Some people are #touchblind, but that doesn't mean they can't feel things, they just have to use a different system. ✨ This episode was supported by Nebula! Thanks to the 2020 Pandemic we’re all at home. This can cause many of us who aren't sheltering-in-place with others to experience #touchdeprivation. A friend of mine casually brought up that he'd not touched someone in two months. That has serious repercussions emotionally, and physically! What happens when we don't Etouch for so long? How does touch actually work? What physically happens in our body when we touch another person, or a desk, or a blanket? Where did this sense come from? Does every organism have this ability? What cells make our skin so sensitive!? What happens in our brain when we come in contact with things?! What happens to astronauts who go months in space? Do they feel touch deprived? I have so many questions!

You'll get all these answers and so much more in this experimental series of #unodosoftrace! For the next week, each episode I release will dig a little deeper into the world of physical contact, touch and how it all works! I hope you love it.

Everything you ever wanted to know about glabrous skin
sciencedirect.com/topics/immunology-and-microbiology/glabrous-skin
"Glabrous skin is not a flat sheet. Moreover, the stresses and strains in skin are dependent on the characteristics of the underlying tissues, including bone. Consider the fingertips, which are the parts of the hand most commonly engaged in precise manipulations (Christel, M., 1993). The curvature of the fingertip varies, being relatively flat on the fingerpad and being highly curved on the distal and lateral parts."

"Whether you see the person you are in love with, try to listen to your own heartbeat, suffer from a headache, or crave for a chocolate cookie, one part of your brain is sure to increase its activity strongly: the insular cortex. The insular cortex, or ‘insula’ for short, is part of the cerebral cortex."

Everything you’d ever want to know about the studies regarding the somatosensory cortex.
sciencedirect.com/topics/medicine-and-dentistry/somatosensory-cortex
"Somatosensory cortex is one region of the brain that is truly in touch with the outside world, both figuratively and literally. Information about things that are touched, and what body part is touching them is represented within a structural framework that is somewhat the same across species."
