In this episode of Flight Chops, (a #Travel Adventure filmed in “the before times” of 2019), we’re hosted by our friends at Hässlö Flygförening, just outside of Stockholm. Hässlö Flygförening is located at Stockholm Västerås Airport (ICAO code ESOW) about an hour drive from Stockholm. With more than 600 members they are the largest flying club in northern Europe.
Being so close to Stockholm, while still keeping out of the more congested airspace around the big international airport, HFF is a great place to start your #GeneralAviation flying adventure in #Sweden.
They have access to many different airplanes to rent, together with a group of highly competent instructors ranging from airline captains to aerobatic instructors.
For pilots visiting Sweden, they can assist with anything from information, checkout flights on new types to the paperwork needed to act as PIC on a Swedish registered plane without an EASA license.

In this episode, Jason shoots some great B-Roll of what was honestly not planned to be an episode. I took Chris (an American instrument rated commercial pilot) for his first exposure to Spins (and initial #Aerobatics ). In Canada, our initial training covers spins (I actually did spins in a glider before going solo). We captured some great stuff and decided to share from Chris’ point of view.
Jason does Digital Marketing for longtime supporters of the channel, Infinite Flight. He uses Infinite Flight and ForeFlight to brief trips like this one, especially when there will be a high workload into a new place. On this trip, we visited Sporty’s Pilot Shop to meet up with Jon Ostrower and Thomas and Dwight Nield of Yawman Flight. Yawman is coming to market this year with their gamepad specifically designed for flight simulators, the Arrow. The Yawman crew demoed the Arrow using Infinite Flight, X-Plane, and MSFS2020. Future episodes will cover the IFR #Flying to get there, and show more of the Yawman Arrow.

NONE of the models or forecasts saw that coming... Mid way through the flight the TAFs updated while we watched the storms populate on the radar thanks to SiriusXM Aviation data on the Garmin avionics and right beside me on ForeFlight. It was somewhat tense, but easy to handle and divert to wait it out in calm conditions ~30 miles away. (also a huge shout out to ATC - the controller working our flight was top notch!) But my fear with keeping them on, is that ice and slush could collect inside the wheel pant, and possibly freeze, jamming a brake or wheel causing a ground loop or nose over accident during take off or landing... Here’s some additional context from Luke, about exactly what we are doing, and why we are doing it:
In Canada, Transport Canada requires an amateur built aircraft to undergo what is known as a “simplified one-off aerobatic demonstration”. Since the airworthiness of an amateur built airplane is entirely dependant on the standards left to the builder. TC provides a straightforward check of items to be completed first to obtain a special flight permit which allows a specifically qualified individual to carry out the aerobatic demonstration flight. The guidance provided is found in Airworthiness Manual Advisory (AMA) No. 549.101A. It should be noted that this process is specific to Canada. Although not required in the USA, it is highly recommended that a properly qualified aerobatic pilot perform a similar validation flight of the full envelope characteristics of an amateur built airplane.

#Wisk is an independent company, backed by The Boeing Company and Kitty Hawk Corporation. They are a leading Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) company and developer of the world’s first self-flying, all-electric, four-seat #eVTOL #airtaxi. Their flying Uber-alternative will operate autonomously with remote flight monitoring, and will mix into busy airspace at existing airports.
With the announcement today of a Concept of Operations (Con-Ops) for Uncrewed Urban Air Mobility, and it being filed with the FAA, Wisk is making serious progress towards making safe, everyday flight, for everyone, a commercial reality.
In 2010, a team set out to explore the possibilities of electric, vertical takeoff and landing flight. In 2019, that team and its generations of aircraft became Wisk through a joint venture between the Boeing Company and Kitty Hawk Corporation. Since 2010, Wisk has developed six generations of aircraft, resulting in the industry’s largest fleet of AAM eVTOL aircraft, and have completed more than 1600+ test flights without an accident. In addition to being an investor, Boeing is also a strategic partner to Wisk, providing development, testing, and certification support. Together they are shaping the future of mobility. Wisk’s mission: to make safe, everyday flight a reality for everyone.

Proudly associated with ForeFlight: foreflight.com/flightchops
In this episode, I’m building solo time reviewing the #SuperPatriot, the latest #STOL #SuperCub variant on the market. We documented what appeared to be an anomaly with the tail during full power static take offs, which raised a lot of alarm bells in the comments of the previous episode - so we’re doing a deep dive to investigate it further. Dave and I had a lot of fun and both of us became quite comfortable flying this airplane during the course of the month that I had it at home. Over this and the next episodes we’ll share more detailed thoughts and opinions of the handling characteristics, maneuverability and speed range envelope afforded by the Super Patriot STOL Cub-Variant.

Proudly associated with ForeFlight: foreflight.com/flightchops We visited Martin in Pontiac, Michigan, who just finished his RV-8 build after 7 long years. The first test flight did not go as planned! But as test flights are meant to do, it revealed an interesting, yet serious problem with the build that Martin quickly solved, allowing us to resume and complete the test flight program.
Dave is considering taking on more test flying work, for more details reach out to: testpilot@davidcarrick.ca
Martin’s new RV-8 has been a 7 year labor of love and the end result is nothing short of spectacular. He also installed Garmin Avionics, which in my opinion offer the best toolset possible, especially when combined with ForeFlight.

About the Van’s Aircraft RV-14 Glare Shield, from Mike at Eye Level Aviation: As a Van’s Aircraft RV-14 builder, I had a difficult time finding a glare shield that fit so I decided to make my own. With the help of my sister, who has been sewing with leather for over 30 years and has sewn products that are utilized in Boeing flight decks, we came up with a design and prototype. We liked how it made the cockpit look professional and finished so we decided to produce a few glare shields for the Van’s Aircraft RV-14 fleet. Starting with prototypes to test on some flying Van’s Aircraft R-14s, we solicited feedback from pilots and implemented their suggestions, including a few ideas from Flight Chops. The company “Eye Level Aviation” was formed and we sell the glare shields through Aircraft Specialty Flightlines, a known and respected supplier and innovator of components for Van’s and other experimental aircraft.

Proudly associated with ForeFlight: foreflight.com/flightchops
This episode covers IFR training with Dennis and Justin; we execute several approaches and go arounds using the automation of the new Garmin Avionics in the Van’s Aircraft RV-14.
At the time of this training, I was recently out of IFR currency; due for my IPC Instrument Proficiency Check, which is basically a check ride we have to do here every 2 years. I knew I’d be flying the much more complex and capable avionics, so I arranged to fly the IPC in this airplane BUT needed to get training to do so. At that point I had ~50 hours VFR flying and had a basic understanding of the autopilot, but had not been doing any advanced programming of the avionics yet.
Dennis' Disclaimer:
Flying IFR in actual IFR can be dangerous stuff. There is no substitute for proper training in your own equipment. The consequences are just too dire. Find a good instructor, learn your equipment. TAKE IT SERIUOUSLY. Take it on with caution and respect. Don’t jump into the deep water right away; And get recurrent training once in a while.
Having been working closely with Dennis for over a decade, I am proud to be able to recommend his services to anyone that wants to take their flying to the next level. Our relationship started when I was a rusty VFR pilot needing to get recurrent… that led to Dennis introducing me to tailwheel flying which changed everything about where I was headed as an aviator. Then came multi engine and IFR flying. It’s been awesome to have Dennis as a mentor all these years!

During my DA62 familiarization flight at Diamond Aircraft’s base in London, Ontario prior to departing for Austria, I tested the Bose ProFlight in-ear headset; I already knew it was comfortable, but I wanted to see how the active noise canceling held up, and it was impressive - I am not surprised it is what Micke wears exclusively when flying Diamond Twins (which are admittedly quieter than most regular piston powered aircraft).

Micke is following behind in the DA42, allowing us to bird dog for weather using sophisticated weather radar and Garmin avionics fitted on the DA-62. This flight was #IFR but we were above the main cloud layer for most of the journey. Arriving in Greenland we had a little fun on the visual approach and nearly called a go around to do it again (joking!). Ep OneFlightChops2022-01-07 | Part 1 - DA-62 familiarization and Flight Prep for North Atlantic Crossing. The biggest #generalaviation Flight I’ve ever flown! Austria to Canada. Proudly associated with ForeFlight: foreflight.com/flightchops
In this multi-part series, the largest general aviation project in FlightChops history, ride along with us as we team up with the Diamond Aircraft ferry crew and act as pilot flying on delivery of a new DA-62 light twin aircraft from Vienna, Austria to the Canadian base in London, Ontario Canada.
In this episode we get familiarized with the DA-62 prior to heading to Diamond Aircraft’s factory in Austria where we meet with Martin and Micke and get some further training on the DA-42 that Micke will be flying in tandem with us back to Canada.
During our initial “big briefing” as I’m calling it. we discovered a great deal of the flight will be IMC which presents a great opportunity to further refine my #IFR flying. We relied a great deal on ForeFlight for the mission planning and as a backup throughout the journey.
I also made a point to test out over-the-ear and in-ear headsets while getting familiar with the DA-62. The Bose ProFlight in-ear headset ended up being incredibly comfortable and the noise cancelling was far superior to what I expected was possible from an in-ear set in a piston aircraft.
As the journey unfolds, we will release some awesome extended footage to Patrons between each consecutively published episode.
Keep an eye out as we release each #oceancrossing episode back to back!

After a record breaking wildfire season, large portions of British Columbia Canada are now experiencing catastrophic #BCFlood . The area was overwhelmed with devastation due to the recent wildfires and now massive amounts of precipitation brought by the Pineapple Express have caused even further, widespread devastation.
This ongoing torrent of rain unleashed #landslides, caused major flooding, and caused rivers to forge new paths wiping out people’s properties, washing away homes, stranding and drowning livestock, and obliterating kilometers of roads, highways, and multiple bridges.. and in many places any conceivable place to rebuild them without extraordinary expense and engineering has also been washed away and is precariously subject to future landslides, erosion and flooding; amongst all the devastation throughout the interior, part of Abbotsford, BC, known as Sumas Prairie has also been catastrophically flooded, submerging massive tracts of land, homes, farms, and businesses.
“This is not over, by a long shot.”
Unfortunately, the response to date from the government has been inadequate; despite the best efforts of the members on the ground and those in command, there just aren’t enough resources being allocated.
This special episode recognizes the bold and heroic efforts of a group of civilian #PrivatePilots (and @mrbentley_thedog) who have more than stepped up to provide emergency relief flights and supply runs to hundreds of people and many communities cut off by these unprecedented events.

#AlaskaFlying in the DHC-2 Beaver through Prince William Sound, the site of the 1989 Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, to learn that the 2011 tsunami in Japan along with general pollution is now causing hundreds of miles of pristine coastal beaches to become an inadvertent dumping ground and collection point for tons of primarily plastic debris. Our oceans, rivers, and beaches are becoming filled with plastic and trash.
As part of the #TeamSeas initiative, the goal is to raise $30M to remove 30M pounds of plastic and trash from oceans, rivers and waterways. See more below and how you can donate and become a part of this amazing effort. For every $1 raised, #TeamSeas nonprofit partners #TheOceanCleanUp and Ocean Conservancy will clean up 1 pound of trash from our oceans, rivers, and beaches! Team Up To Clean Up! teamseas.org
Martin and Tim from APEX Alaska were awesome for setting everything up to do this! It’s not launched yet, but when it is they’ll have you covered end to end with amazing lakeside accommodations for summer and winter training at the Alaska Aviation Adventure HQ. Pilots would come and join APEX to “expand” their flying skills, get to see aviation from a different angle while experiencing flying in Alaska. apexak.com
How #TeamSeas works: 100% of the money raised by #TeamSeas goes directly to #TeamSeas nonprofit partners: #TheOceanCleanUp (theoceancleanup.com) and Ocean Conservancy (https://oceanconservancy.org). Visit teamseas.org to contribute to this incredible cause and pass along the link to your friends, family, and colleagues so they too may share and we can bring more awareness to this awful and accelerating plight on our waterways and environment at large. Together, we can help reach the $30M goal and make a significant impact in reducing 30M pounds of plastic and trash that’s accumulating in our most vulnerable waterways. In this episode of Flight Chops, we’re again putting the new FlightChops #VansAircraft RV-14 through the paces, logging more break-in time on the Lycoming Thunderbolt engine. We use CloudAhoy’s precision scoring and the Tracklog Import features to import the day’s flight data from the Garmin panel. Dave and I score our take offs, traffic patterns, and try to manage and perfect our descent profile for #Landing at CYQG.
Post your #CloudAhoyScore to Twitter, Instagram and Facebook!
The system works by auto-recognizing many VFR and IFR maneuvers. The updated landing scoring features in CloudAhoy are insanely detailed, to help debrief, analyse, and improve with a concentration on target airspeed, rate of descent, and centerline alignment. The system was able to significantly improve my score by looking at the speed at 50 feet AGL rather than over the threshold as it had done in the previous iteration. (This works for visual approaches ending with short and long field landings). The score for the same flight went from 63 before the update to 92 with the enhancements applied in the latest debrief. This was home base on a big runway with fairly easy conditions, so I’ve still got a lot of work to do to become proficient and efficient at managing energy in the #VansAircraft RV-14.

I literally got blood in the journey log - so to say it took blood sweat and tears is not even an exaggeration.
- IMPORTANT NOTICE AND DISCLAIMER -
This video is entertainment and not meant to be instructional. Please review your own aircraft / engine manufacturer’s instructions for your break in procedures. Both Glenn and I are running Lycoming IO390 Thunderbolt engines with angle valves. While we may want to run CHTs even hotter than we are, we don’t want to run as hot as a break in for an engine with traditional parallel valves. The main mechanism for controlling temps is leaning. So, throughout these flights we are VERY cognizant of the mixture setting.

In this episode of Flight Chops, (a #Travel Adventure filmed in “the before times” of 2019), we’re hosted by our friends at Hässlö Flygförening, just outside of Stockholm and have the opportunity to fly a 1941 Klemm 35 WWII German Air Force warbird trainer.
