Leylandii tend not to add much biodiversity but always check for nesting birds/avoid doing it in spring/summer.

Choosing the cladding for your garden room can be a tough choice so here I break down how to go about deciding. Obviously I can only really show the cladding choices I made in any detail so this felt like a good way to address the topic more broadly.
In summary, think about: -Vertical or horizontal -Aesthetics -Cost -Durability -Maintenance/Upkeep -Style/Profile -Finish (oil etc)

Was this done during lockdown? It was and I'm aware that in making internet videos I should be vaguely responsible so here's the story: So after my friend Steve helped me with insulating and plaster-boarding my garden room, he caught the DIY bug (okay, bad phrasing) and went on to become a trained electrician for fun. Legend. So he was over in his tradesman capacity doing the electrics in the bedroom and helped cut the MDF as a side job; so all within the rules. More importantly (in my book anyway) we had both isolated for 10 days before, especially us as we had been to hospital to deliver our little one. Thermal mass is an interesting topic so in this video we take a look at the placement of insulation in a concrete slab, with a slant towards doing so for a garden room in the UK.
Some extra notes that would have muddied the video had I included them:
1) Adding any kind of underlay or flooring (laminate for example) over a concrete floor will reduce the thermal mass properties of the concrete underneath. The biggest effect will come from an uncovered slab (for better or worse depending on your climate and use of the building).
2) The diagrams are not to scale but are reasonably accurate. The first option should have insulation up the sides to insulate it from the ground to the sides. Also whether you have a DPM/vapour barrier above the concrete will depend on whether the concrete has fully finished curing or whether you know if there is a DPM under the concrete (an old shed concrete slab for instance). If in doubt add another on top, it won't hurt.
3) All of this is just my layman's opinion. I like science, geography and construction and put them together with a bit of research. You can't go too far wrong with any of the options though π

It's at the front of the house so I was keen for it to look good but not cost a too much. There are a couple of challenges and some problem solving involved which makes the process all the more satisfying.

In this quick video we take a look at the option of using plinth/concrete pad foundations for timber-frame buildings and compare them to dense concrete block foundations that I used for my garden room build.
Chris Wigley gives some first hand shots of these pads in action with the various metal brackets for different joins. He purchased 2.5 tonne plinths from Easy Pads which support single storey timber buildings up to 20m2. He bought just before lockdown (result of the 2020 pandemic for people of the future!) so had to make the decision to buy or not rather quickly.
There are smaller and bigger ones available. Swift Plinths is another manufacturer worth looking at if you decide these are for you. Enjoy!
I go into detail about the 15cm rule and garden room/outbuilding height measurement, including eaves height in this video. It may not be the most exciting topic or make for casual viewing but I see questions coming up again and again in regards to these issues and occasionally mistakes as well-so let's solve it!
These rules are particular to the UK but similar rules exist elsewhere so it might be worth watching all the same.

Sometimes, actually quite often, social media just shows the highlights of peoples' journeys (the so called highlight reel!) and can foster feelings of inadequacy amongst viewers - I definitely feel it on occasion. So to combat that, here's the REAL story: we saved for a long time, got gazumped on the first property we offered on, couldn't find anything we liked for ages and then nearly lost our mortgage offer on this house - so as you can see, it wasn't all rainbows and unicorns but did have a happy conclusion π
Part 14 of a video series about how to self-build a timber-framed garden room office (aka tiny house)/wood workshop in the UK. This video covers the first-fix electrics, U-values and plumbing.
The purpose of this video series is to provide all the information required for viewers to build their own garden room rather than just a montage of the building work. It took me months of research to learn everything in these videos so I hope to save people time and money. The videos are a mix of theory and footage of the build including all the mistakes I made along the way. I am not a builder or tradesman, just a keen DIY-er with some basic tools. Everyone can do this! In the longer term, I hope to turn this channel into a community for garden room self-builders and to eventually evolve into a woodworking projects channel - the real purpose of my garden room!
Garden room ideas: workshop, office, games room, cinema room, art studio, music studio, yoga retreat, spare bedroom, annexe or run a home business such as yoga classes or hair salon.

Insulation is a complicated topic so in this video I just give an overview to give you the necessary knowledge to get building. I didn't mention thermal bridging, which is cold moving through the floor joists which are not insulated. I'll discuss this further in a later video about the roof insulation.

One thing I forgot to say in the video is to use the most twisted, cupped or warped timbers for the shorter pieces such as the noggins and keep the straightest timbers for lengthier uses!

Materials: 7N dense concrete blocks (Β£1.44 each) Floor timbers (see next vid for more info) Hardcore Portland cement Sand Weed fabric and plastic pegs Thermolite blocks for retaining wall as can be cut with a saw unlike dense blocks.
If I were doing this again, Iβd use a bed of mortar instead of sand on top of the hardcore as this would make it easier getting the first block level. I used a 1:4/1:5 cement to sand mix- the less cement, the stronger it cures. The less water used, the stronger it cures. I added just enough to make it pliable in order to level the blocks. I sprayed the mortar with water for a couple of days to slow the curing time which also makes it stronger.

Big thanks to all those who have subscribed and waited patiently for the next video. I purposely put in some shots of the building at a future stage to keep you interested. Future videos will come more quickly now as it's easier to create videos of footage rather than on the theory behind what I decided.
