This is the story of how Pit and his Greek mythology-inspired cohorts struggled for relevance over the past three and a half decades.
NOTE/CORRECTIONS:
1. The Legend of Zelda's Japanese title is "Zelda no Densetsu", not "Densetsu no Zelda". This got flipped around in the script at some point. Thanks to Omega579 for catching this.
2. I later noticed that SNK's arcade game Athena (or "Atena" in Japanese) released near when Hikari Shinwa began production in 1986 which may also have influenced Osawa's naming of Palutena.

By the early 1990’s, British game developer Rare, had already established an impressive catalogue of software for Nintendo’s massively successful NES console with hits like Wizards & Warriors and R.C. Pro-Am. Around this same time, a popular series titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had reached peak popularity spawning movies, comics, video games, and a hit TV show. Turtlemania was sweeping the nation in full swing by this point, bringing in boatloads of money to its owners. Many companies tried to cash in on the success of the popular franchise with their own versions of the turtles and Rare was no exception. Intro dialogue: Survival Horror. An action-adventure subgenre created in the mid-1990s to describe certain video games that would try to frighten its players using a variety of different methods. Quite often these games would be set in unsettling locations and try to make its players feel less in control by constricting their amount of ammunition, health, and inventory space. While a few games set the stage for survival horror, one in particular defined it, Resident Evil. The game shocked the world when it first hit store shelves in 1996 and inspired countless sequels, spinoffs and clones. Many people often consider the next 5 to 6 years after Resident Evil’s initial release to be the golden age of survival horror games with its sequels being critically acclaimed and other popular series like Silent Hill and Fatal Frame making their debut. Near the tail end of this golden age, however, one person was becoming frustrated with the Resident Evil series’ progression, its original director, Shinji Mikami. The year is 1997. 2D video games made using pixel art are now considered outdated and have mostly been cast aside by the gaming industry. The shift to 3D game development has fully taken shape and become the focus of most companies moving forward. Major franchises like Super Mario Bros. and Final Fantasy have transitioned their worlds and characters into the 3rd dimension utilizing the extra power afforded to them from the newest gaming consoles to hit the market. Things are different now. However, not everyone was conforming to these new standards. One team at Konami wanted to do things differently. They wanted to create something unique. Something new. Something that made use of older concepts and mechanics but applied them in a fresh new way. And they would do so using a series that up to that point, had refused to change much during the decade it had existed. A series called Castlevania.

Over the years, video games have gotten a lot more complex, a lot more expensive, a lot more demanding. In their infancy, games stuck to more simplistic graphics and mechanics. This was not a choice purposely made by the developers, but instead a limitation posed by early technology and the lack of a foundation to build upon. As time went on though, technology increased at an exponential rate and video game concepts began to greatly build on the ideas that had come before them. By the late 90's, gone were the simple mazes of Pac-Man and the straightforward shooting of Space Invaders, replaced with sprawling adventures like Final Fantasy VII and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Video games were slowly becoming a media juggernaut that began to even rival the film industry. AAA publishers and developers were in a race to make the largest and most complex experiences. However, one studio decided to break what had become the modern trend and create a game that embraced the much more simplistic approach found in the earliest incarnation of video games. That game was Super Monkey Ball.
