The entire team was eager to head back to the same spot. And we were not even there 20 minutes before a tortoise was seen eroding out of the hill.The team was pretty sure it was a fairly small tortoise. and estimated it at about 12 inches across... So I started digging, figuring I could get it out of the ground by lunch...I was wrong. This place has become one of my favorite places to visit and I am super excited to show you all around! So come with me on this adventure!On day 8 we headed to one of the most popular spots for our team to hunt. The Plateau! this area is not far from the highlands but it is one of the most fruitful places to look for fossils that we explore. And it did not disappoint! At first, the strange fossil found eroding out of the ground was believed to be a pelvis... However as I dug around it, I discovered this pelvis has teeth! Now it is a race against the clock to uncover what we now know to be a skull from the ground as the weather quickly starts to turn bad. going from a comfortable 70 degrees and sunny to 65mph winds and a hale storm in less than an hour! Just 35 miles away from where we hunt in the White River Formation there was a treasure-trove of fossils from animals that existed 8 million years later.What is super fascinating about these creatures is that many of them appear to be the direct descendants of the Oligocene animals we have been hunting for! Megalocnus rodens, this small sloth hid away on islands in the Caribbean and managed to survive much longer than most of it's giant relatives on the main land. Dying out less than 4000 years ago?We have also found a pretty decent amount of fossil evidence of this creature... Which brings up the question why have most people never heard of this animal?
