Why reinterpret Genesis to fit evolutionary theory instead of questioning whether the theory fits Genesis?

If God spoke the universe into existence, He could certainly create man from the dust of the ground. Forcing millions of years of death, mutation, and survival of the fittest into Scripture changes the clear message of Genesis.
