The Yakovlev Yak-9 was the most important Russian fighter aircraft of WWII, and is widely regarded as one of the best fighters of its time - outperforming contemporaries such as the P-51 Mustang, Spitfire, Me109 and Fw190. In recent years a joint US/Russian venture has been building brand new aircraft known as the Yak 9U-M at the same factory in Russia that produced many thousands of wartime examples.
