How Do Scientists Know If A Dinosaur Is Male or Female? EDGE Science 2024-06-08 | How do paleontologists know the sex of a dinosaur fossil? The quick answer is that they don’t! However, some fancy techniques have been concocted in the last 30 or so years that have helped provide more solid answers on if a given dinosaur or prehistoric animal is a male or female. This also drastically changes depending on what group of animals we are talking about. It’s much easier to determine the sex of more recent extinct mammals than ancient dinosaurs because in many cases there are living cousins and descendants of these ancient mammals with us today for comparison. Sometimes sexual dimorphism – or the differences between the sexes – is very obvious and pronounced. Male gorillas are far larger and more robust than females – but humans have the least amount of sexual dimorphism among the apes. Bizarre Copycat Dinosaur – ‘Hellboy’ – Helped Paleontologist Propose To Girlfriend EDGE Science 2024-05-27 | The Ceratopsoid dinosaurs were incredibly diverse and common animals throughout the Cretaceous period. However, despite what I just said, the group is incredibly weird compared to pretty much every other dinosaur group during the Cretaceous period for how relatively isolated they were. They are pretty much only known from the western half of North America – from Alaska to Mexico. Only one member of the advanced Ceratopsoidea is known from Asia, and none from any other continent. I preempted the last statement with “pretty much” because there were other types of early horned dinosaurs living across Eurasia and there are tantalizing hints of some in the eastern half of North America – however, these critters diverged from the horned dinosaur group long before forms such as Diabloceratops or even the much later Triceratops. Most other groups of dinosaurs during this period of time were present across many continents. Hell, even the Titanosaurs – once considered South American endemics – were present worldwide. The general biodiversity of dinosaurs and the other weird critters they lived with had been shaken up many times. The hadrosaurs were the most common large-bodied herbivorous animals across much of the world. Titanosaurian sauropods were the only things bigger but were much more common in the southern hemisphere. The ceratopsians, or horned dinosaurs, were also among the most diverse and common animals worldwide throughout the Cretaceous period.
