Similar to Jesus’ teaching that “love your neighbour as yourself” stands next to the greatest commandment (love God), the Apostle Paul teaches that “the whole law is summed up” in this single commandment. This statement comes as Paul is explaining his understanding of “Christian Freedom.” Christians are free from legalistically adhering to the hundreds of commandments set down in ancient scripture. If we focus on these, Paul argues that “Christ will be of no benefit” to us. But freedom from rigid law is not a license for self-indulgence, nor does it mean we are left without a guide to good behavior. Rather, in concert with the Spirit, as we align ourselves with “love” and as we are motivated by love to love our neighbours, we will act on that love. We will, in Paul’s words, “through love become enslaved to one another.”
