IFR Diversion due to NOT Forecast Storms! #shorts FlightChops 2023-03-01 | This was an amazing operational IFR experience - I planned the heck out of this flight, prepared for all the expected threats (mostly icing risk and high winds)... and then BOOM - thunderstorms in late February in Ohio. NONE of the models or forecasts saw that coming... Mid way through the flight the TAFs updated while we watched the storms populate on the radar thanks to SiriusXM Aviation data on the Garmin avionics and right beside me on ForeFlight. It was somewhat tense, but easy to handle and divert to wait it out in calm conditions ~30 miles away. (also a huge shout out to ATC - the controller working our flight was top notch!) First Solo in the T6: Start Up + Take Off! #shorts FlightChops 2023-02-07 | What are your Favourite Flying Memories (and Sounds)?! This is one of mine: Being signed off to solo the T6 / Harvard is one of my proudest achievements, and I’m so glad I was able to capture and share it! Nothing beats the sound of the inertial starter kicking in for the massive 1340 cubic inch 600 HP Super Charged Radial engine on this thing! At Take Off power, the prop tips break the sound barrier, which is what makes that signature T6 sound! Wheel Pants On or OFF for Winter Flying? #shorts FlightChops 2023-01-30 | The downside of flying with out wheel pants is that you're slower, and there's a higher risk of stone chips on the underside of the wings, flaps, and even the tail... But my fear with keeping them on, is that ice and slush could collect inside the wheel pant, and possibly freeze, jamming a brake or wheel causing a ground loop or nose over accident during take off or landing... So I decided not to fly with 'em - at least not at airports that have this much surface contamination. What are your thoughts?

Since the airworthiness of an amateur built airplane is entirely dependant on the standards left to the builder. TC provides a straightforward check of items to be completed first to obtain a special flight permit which allows a specifically qualified individual to carry out the aerobatic demonstration flight. The guidance provided is found in Airworthiness Manual Advisory (AMA) No. 549.101A. It should be noted that this process is specific to Canada. Although not required in the USA, it is highly recommended that a properly qualified aerobatic pilot perform a similar validation flight of the full envelope characteristics of an amateur built airplane. Instrument Flight Test #2 PASSED! - Flying IFR with FULL Automation FlightChops 2022-05-13 | #IFR training with with Dennis preparing for my proficiency check. Proudly associated with ForeFlight: foreflight.com/flightchopsThis episode covers IFR training with Dennis and Justin; we execute several approaches and go arounds using the automation of the new Garmin Avionics in the Van’s Aircraft RV-14.At the time of this training, I was recently out of IFR currency; due for my IPC Instrument Proficiency Check, which is basically a check ride we have to do here every 2 years. I knew I’d be flying the much more complex and capable avionics, so I arranged to fly the IPC in this airplane BUT needed to get training to do so. At that point I had ~50 hours VFR flying and had a basic understanding of the autopilot, but had not been doing any advanced programming of the avionics yet. Dennis' Disclaimer: Flying IFR in actual IFR can be dangerous stuff. There is no substitute for proper training in your own equipment. The consequences are just too dire. Find a good instructor, learn your equipment. TAKE IT SERIUOUSLY. Take it on with caution and respect. Don’t jump into the deep water right away;And get recurrent training once in a while.Having been working closely with Dennis for over a decade, I am proud to be able to recommend his services to anyone that wants to take their flying to the next level. During our initial “big briefing” as I’m calling it. we discovered a great deal of the flight will be IMC which presents a great opportunity to further refine my #IFR flying. We relied a great deal on ForeFlight for the mission planning and as a backup throughout the journey.I also made a point to test out over-the-ear and in-ear headsets while getting familiar with the DA-62. The Bose ProFlight in-ear headset ended up being incredibly comfortable and the noise cancelling was far superior to what I expected was possible from an in-ear set in a piston aircraft. We use CloudAhoy’s precision scoring and the Tracklog Import features to import the day’s flight data from the Garmin panel. Dave and I score our take offs, traffic patterns, and try to manage and perfect our descent profile for #Landing at CYQG. Post your #CloudAhoyScore to Twitter, Instagram and Facebook! The system works by auto-recognizing many VFR and IFR maneuvers. The updated landing scoring features in CloudAhoy are insanely detailed, to help debrief, analyse, and improve with a concentration on target airspeed, rate of descent, and centerline alignment. The system was able to significantly improve my score by looking at the speed at 50 feet AGL rather than over the threshold as it had done in the previous iteration. (This works for visual approaches ending with short and long field landings). The score for the same flight went from 63 before the update to 92 with the enhancements applied in the latest debrief. This was home base on a big runway with fairly easy conditions, so I’ve still got a lot of work to do to become proficient and efficient at managing energy in the #VansAircraft RV-14. Dave and I logged 14.9 hours Flight Time and 13.5 hours Air Time in one 24 hour period flying an extended pattern within 25 miles of the Windsor, ON Canada Airport (CYQG) - all within weeks of our departure for #AirVenture in Oshkosh. I literally got blood in the journey log - so to say it took blood sweat and tears is not even an exaggeration. - IMPORTANT NOTICE AND DISCLAIMER - This video is entertainment and not meant to be instructional. Please review your own aircraft / engine manufacturer’s instructions for your break in procedures. Both Glenn and I are running Lycoming IO390 Thunderbolt engines with angle valves. While we may want to run CHTs even hotter than we are, we don’t want to run as hot as a break in for an engine with traditional parallel valves. The main mechanism for controlling temps is leaning.
