“Sola Fide” is one of the five battle-cries of the Protestant Reformation (along with Sola Scriptura, Sola Gratia, Solus Christus, and Soli Deo Gloria). Oftentimes Catholics are accused of believing in “salvation by faith plus works” as opposed to the Protestant “salvation by faith alone.” Is this an accurate way to describe the doctrinal demarcation between our two traditions? In this video, I talk about what Protestants mean when they describe justification as by “sola fide,” the differences between the two traditions regarding what justification is, and whether Catholics can accept Sola Fide in a nuanced sense. (Hint: the phrase “Sola Fide” notably occurs in key Catholic thinkers throughout history such as St. John Chrysostom and St Thomas Aquinas).
