This is one of my favorite songs to play and a beautiful melody. I press the A pedal down just half way, a bit tricky to learn at first, which gives me a nice augmented chord. I then slide up 4 frets and them down one fret at a time back to home position.
You can also obtain this augmented chord by dropping back one fret and pressing both A and B pedals while engaging the knee lever that raises strings 4 and 8 from E to F. I love augmented and diminished chords.
Try playing strings 3,4 and 5 on the 5th fret open, and then engage the knee that raises string F a half tone, while sliding up frets 6,7 and 8. Don't engage the knee until you slide to fret 6. Then once you've slid up to the 8th fret (with the F knee engaged), press down pedals A and B and slide up 4 frets to fret 12. Leave the 4th string raised while pressing A and B. Nice! You can keep sliding from fret 12 up to 16 and then 20, or drop back to fret 8 and then 4. Augmented chords repeat every 4 frets, and diminished chords repeat every 3 frets. The same is true on standard 6string guitar. Augmented and diminished chords are used mostly as passing chords.
I don't use these chords enough myself, but am determined to use them more. I simply forget. It's easy to get stuck into a rut in your playing, sounding dry and always playing the same things over and over. Using these chords will get you out of that rut. I use them in this song, which you can hear nicely.
I play a nice little piece at the end by raising the 7th string a half tone to G. I start by picking strings 6 and 8 together, with only the B pedals down. Then pick strings 5 and 7, then again with A pedal down and 7th string raised a half. Then move up to fret 4 and pick 5 and 7 again, with A down and 7 raised. Then back to fret 3, pick strings 5 and 7 with A down and 7 raised. Let off A. then pick strings 6 and 7 with only B pressed down. It sounds like a lot, but it's simple once you get the hang of it. It's similar to one of Bobby Seymour's endings. At least that's where I got the idea for it. Bobby's awesome.
