgrade to this AWESOME tent; a lightweight four season inner installed for an all-in-one pitch!!

With this new inner, the Hexpeak is now LIGHTER by ~500g, it's WARMER for long nights winter camping, it's MORE VERSATILE for ease of pitching and it's EVEN BETTER for camping in bad weather thanks to its enhanced insulation from strong or cold winds! All in all, this simple modification means that my Hexpeak is now fully equipped for long distance backpacking adventures and four season camping in ALL weather conditions!

On this hiking and wild camping adventure Bryan, Coops the dog and I set off into the Scottish wilderness to enjoy a summit camp on the Merrick, Galloway. We trek through an amazing hidden valley, well away from the crowds, over some seriously challenging terrain!

Our approach to the Merrick was tough; carrying our heavy rucksacks laden with camping equipment over boggy, water laden and tussocky ground before clambering up the side of the mountain towards the summit. Our efforts were rewarded with stunning views and unique insights into the local wilderness; with rutting stags, frogs, dragonflies and other wildlife thriving in this (relatively) untouched landscape.

Getting to the top took longer than expected, leading to a lack of time for landscape photography on the summit, but reaching the top we pitched our tents - Luxe Hexpeak V4A and Sierra Designs High Route 3000 - for a mountain overnighter as the stars began to fill the sky. Galloway is a registered ‘dark sky park’ and as such, the clarity in the night sky is stunning!

With gale force winds, subzero temperatures and heavy rain forecast for the following day, we made the most of the calm weather, but, awaking in our tents to wet and windy conditions we knew that the storm forecasted for later in the day wasn’t far away at all! We made our escape back down the Little Spear and into deep fog, opting to ascend/descend Kirriereoch instead of heading back through the bog in strong winds and heavy rain.

A challenging and frustrating experience, but a great one nonetheless!

Danger, Discipline and... Dairy Cows?

Day 4 on the Ayrshire Coastal Path sees Coops and I on the trail from Girvan to Maidens via Turnberry Lighthouse, hiking through the agricultural lands of South Ayrshire, Scotland.

With a forecast of thunder and lightning plus heavy rain for later in the day, we set off on our backpacking adventure where we dodged tractors on a busy farm, got chased by a herd of inquisitive and overly excited cows, stumbled upon a torpedo on the beach from WW2, found what looked like a space craft, explored a disused military outpost and narrowly avoided getting squished by heavy goods vehicles traveling at 60mph plus after the map led us the wrong way onto a busy arterial road.

Backpacking has been such an incredible way of discovering the beauty of the landscape I grew up in. By getting stuck into some long distance walking, I've come to realise how much we are all missing in the name of convenience! The scenery on this section of the Ayrshire Coastal Path was stunning as always and we had an amazing time - testing our gear, learning valuable lessons and soaking up the rich character of Ayrshire whilst hiking through the landscape.

Join me and my dog on another solo camping adventure in the rough and remote Scottish wilderness - this time, we hike up a mountain trail and break off at a remote bothy to reach the mysterious Loch Enoch, a freshwater loch in the heart of Galloway. We were treated to stunning landscapes, perfect camping conditions and a sense of calm that can only be found by hiking deep into the wilderness!

I pitched the Hexpeak v4a in the shadow of the mountains, at a perfect little spot on the edge of Loch Enoch where the waters surface was like a mirror. The silence was broken only by the sound of curious Geese and hungry trout popping out of the waters to catch flies and the sense of solitude was wonderfully refreshing. Perfect after a long hike in!

The following day, I awake to find that the weather has changed and as we quickly pack up the rain begins to fall. I finish the trip by visiting an old friend - the Grey Man of the Merrick, a rock feature with an eerie appearance!

Hiking Scotland : Ayrshire Coastal Path - Day 6 (Dunure to Ayr)

Outlawed Landscapes 2022-04-17 | Chased by cows and hiking in heavy rain on Day 6 of the Ayrshire Coastal Path (Dunure to Ayr) 😬

My plans for capturing beautiful coastal scenes as I hiked from Dunure Castle to the ancient town of Ayr were thwarted by constant heavy rain, but instead, I gained valuable experience for backpacking in bad weather. My hiking gear was tested, I was chased by cows, my morale was up and down and my dog Coops, well, he loved every minute!

The Ayrshire Coastal Path has been designated as one of Scotland’s Great Trails, forms part of the International Appalachian Trail and in this section I begin at Dunure Castle, make my way north to Bracken Bay via clifftops and remote beaches, before heading to the lighthouse at Ayr Harbour via Greenan Castle.

The Ayrshire Coastal Path also features a 3+ mile diversion from Greenan Castle to Alloway, where iconic historic landmarks made famous by the poetic work of Robert Burns can be found. I didn't walk this diversion due to the heavy rain, but I returned via car to capture a couple of clips for you.

Notes;
Hiking in heavy rain made certain things quite difficult, for example, my movement was restricted by wet shell clothing, access to sensitive technology (camera gear) was limited and finding a sheltered spot to have a break was tough. Experiencing this on a section hike meant that I could take notes for potential solutions (a tarp, umbrella or similar) on future long distance walks.

Being chased by cows is a bit of a risky situation, especially in more remote areas wherein any accidents can become much harder to overcome. Whether solo hiking or hiking with a dog, care must be taken around these animals as they move as a herd and often don't know their own strength. The females can become protective of calfs and male bulls can actually be aggressive. Avoid where possible and if not, keep to the edge of fields.

Hiking Scotland : Ayrshire Coastal Path - Day 5 (Maidens to Dunure via Culzean)

Outlawed Landscapes 2022-04-06 | As part of a long term plan for hiking the length of Scotland with my dog Coops using long distance walking routes such as the West Highland Way and the Cape Wrath Trail, I decided to start my journey at home, section hiking the Ayrshire Coastal Path to gain experience, test out my gear and to work out any issues that may arise on longer routes.

The Ayrshire Coastal Path itself has been designated as one of Scotland’s Great Trails and forms part of the International Appalachian Trail and my journey begins by hiking from the quaint village of Maidens to the equally peaceful fishing village of Dunure 10km up the coast, enjoying stunning deciduous woodlands, rugged clifftops with outstanding views over the sea, expansive sandy beaches and historical landmarks such as Culzean Castle, Dunure Castle and a WW2 Outpost along the way.

Which ultralight tent is best in bad weather? The hexpeak v4a and the lanshan 2 are very different tents in terms of design and build quality. But both have their strengths and their weaknesses - which becomes very apparent when you pitch them on less than ideal ground in strong winds and heavy rain.

The weather forecast was predicting stormy conditions - so I thought it would be an interesting day to test my luxe hexpeak v4a tipi tent against the ultralight 3f ul gear lanshan 2. My main aim was to find out which tent I'd trust more for wildcamping in inclement conditions or for sudden changes in weather whilst on the mountains with my dog.

As you can see in my other videos, wild camping can go very wrong and it's in those moments that you need to know that your camping equipment can handle difficult conditions and keep you safe.

This test was designed to a) see how the tents handle the rough conditions and b) how they compare to each other. I’d fully recommend that you try something similar with your kit; learn its strengths, weaknesses and limitations in a safe location so that you are prepared for any sudden changes in the weather or mistakes made in the field.

Kirriereoch Hill | Solo Mountain Camping in THICK FOG

Outlawed Landscapes 2021-12-20 | Kirriereoch Hill is a boggy, pathless and rugged mountain found in Dumfries and Galloway - offering fantastic hiking and plenty of space on the flat summit plateau to pitch a tent for a remote wild camp on a mountain top. The hill itself used to be classified as a Corbett but has since been demoted to a Donald - it is still worth your attention though, as it offers fantastic views over the Southern Scottish Wilderness!

On this trip I approached Kirriereoch via forestry road beyond Kirriereoch Farm, though other approach routes include Shalloch on Minnoch, Tarfessock and Merrick. I'd hoped to camp on the mountain top and enjoy some landscape photography above a cloud inversion, but unfortunately, the usually reliable forecasts (MWIS and Mountain Forecast) were wrong and my efforts were thwarted. Instead, I was forced to walk and to set up camp in zero percent visibility conditions and persistently strong winds as the light faded around me.

I still had a great time on the hill though, with some interesting light phenomena taking place in the wilderness far below me giving me plenty to think about as I whittled away the many hours of winter darkness and poor weather and of course, as always, I enjoyed hiking and camping with my dog Coops!

The aim was to enjoy a wild / stealth camp at Dunskey Castle - a ruin near Portpatrick and the start of the Southern Upland Way - and enjoy some landscape photography during sunset and sunrise. Once the sun had set, Hubert and I settled down in our tents for something to eat, enjoying the unusually warm Octobers night.

In the middle of the night, I was awoken by my Hexpeak tent being battered by crazy 50mph winds and soon we found ourselves trapped in a rain storm. I had to rush out into the cold and wet night to help Hubert because his Zastrugi Vaquita tent was being pummeled by the gale force wind and was eventually ripped out of the ground!

The luxe hexpeak v4a is an ultralight two man tent suited to backpacking, bikepacking, wild camping and camping in the mountains. I bought this tent based upon reports of just how well they perform in bad weather having experienced challenging conditions whilst camping on the Scottish hills - I didn't want to take others opinions as fact though, so I decided to test the Hexpeak and its capabilities myself!

With forecasts predicting strong winds and the Met Office putting out a yellow warning for heavy rain and flooding across Scotland, I thought it would be a good opportunity to test the tent in the tough conditions one could expect to find whilst wild camping high on the mountain summits.

I found a good spot on the Ayrshire coast that would replicate an exposed mountain summit; a cliff top with a vertical drop of over 100m and pitched as close to the edge as possible so the tent was being hit with the full force of the wind as it came in off the sea. Likewise, I set up the flysheet in my garden and let the heavy rain hammer it for three days, testing it for any water ingress each day.

Hiking The Merrick | A Southern Uplands Classic!

Outlawed Landscapes 2021-09-22 | Hiking the Merrick (843m) - the highest mountain in the South of Scotland. The summit is a wonderful viewpoint with extensive views stretching over Dumfries and Galloway and on a good, clear day, all the way to Snowdonia, the Isle of Man and Ireland!

The Merrick may not have the epic serrated ridgelines of the mountains found in the Western Highlands, but, the views from the summit are pretty much uninterrupted with nothing but beautiful Scottish wilderness. It is claimed that the mountain has one of the longest views in the UK and as a Corbett, it also offers a glorious sense of solitude which can be harder to find on the Munros.

In this video, Coops the dog and I hike up the 'tourist' path from Glentrool, explore the Culsharg bothy and take in Benyellary before we head over Nieve of the Spit (a bealach with views over the open hillside to the East and towards the coast in the West) towards the summit. It’s a steep pull most of the way, but the views from the top really are outstanding - not to mention the sense of freedom one experiences when exploring the Galloway hills!

Hill Names;

The name Merrick originates from the Gaelic ‘beinn meurach’ meaning ‘Sprawling/Branched Mountain’.

The name Benyellary originates from the Gaelic ‘beinn na h-iolaire’ meaning ‘Mountain of the Eagle’

Note; Beinn = Mountain. I use hill/mountain, both meaning the same thing in my dialect

The Luxe Hexpeak v4a is a lightweight hexagonal pyramid (or teepee) tent that is said to withstand some seriously bad weather and in this video, I hike into Galloway for an exposed solo wild camp in the hills to see how it performs in real world conditions after a scary night in the Lanshan 2. I also discuss some of the wild camping equipment that I use on my adventures - since I always forget to show you while filming!

On the day, the skies were full of low altitude cloud so I opted to camp on slightly lower ground to avoid any high winds prevalent above 700m and to avoid getting clagged in and being left without anything to photograph. This particular location (Cornish Hill) is a great wee spot to leave the real world behind and escape for while!

Hidden away on the Ayrshire coast is a secret cave with a dark past… Bennane Head was said to have been the home of infamous Sawney Bean and his murderous cannibal clan - it’s also a particularly beautiful feature on the Ayrshire Coastal Path.

Bean and his incestuous brethren were said to have blighted this particularly lonely stretch of the Ayrshire coast, abducting travellers as they made their way along the road, and dragging them kicking and screaming down the steep cliff face before butchering them for their meat! Sound enticing?

In this video, Coops and I explore the secret cave, enjoying the beautiful landscape and aquamarine waters that surround it and even find what looks like fossils in the rocks!

Dungeon Hill is one of the more remote mountains found in the wilderness of Galloway, with incredible views and a palpable sense of solitude to be enjoyed after a long walk through peat bogs and pathless terrain. I’d been looking forward to wild camping on the summit and with a dynamic forecast of clear skies and blizzard conditions, Hubert and I set off in search of some interesting landscape photography!

As always with Galloway, the views were fantastic & thanks to some careful route planning & navigation we reached the summit in great time, enjoying the winter conditions as we climbed. The temperatures dropped significantly as predicted - but what I didn't realise at the time was that these were the coldest temperatures recorded in April for over 10 years! As the blizzards approached, the scenes around us changed. The curtains would draw around us, before the views opened up again - an amazing experience out there in the glorious Scottish wilderness :)

After lockdown was officially lifted here in Scotland I was excited to get back into the mountains and enjoy some winter wild camping in my new ultralight backpacking tent - the 3F UL Gear Lanshan 2.

I packed my camping gear and my camera equipment and caught the early ferry over to the Isle of Arran with Coops the dog, the forecasts were looking great and we enjoyed an amazing hike up through North Glen Sannox and onto Caisteal Abhail where we would be pitching the tent and spend the night. As we gained altitude, it became clear that the mountain was still in winter condition, with deep snow lining the corries.

Once on the main ridge the subzero winds became very strong, gusting at around 30-40mph with a chill factor of approx -7 degrees centigrade. Reaching the summit, I could hardly walk and I was having issues with the lanshan before disaster struck and I was forced to make a decision; escape off the hill or try and find shelter in which to camp safely in the storm?

Note; whilst the lanshan may not have been a 4 season tent, the rest of my equipment was suited to the dangerous environment / conditions. My mountain safety skills were definitely tested and I'm happy to report that they kept me safe, meaning that I didn't have to make a call to mountain rescue!

Please consider your own skills before setting out into the mountains & ensure you are prepared for any situation!

Having completed the ‘Rhinns of Kells’ and the ‘Range of the Awful Hand’ mountain ranges in Galloway, I decided to challenge myself and trek into the most remote rugged, boggy and remote hills in Southern Scotland - the Dungeon Hills.

This mysterious sub-range of hills capture the imagination, with location names including ‘the murder hole’ and ‘the devils bowling green’ surrounding the roughly hewn and gloriously wild granite bulks of Craignaw, Dungeon Hill and Mullwharcher.

Joined once again by Hubert, Coops and I enjoyed backpacking through the peat bogs and tussocky nonsense to discover what lay beyond the outer rims of the Galloway Hills. We were not disappointed! In this video, we summit Craig Neldricken, Craignairny, Craignaw, Dungeon Hill and Buchan Hill - our longest trek to date.

Hiking in the Galloway Hills is always an adventure, and in this video I join up with members of the Galloway Mountain Rescue team for a traverse of the western sub-range, otherwise known as ‘the Range of the Awful Hand’.

The ridge consists of four mountain tops; Shalloch on Minnoch (775m), Tarfessock (697m), Kirriereoch Hill (786m) and the Merrick (843m) - and a full traverse is a fairly long day, especially when you factor in the long access and escape routes!

The route we had planned started from and ended at Kirriereoch Farm, using the forestry roads to get in and out. However, a recurring knee injury meant that I had to separate from the group on the summit of Kirriereoch Hill and make my way back down through the bogs of the ‘red glen’ - and though I didn’t get to summit the Merrick (which I’d already done three times) I did manage to discover a fantastic new area in the Galloway hills - not dissimilar to the Northern Corries in the Cairngorms!

A massive thanks to Bert and the troops for letting me join them, they taught me a lot of wee lessons and their wicked sense of humour had me laughing all the way!

Hoodens Hill from Loch Doon | Hill Walking in Scotland

Outlawed Landscapes 2021-02-24 | Loch Doon - a wonderful scenic viewpoint - offers plentiful Hiking options for the walker including Hoodens Hill - the Northernmost point in Galloway's rugged Dungeon Hills, acting as an access point to the slightly higher Mullwharcher. With a topography not dissimilar to that of the plateaux in the Cairngorms or the rock strewn peaks of the Far North, the hill is fantastic to walk (though a bit boggy) & offers a great way to escape the daily grind in the South of Scotland.

Coops & I navigated our way to the summit from the banks of Loch Doon using only map & compass, enhancing the experience of solitude and mental wellbeing - there are literally no signs of civilisation out there! The cliffs on the Eastern aspect really give this wee hill its character & though the route down was fraught with hazards, it was a brilliant day out on the hills!

Shalloch on Minnoch | Winter Mountain Camping in EXTREME Cold Weather

Outlawed Landscapes 2021-02-03 | Winter wild camping with my dog on a Scottish mountain in extreme winter conditions and heavy snow. This is my coldest wild camping adventure to date, with temperatures dropping to minus 15 degrees!

As the snow continued to fall upon the Galloway hills, I knew I had to get out there & tick another location off of my list whilst I had the chance. For my next adventure, I chose Shalloch on Minnoch (775m) on the Range of the Awful Hand - a Corbett with fantastic views over the Rhinns of Kells, the Dungeon Hills & Tarfessock & Kirriereoch hill towards Merrick.

After hiking through the heavy snow in whiteout conditions I pitched my OEX Phoxx 2vii tent close to a corniced ledge above the Maidens Bed. With a near constant wind-chill of -15 and with only a boulder as shelter was an experience that I won't forget in a hurry... Filming was incredibly difficult at times & as you'll see, I was covered in ice from the very beginning!

The first snow of winter was falling over Scotland and I wanted to get out onto the hills for some landscape photography in the subzero conditions. Heading out into Galloway with my good friend Hubert and trusty canine companion Coops, we made an ascent of Corserine (841m) with our packs laden with camping gear for a summit camp at 841m.

This was my first ever winter wild camp on top of a mountain and I was not prepared. I spent the night shivering in my three season sleeping bag on only a closed cell foam sleeping mat to insulate me from the ground. My equipment was totally frozen and I struggled to stay warm as the temperature plummeted to a steady -7 degrees with a persistent wind (I didn't record the wind chill factor at the time) and near constant low visibility.

Needless to say, I learned from the experience, having come close to hypothermia. We had a great time though!
