This wasn’t the fox spirit screaming in the latest Re:Zero episode—it was Anastasia. Her consciousness returns to her body after she has already been sliced in half, creating one of the most horrifying moments in the series. She wakes up inside a dark cave filled with miasma that begins to erode her mind, leaving her disoriented, terrified, and unaware of what is happening to her.
In a desperate panic, she grabs onto Subaru and begs for help, but it’s already too late. Her body collapses as her injuries become fatal, and Subaru ultimately throws her upper half away, leaving her final moments to fade into complete darkness.
The author heavily implies this was Anastasia through subtle clues, and in a Q&A Tappei even hinted that paying attention to how she refers to herself would reveal the truth behind the scene.
There are two main theories explaining what happened, both involving spoilers. Either Eridna was killed by Ram’s magic, forcibly breaking the possession, or the miasma pushed Eridna into madness, causing her to willingly undo the possession to escape the unbearable pain of being cut in half. This theory is supported by later moments in the arc where Anastasia is near death but Eridna still maintains control of her body.
