You are walking from A to B. Three hours, and you have decided to make good time. So you do not see the flowers along the path, or the tree, or the sky changing above you. You arrive on schedule, having experienced almost none of it. Eckhart Tolle uses that as a picture of how most people move through a life. Not just a walk. The commute, the career, the years when the children were small, all of it treated as transit between the parts that were meant to count. He is not suggesting you stop and stare at a flower for an hour. That, he says, is overdoing it. Just give it your attention for a moment. Acknowledge that it is there. Then carry on walking, a little more aware of the sky, the air, the whole place you are actually in. This connects to something he is candid about, which is his own experience of getting older. Someone stands up to offer him a seat in a waiting room. He drops something and a stranger picks it up. A young man overtakes him on a hill and asks if he is all right, and he replies that he is fine, just old, and that the man is forty years faster than he is. Time gives you things for a long stretch, he says, and then at some point it begins taking them back. That is simply how this level of life works. Nothing here lasts, which is why he suggests enjoying things without gripping them, and without asking any of them to tell you who you are. And why the way you walk the path matters more than reaching point B. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session. Join Eckhart Tolle Now to watch. 👇
