He was convinced that Batman would be irrelevant if he didn't break the rule. In 2016, Batman made his DCEU debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which was a contentious preview of things to come.
The film's bloated storyline, its apparent attempt to force Batman into the DCEU timeline, and its too gloomy tone were all criticized by critics.
For many viewers, it was sufficient to see Batman breach his most important rule and disregard it completely.
