Over the weekend the internet decided Sony was reversing its 2028 physical disc ban, and that Microsoft's next Xbox, Project Helix, was going "100% physical" to capitalize on the backlash. By Sunday, an industry veteran was publicly calling the whole thing baseless.
So what actually happened? I went back through it. The rumor started on a Eurogamer Spain podcast relaying show-floor chatter from Gamescom 2026, got picked up by MP1st with an explicit "unverified" warning attached, and then social media did the rest. Meanwhile Sony's confirmed position hasn't budged: physical disc production for new PS4 and PS5 games still ends January 1, 2028. And separate reporting suggests Project Helix is more likely to lose its disc drive than gain one.
But I don't think the interesting question is whether the rumor was true. The interesting question is why so many of us wanted it to be and what it says about a company that has burned enough trust with collectors that a single podcast comment could spread across the entire internet in 48 hours.
In this one: what Sony actually announced and when, where the reversal rumor came from, who's pushing back on it, what Xbox really said at Gamescom about disc-to-digital and game ownership, why "100% physical" was never a realistic claim in the first place, and what physical media collectors should actually be watching for over the next 18 months.
None of the reversal claims have been verified. I'll be clear throughout about what's confirmed, what's reported, and what's somebody's guess.
