Designed by Sepp Uiberlacher, this plan is for a 82.5” (2096mm) wingspan 1:6 scale model of the famous Hawker Tempest V, one of the most powerful fighters in service during WWII. The big three-sheet plan includes full details for installing working flaps and retractable undercarriage.
Hawker began producing combat aircraft in the 1920's, and by 1942 had developed the Hawker Tempest from the earlier Hawker Typhoon, incorporating many improvements. Among these were much thinner laminar flow wings, resulting in an aircraft with superb performance, long range and the ability to carry a heavy weapon load. It carried out a range of missions, including high altitude fighter sweeps, destroying V1 ‘flying bombs’, and armed reconnaissance, seeking out air and ground targets deep behind enemy lines. The Tempest’s speed, manoeuvrability and heavy armament enabled it to successfully attack jet fighters such as the Me 262, often using tactics designed to catch them during takeoff or landing. A post-war development of the Tempest entered service with the Royal Navy as the Sea Fury, the last propeller-driven Hawker aircraft before they went onto produce the jet powered Sea Hawk, the iconic Hunter and the VTOL P.1127, prototype of the Harrier.
The model is of conventional all-wood construction. A laser-cut wood-pack is available which contains most of the shaped parts needed such as fuselage formers and wing ribs, but you will need additional sheet and strip wood and ply to complete the model, as well as all the hardware needed. A moulded plastic cockpit canopy and engine cowling are available for this model, as well an aluminium propeller spinner. The model was designed to be powered by a 1.5 - 2.5 cu in glow engine, but experienced modellers have successfully converted to electric power.
