Have you ever proudly ordered a meal in French, but then the waiter asks you two or three quick questions in response, and your mind goes completely blank? It happens to almost everyone at some point, and itâs the fear I hear about the most from learners.
Itâs totally normal to read French easily, but freeze the moment the waiter improvises. It doesnât mean your French is bad! It just means that you need to work on your spoken French, not just your written French.
In this video, Iâll help you with the part that comes after youâve ordered. Iâll give you two small phrases that allow you to catch your breath and think before you respond. Then, weâll go through the questions waiters are most likely to ask you, so that you can anticipate them. Bit by bit, youâll be able to follow along â and even keep the conversation going!

At Comme une Française, we specialize in everyday spoken French. We focus on three unique aspects that are different from school French, self-study books, Duolingo, etc:
1. We focus only on the specifics of speaking/understanding/being understood in everyday French and have unique ways to help you learn it properly & faster.
2. We focus on shortcuts to help you make progress faster, which also means we tell you exactly what you can stop learning to prioritize whatâs really important.
3. We use French culture as the subject to make it fun and interesting for adults.
Take care and stay safe.
