Grooveraider | Yoshi's Island North American Launch and Fundraiser - Circa 1995 - 2 of 2 @Grooveraider | Uploaded 16 years ago | Updated 11 hours ago
October 5, 1995, Nintendo launched the now classic SNES side-scroller Yoshi's Island across America. But there was one particular location in which the celebration was truly known - Toys R Us ( Culver City, California ). I was there to join the festivities for an assignment. Nintendo was not only celebrating a launch but they also held a small fundraiser for local Los Angeles schools. Selected school principles were to sit on top of a giant "Yoshi" dinosaur egg for 15 minutes ( in the hot sun ) before $500 was donated to their school. Also on-hand were a couple of local celebrities who showed up to promote the SNES game and the fundraiser: NBC's Weather man Christopher Nance and a radio personality from Power 106FM - his name escapes me.
In this second clip, Nintendo game conselor Sue Fox hosts some Nintendo trivia to the crowd. Selected kids from L.A. schools make preperations to break open a giant Yoshi egg to kick off the launch of Yoshi's Island for the Super NES.
Here's the flyer to this spectacular event:
