The baby great horned owls will displays a whitish gray down with some markings in brown as they emerge for the first time. As the days pass, the owlets begin to show more brown down the cinnamon buff. When the juvenile turns into an adult the brown-colored down begins to fade away usually in the summer. At the one year age they show almost no brown down instead at that point they look quite mature. The one year owl also does not display any ear tuft . Which is a prominent display on the great horned owl's arrangement.
While in the nest the baby owlets with learn to grasp the food and also climb up the branches. At 70 days old they can defend themselves .
Baby owls calls are different then the adults . The baby owl will produce a pretty high-pitched sound. They will use different call for different events.They will also mimic the hooting sound of their parents. Also they will call out their parents for food.
The juveniles weigh only 34.7 grams when they are born. However they will grow fast and gain 33 grams of weight each day in their month .
Males owlets weigh up to 800 grams at one month old.
Females owlets averaging 1000 grams at one month old.
