What happens to Natsuki Subaru 400 years into the future in the Re:Zero IF “Sasageru” route? This contains spoilers.
After Al seals Subaru and Beatrice away, they remain trapped for 400 years until a large, multi-generational effort finally unseals them. The effort involves Otto’s descendants, the spirits of Julius, and the Empress of the Unified Empire. However, Subaru’s body has deteriorated heavily from being sealed for so long, leaving him physically crippled upon release.
Following a devastating series of death loops against the Mad Prince, Subaru learns that the remaining five spirits of Julius sacrificed themselves to help free him. Combined with the realization that almost everyone he once cared about is long gone, this pushes Subaru into complete despair, causing him to give up on life for decades.
For the next 40 years, Subaru is effectively non-functional while Beatrice takes care of him entirely, including basic survival needs to prevent his body from deteriorating. Even in this state, the Mad Prince continues to attack them periodically, forcing Subaru to rely on Return by Death just to endure.
Eventually, Subaru begins to recover mentally after making a vow to Petra and the frozen Emilia. He slowly forces himself back into action, reconnecting his soul and body and relearning how to use his physical form.
By the time he reaches around 60 years old, Subaru finally regains enough strength and resolve to set out again, eventually managing to save Petra. According to the author, Subaru is ultimately expected to reunite with Emilia in the future.
