Everyone knows the inscription on the temple at Delphi. Know thyself. Almost nobody knows about the second one. On another part of the temple were two more words. You are. Nothing followed them. For a long time people assumed something had been lost, a missing word, a broken piece of stone, because the sentence appears unfinished. Eckhart Tolle suggests it was complete all along, and that it points at exactly what the first inscription was asking for. Because knowing yourself has levels. There is knowing your personality, your history, your patterns, the conditioning that runs you, and that has its place. But it is not the deepest level, and you can stay busy at it indefinitely without arriving anywhere. There is a simpler entry. In an argument, when you are angry and shouting, something quietly notices. It says, you are shouting about nothing. That is not the personality talking. That is awareness observing the ego, and it is the beginning of the end of the ego's grip. Follow that back and you find what he calls the deep I, underneath the surface self. To find it, the stream of thinking has to pause briefly, which is why he starts with the breath. In that gap, awareness stays but does not become thought. There is a space in you where you can be fully conscious without thinking, alert and completely here. Another word for it is stillness. That discovery matters, because so many people move through life feeling faintly outside everything, never quite at home. But we are not separate from what we come from, in the way a ripple is never separate from the ocean. The ripple is simply something the ocean is doing. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session. Join Eckhart Tolle Now to watch. 👇
