WARNING WD-40 silicone remover FAIL

This is what happened to me when I chose to use WD40 to remove old bathroom silicone, rather than my usual method of just plain elbow grease and cutting it out. I then normally clean it up with Isopropyl alcohol or PVCu frame cleaner.

Unless you can get 100% of the old WD-40 off of all mating surfaces your run the risk of what happened to me, contamination. This took about two weeks to happen but it slowly spread until a complete re sealing of the bath is now required.

Replace a Slate - Hall Hook Method

In this video I will be replace a roof slate and put a new replacement in. I have already covered how to change a slate in a previous video, but this time rather than using the traditional and cheap lead tingle or tag, I will be using a hall hook.

A hall hook is a great way of securing a slate, especially if the replacement slates need to be virtually invisible.

Ebac Powerdri 18L Dehumidifier Review

In this video we review and test the Ebac Powerdri 18L dehumidifier. This is one of their latest super economical compressor based dehumidifiers aimed at the trade, workshop, and garage use.

It was tested in my home environment as usual, and in my metal shed used for storing surplus work gear. This was a tough test because of the low temperatures experienced this time of year in a totally unheated garden shed. The highest was 10C and the lowest 2 or 1C over a 24 hour period.

In this video we will be taking a look at a flat roof repair that will cover large areas, or the whole roof if you need it to. This repair uses a solvent based bitumen sealant, the advantage being that it's low cost, dries quickly, and is waterproof fast.

In this video we review and test the Ebac 3850e dehumidifier. This is one of their latest super economical compressor based dehumidifiers with smart control from the 3000 series range.

In tests I found this to be very economical at only 180w on maximum speed, which for a 21Litre whole house dehumidifier is very competitive.

Aluminium Gutter Repair - Stop Leaky Guttering

This video takes a look at how to repair aluminium guttering to a good standard that should last many years. Often aluminum guttering will start to leak from a joint, corner, or stop end after about 10 years. Especially if holding standing water.

Thumbing more mastic over the stop of the original built up sealant can fail early, as can a simple paint on solution. This aluminum gutter repair has worked well for me over the years, and one tube of gutter sealant and a roll of scrim will repair many, many gutter leaks.

Part 6 Mix Fibreglass GRP Resin & Topcoat or Colour

This video shows how easy it is to mix fibreglass resin and a colour topcoat. The GRP resins used here were for fibreglass roofing but polyester resins are pretty much the same, so if you're using a standard fibreglass resin and a colour like a Flowcoat or Gelcoat it will be the same, but always check the side of your resins for instructions.

Also shown is how to clean your buckets and dispose of old resin rollers and brushes with the minimum of fuss. Best results are achieved if you can pop out the old resin about 30 mins after it has cured in the bucket because the resin is still soft and peels away from the sides easily.

Fibreglass a Van or Truck Floor - GRP Bed Liner

In this video I'm going to show you how to fibreglass the floor of a van or truck to give a hard wearing and easy to clean custom bed liner, although walls can also be done with minimal fuss.

This is also an ideal alternative to some van and truck bedliner kits, and a custom bedliner can be achieved often at a fraction of the cost. What's more when they wear out or get damaged they are very easy to clean and re-coat, which is impossible with plastic bed liners often used in some vans and pickup trucks.

This popular 2 speed dehumidifier is efficient, and has an extremely low power consumption of only 255 watts, making it very economical and cheap to run. Probably one of the cheapest to run that I've seen for up to a 5 bedroom house that actually works well. Just keep in mind this is a compressor based dehumidifier, so if you are thinking of using it in unheated or cool locations, you may be better of with a desiccant type dehumidifier instead, and those are explained on the website in the link below.

How to Point a Brickwork Wall or Repoint a Chimney

This how to video deals with pointing or repointing brickwork often found on brick walls, chimney stacks or lead flashings to roofs.

The method I'm using here I have found to be very good at stopping the ingress of water, particularly when used with any sort of roof flashing as well. Getting mortar right to the back of any chase is often the key for long life, stopping mortar blowing out and preventing water ingress long term.

Roof Ventilation Smoke Bomb Test in Attic

This video shows how easy it is these days to install and fit roof ventilation with dedicated roof tile vents as a direct swap.

In this video I'm fitting a low profile roof tile vent with a bathroom extractor fan pipe connected as well. If you are looking for a simple way to connect a bathroom exhaust fan to ventilate outside without having to cut holes in your wall, fascias or soffits this could be a simple solution for you.

Even roofers get a leak sometimes. After the last 48 hour downpour here in the UK I got a leak in my felt flat roof, it's a Job that has been scheduled for last year that I never quite got round to.

In this video you can see me using a very common liquid waterproofer used in the trade for various small repairs just like sealing this felt roof. It seals to most surfaces with no adverse reaction and is ideal for no flame roof repairs, especially when reinforced over small splits or cracks.

In this video I will be installing an abutment soaker also known commonly as an abutment gutter, or secret gutter. This is a slightly unusual example as it shows the fitting of the abutment gutter into a concrete profiled tile roof rather than the usual flat profiled tiles. Mixing a small sand and cement bucket mix like this by hand is not only fast, but very cheap for small DIY jobs around the house. A lot of repair jobs even for professionals involve 'knocking up' small amounts of mortar like this. This is I believe an essential life skill, like knowing how to wire a plug, or unblock a sink.

Great for small pointing jobs, pointing lead flashings, brickwork chases, walls and chimney to name but a few...

Mixing sand and cement by hand like this is a great way to make enough mortar for DIY projects. Mixing mortar with a builders spot like this is fantastic because it allows you to keep sand and cement mixes smaller, therefor fresher and better.

The only trouble with 'knocking up' any sort of spot mix or wheel barrow mix, has been taking care of your back. Here I give my technique for a spot mix that I don't find back intensive.

This videos deals with the basic issues in understanding and identifying which chimney pot is connected to which flue, and then in turn to a particular fireplace. Once you know the basics of construction it removes a little bit of the mystery, so even if your chimney flues are not exactly the same it may help.

Always test with a good smoke bomb or pellet to confirm or crush your theory, that's shown too.

I then show you how to measure a chimney pot from the floor so you can work out the internal size and the outside diameter, very handy for fitting chimney cowls or chimney caps.

Remember, blocking off the wrong flue could be very dangerous, if in any doubt call in a professional !!!

In this video I show 3 different ways to cap off a disused chimney that does not alter the structure of the chimney stack. This way any future change of mind and no money has to be spent fitting new chimney pots or altering brickwork.

If your thinking of chimney capping you will see two off the shelf solutions that can be purchased at a good roofing yard or online via the website link.

The third method is a very old fashioned way to seal a chimney with lead, this really should be a temporary solution only, but it will seal a chimney waterproof and airtight.

Remember capping off the wrong chimney can be very dangerous, if you are in any doubt call in a professional!!!
