This video zooms into WOH G64, a dying star in the Large Magellanic Cloud, 160 000 light-years from us. This is the first close-up image of a star outside our galaxy.

The various images shown here were taken with different telescopes at different times, and have been blended together to create this zoom.

At the end of the video we see an actual image of the dusty cocoon that surrounds the star, taken with ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer, and an artist’s impression that illustrates this.
