Here's an excellent combination of good hacks put together that will make your gameplay experience more enjoyable when you play this game. For more information and a place to download the patches for these hacks, keep reading.
The variable width font causes the terribly slow text speed of the original game to be much more bearable, as it draws more text at a time, and without needing to press the buttons to advance the dialogue as much. The font looks very nice and readable. Even the annoyingly long Compass text isn't as bad anymore (at the end of the video).
The Quality of Life Improvements hack removes those annoying messages from when you don't have the item to deal with something yet. "Wow, this is really heavy! You won't be able to lift it with just your bare hands..." and other similar pieces of text are gone. Additionally, Pieces of Power and Guardian Acorns don't flash their text on screen, halting your game temporarily--when you move over them, you get their effects immediately. It also removes the beeping when you are at low health.
Combine these two and you get perhaps one of the most ideal versions of Link's Awakening DX to play with! You will need to apply the Variable Width Font hack first, to a v1.2 version of the ROM, then apply the compatible version of the Quality of Life hack on top of that patched game.
The VWF hack is here: romhacking.net/hacks/2414
And the QoL hack is here: romhacking.net/hacks/3597
Alternatively, you can try Link's Awakening Redux here, which already combines these existing hacks into a single, more definitive version: romhacking.net/hacks/4672
Enjoy!
