What would still work inside your house if your internet connection disappeared today?
Your internet connection and your home network are not the same thing. Even when your ISP is offline, your computers, servers, storage devices, media systems, and other local services should still be able to communicate.
In this video, I explain why a local first home network is practical infrastructure planning—not doomsday preparation or an argument against the cloud. We’ll look at how local DNS, file storage, documentation, backups, media, and learning tools can remain useful during an internet outage.
I also discuss examples such as Pi-hole, Jellyfin, Syncthing, Nextcloud, Samba shares, local wikis, and NAS storage. This is not a complete setup tutorial. The goal is to help you evaluate your current network and identify outside dependencies you may not realize you have.
Ask yourself:
- What can you still access locally?
- Will your local hostnames continue working?
- Can your family reach important files and media?
- Are your recovery instructions available without the internet?
