Beyond the Walls travels to Calgary, Alberta, on Sep 13 for a special service with the Leadership Team of Community of Christ in Canada and the Calgary congregation, reflecting on the idea that Christ “is all and is in all” and that we “have been raised with Christ.”
In Christian understanding, Christ is Jesus and so much more. The author of the Epistle to the Colossians, writing in Paul’s name, expresses a vision of disciples in the present sharing union in Christ, proclaiming: “You died and your life is now hidden with Christ in God” and “you have been raised with Christ.” He explains this idea as having “taken off your old self” and “put on the new self which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.” And since Christ in this way “is all and is in all,” worldly dividing lines are no longer operative, and we have become “as members of one body… called to peace.” This is an inclusive vision of the divine Christ, of which we are a part.

This year we are focusing on witnesses of God’s revelation beyond the four canonical gospels, including the letters of Paul, Hebrews, and letters attributed to James, Peter, Jude, and John. We will also read Acts, Revelation, and important early Christian texts not included in the canon: the Didache (or Teachings of the Twelve Apostles), the sayings Gospel of Thomas, and the Gospel of Mary (Magdalene).
