An attempt is often made by some Catholic apologists to demonstrate that Protestants can’t reasonably hold the doctrine of Sola Scriptura since their Scriptural canon is necessarily a fallible list. The argument goes: one must have an infallibly defined list of infallible books to be assured that the right books are included, because if it were possible for a single book to be included in the canon that ought not be included in the canon, then one can no longer be sure that the Bible is actually infallible. Therefore, Protestants must accept the infallible authority of the Church in order to ensure the infallible authority of the Bible. However, it is often pointed out by our Protestant friends that this would seem to imply a need for an infallible knowledge of who the True Church is which we do not accept. Thus if we can reasonably rely on fallible private judgments of the identity of the True Church, then they can reasonably rely on fallible private judgments of the identity of the True Canon of Scripture. However, in this video, I’ll give a more modest articulation of the argument as well as answer possible Protestant objections: You need to know who the One True Church is before you know what the Canon of Scripture is.
