PART THREE
Yoga is the beginning, the source and the perfection of all spiritual practice. It is the path (marga) and practice (sadhana) that leads to true wisdom, to spiritual perfection and to final liberation. In this very special talk, Sri Dharma Pravartaka Acharya comments on the sage Dattatreya's definition and explanation of the path of Yoga.
"Dattatreya said: A yogi’s removal of ignorance by the attainment of true knowledge (jnana) is 'mukti', or liberation. This is realization of God, and separation from the three modes of material nature (triguna). 'Mukti', or final liberation from existence, comes from the practice of Yoga; and Yoga, O king, comes rightly from knowledge. Knowledge comes through suffering. Suffering is the outcome of those whose minds are engrossed with selfishness. Hence the man who desires final liberation should strenuously discard every material association. When material associations fall away, the mistaken designation that ‘it is mine' disappears. Freedom from selfishness leads, indeed, to happiness. The perception of one’s own faults comes from a state of detachment; and detachment comes indeed from knowledge. But knowledge is simultaneously preceded by detachment. That (Yoga) is one's house, where one resides; that (Yoga) is one’s food, by which one lives. That which leads to final liberation is described as the understanding of both knowledge and its opposite." (Markandeya Purana, 36.1-5)
