The History of Kid Icarus - Full Series Retrospective | Rewind Arcade

Rewind Arcade 2023-05-24 | Learn the history behind one of Nintendo's most niche and neglected franchises from its humble beginnings in 1986, to its drought throughout the 90s, and its revival in 2012. This is the story of how Pit and his Greek mythology-inspired cohorts struggled for relevance over the past three and a half decades.

NOTE/CORRECTIONS:

1. The Legend of Zelda's Japanese title is "Zelda no Densetsu", not "Densetsu no Zelda". This got flipped around in the script at some point. Thanks to Omega579 for catching this.

2. I later noticed that SNK's arcade game Athena (or "Atena" in Japanese) released near when Hikari Shinwa began production in 1986 which may also have influenced Osawa's naming of Palutena.

The History of Star Fox - Part 1 (1982 - 1997) | Rewind Arcade

Rewind Arcade 2022-11-11 | The first part (of 2) that explores the entire Star Fox series from its roots with the UK-based Argonaut Software to the Super NES' impressive Super FX and from the cancelled sequel to its popular Nintendo 64 entry. The second part will be out shortly after which will cover Rare's strange GameCube platformer title all the way up through the franchise's divisive Wii U outing, along with some cameo appearances and fan games. This is the history of Star Fox.

By the early 1990’s, British game developer Rare, had already established an impressive catalogue of software for Nintendo’s massively successful NES console with hits like Wizards & Warriors and R.C. Pro-Am. Around this same time, a popular series titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had reached peak popularity spawning movies, comics, video games, and a hit TV show. Turtlemania was sweeping the nation in full swing by this point, bringing in boatloads of money to its owners. Many companies tried to cash in on the success of the popular franchise with their own versions of the turtles and Rare was no exception. In 1991, they began work on their own series featuring anthropomorphic animals, though there would be no turtles found here, but instead three muscular amphibians that would eventually come to be known as the Battletoads.

In the late 80’s, Square, also known as Square Soft outside of Japan, created a series that would forever change the video game market and help popularize RPGs around the world. This series would of course be called Final Fantasy. These games would take players on epic adventures that blended unique stories, compelling battle systems, intriguing characters, and expansive exploration. Many people nowadays think Square’s history begins with the Final Fantasy series, however the company had been around for nearly half a decade before the first game ever saw the light of day. It’s safe to say that the Square we know today, now named Square Enix, has found great success in the gaming industry and risen to become one of the largest video game publishers ever. This was not always the case though as the Japanese company’s earlier days were much more tumultuous before they finally found their golden goose, Final Fantasy. This is the story of a business that found success in the video game market, then nearly lost it, before an RPG no one had ever heard of would save them from bankruptcy. This is Square’s history before Final Fantasy.

In the early 1980’s, the adventure game genre was born bringing with it sprawling worlds and epic stories that people had never seen or experienced before. Throughout the decade, adventure games would slowly start to grow in quality and complexity becoming more and more popular as time went on. In the early 90’s, the genre really started to hit its stride with innovative and higher budget titles like The Secret of Monkey Island, King’s Quest V, and The 7th Guest hitting store shelves. It was apparent that these types of games were here to stay, especially with PC players. The early 90’s also brought with it another title that would leave its mark on the genre. A title that would utilize Hollywood writers and Disney animators. A title known as The Adventures of Willy Beamish.

Intro dialogue: Survival Horror. An action-adventure subgenre created in the mid-1990s to describe certain video games that would try to frighten its players using a variety of different methods. Quite often these games would be set in unsettling locations and try to make its players feel less in control by constricting their amount of ammunition, health, and inventory space. While a few games set the stage for survival horror, one in particular defined it, Resident Evil. The game shocked the world when it first hit store shelves in 1996 and inspired countless sequels, spinoffs and clones. Many people often consider the next 5 to 6 years after Resident Evil’s initial release to be the golden age of survival horror games with its sequels being critically acclaimed and other popular series like Silent Hill and Fatal Frame making their debut. Near the tail end of this golden age, however, one person was becoming frustrated with the Resident Evil series’ progression, its original director, Shinji Mikami. The man that would also go on to oversee and direct its fourth entry, Resident Evil 4.

The Forgotten Ys MMO - Ys Online: The Call of Solum | Rewind Arcade

Rewind Arcade 2020-11-28 | Falcom and its Ys series have a very rich and interesting history, but one game often gets excluded and has been lost to time: Ys Online. Finding details and footage of the game was incredibly difficult because there isn't a ton of information out there, but I wanted to take a quick look at a game that I was not made aware of until just recently. This video was a bit of an experiment and I'm not too sure if I'll continue doing shorter quick looks like this moving forward.

Introduction:

The year is 1997. 2D video games made using pixel art are now considered outdated and have mostly been cast aside by the gaming industry. The shift to 3D game development has fully taken shape and become the focus of most companies moving forward. Major franchises like Super Mario Bros. and Final Fantasy have transitioned their worlds and characters into the 3rd dimension utilizing the extra power afforded to them from the newest gaming consoles to hit the market. Things are different now. However, not everyone was conforming to these new standards. One team at Konami wanted to do things differently. They wanted to create something unique. Something new. Something that made use of older concepts and mechanics but applied them in a fresh new way. And they would do so using a series that up to that point, had refused to change much during the decade it had existed. A series called Castlevania.

The History of Super Monkey Ball | Rewind Arcade

Rewind Arcade 2020-11-03 | A look at how Toshihiro Nagoshi (of Yakuza and Daytona USA fame) rose to be a creative force at Sega and created a series that went against the current of what other developers were doing at the game time. I take a look at Nagoshi's early years, how the fall of the Dreamcast pushed Sega into 3rd party development, how Super Monkey Ball ended up the Nintendo GameCube, the game's launch in Japan and North America, and its legacy.

Introduction:

Over the years, video games have gotten a lot more complex, a lot more expensive, a lot more demanding. In their infancy, games stuck to more simplistic graphics and mechanics. This was not a choice purposely made by the developers, but instead a limitation posed by early technology and the lack of a foundation to build upon. As time went on though, technology increased at an exponential rate and video game concepts began to greatly build on the ideas that had come before them. By the late 90's, gone were the simple mazes of Pac-Man and the straightforward shooting of Space Invaders, replaced with sprawling adventures like Final Fantasy VII and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Video games were slowly becoming a media juggernaut that began to even rival the film industry. AAA publishers and developers were in a race to make the largest and most complex experiences. However, one studio decided to break what had become the modern trend and create a game that embraced the much more simplistic approach found in the earliest incarnation of video games. That game was Super Monkey Ball.
