At long last, I finally achieved a time in 80 Star that I'm truly happy with. For a while I knew I was very evidently capable of a 1:06 time, but didn't ever imagine myself being capable of getting one this low. My original goal was to get a mid-to-high 1:06 time, but since this run could've very easily been a 1:05, I feel like I'll have to grind for 1:05 at some point. After a little over six months since I finished the final level, I finally uploaded this. I created this movie file on July 1, 2019 and finished it on December 12, 2022, but my first attempts at TASing this game go back to December 2016 (youtube.com/watch?v=du4dR2_dWSA). I definitely could have finished this run much sooner, but the main reasons for taking this long to finish are that I was still in high school when I began this project, and I experienced many lapses in motivation for TASing in general and frequently shifted my focus from this game to other games. However, I'm quite happy with the end result and I ended up learning quite a bit about this game along the way.
I am currently in the process of writing the submission text for this run for TASVideos, which will offer detailed explanations for all the tricks and glitches used throughout the run, as well as minor optimizations that may not be apparent to viewers. I got inspired to do this after reading a discussion about which characters are able to collect which stars and seeing that this star hasn't been done as Yoshi yet (shoutouts to Really_Tall). Collecting this star as Yoshi is normally impossible since Yoshi is unable to break blocks by ground pounding. However, he can break blocks by spitting either a bob-omb or a wooden box at them. I then got the idea to use the property where, if you are facing towards a wall and standing right up against it and spit an object, then that object will pass straight through the wall. After spitting the box through the wall and into the red coins room but not being able to keep it loaded, I remembered Adeal's scuttlebug jamboree video (youtube.com/watch?v=RvzAh1-haN0) and how he was able to keep certain rooms loaded while being out of bounds in order to move the scuttlebugs around the course.
Rerecords: 1791 Ended up getting 7th place out of 12 entries, which is a bit worse than where I thought I would end up placing. I thought about using Y run but wasn't sure if it would be faster or not. I made this in about four hours and it was honestly really fun to be able to TAS this game again

Start by closing the bob-omb's textbox, collect 5 out of the 8 red coins on the map, end by collecting the star in the middle of the stage.
Timing starts once the textbox is fully closed, and ends on the frame the character touches the ground after collecting the star.
The skeeters have been removed, and one of the box containing a red coin has been broken.

I really like how this level turned out because of a new method for wall clipping I found while TASing, which involves pressing A to morph into a ball as Homer while an enemy is pushing you into a wall that's on your right. Using this new method in the lava and ice sections saves a considerable amount of time from their previous strats.

For those who are wondering: yes, this is real. This glitch, which is called quantum tunneling (or just “tunneling” for short) was discovered by Really_Tall a few weeks ago, and him and bobbybob, Josh65536, and Migu helped me understand how it works. Basically, there are many areas in SM64DS where the seams of floor triangles don’t exactly line up, which creates a tiny gap that you can clip through if you have just the right X, Y, and Z coordinates and have at most -204800 Y velocity.

I'm still slightly struggling to believe that I managed to do this. I did this run last night within only 30 minutes of streaming it live on Twitch. This run uses a sideflip, dive reset, and mid-air backflip to reach the upper section of the rolling rocks room earlier than intended, which required me to perform three frame-perfect inputs to execute correctly. This run beats Rupa's WR of this star (youtube.com/watch?v=yxutS023hOM) by about nine or ten seconds.

Sorry for taking so long to finish this level. Lately, I've been more focused on speedrunning SM64DS. I'm very satisfied with how this turned out. This TAS beats my previous TAS of this level (youtu.be/dq5GCmqZ4Mw?t=202) by nearly two minutes thanks to the Free Buddha Glitch in the first two rooms, more optimized usage of Bart's grapple ability, taking less damage, and more optimized movement in general.

I'm honestly a bit surprised this hasn't been found sooner. While glitch hunting in HMC, I opened the gate to the Metal Head Wario Can Move star and noticed that the bottom of the left door forms a ceiling over one of the little slopes by the red ! switch. This made me think of the out-of-bounds glitch that p_yoshi found in The Secret Under the Moat back in November 2019 (youtube.com/watch?v=EVeT-0oXb9Q). I wondered if doing the same thing p_yoshi did in TSutM would allow me to clip through the floor in HMC, and sure enough, it did. Sadly, this doesn't seem to be useful for anything, but it's still pretty cool.

I'm really proud of how this level turned out. This is a massive improvement from my previous TAS of this level from three and a half years ago (youtube.com/watch?v=QRouVUD4eI0), mostly thanks to more optimized movement, better AI manipulation, and better camera manipulation. I started TASing this level in early April but stopped for a while mainly due to school stuff, but picked it back up again about two weeks ago. I'm very happy that I'm finally done with this level because the rest of the levels in the game use much more interesting movement and glitches, so stay tuned for those!

I got the idea to TAS this Star as Mario after seeing Migu do it as Yoshi (youtu.be/yJccdXzqVF0). The strat is pretty much the same, except for the fact that I sideflipped out of bounds (OoB), and that Mario can cling to the door at the bottom of the slide in order to avoid taking fall damage before opening the door, which is a few frames faster than falling straight into the door. At 0:18, I tried to dive and roll out on the corner while staying OoB to see if it was faster than jumping down, but I couldn't manage to do it. It may be possible to improve this Star by running on the OoB seam inside the chimney instead of jumping down, but I couldn't manage to do that either.

Also, the timer that appears above the video of the out-of-bounds swimming strat counts seconds and frames, not seconds and centiseconds, so the final time that appears reads "1 second and 5 frames". However, you can divide the number of frames by the video's frame rate (30 FPS) to get about 17 centiseconds, or 0.17 seconds.
In 80 Star speedruns, a glitch is used in Big Boo's Haunt to clip through the black block in the basement to activate the Switch Star without Wario. When practicing this glitch, I wondered if it would be faster to clip through the wall and get to the Star by swimming straight to it, rather than running around the merry-go-round room. Swimming straight to the Star turns out to be slower, which is a bit disappointing because I personally think it looks really cool.

No, BLJs aren't possible in SM64DS. I simply hacked my speed to a high value once I landed on the bridge to make it look like Mario was BLJing, and I hacked my position and angle when I was near the cage to make it look like Mario clipped through the cage. This is just something dumb I did for April Fools, so don't mistake it for a real glitch.

This TAS is much more optimized than the previous one I made two years ago (youtube.com/watch?v=VhMn_WMBO_I) because I used a faster method of climbing ladders throughout the level, I found out you can clip in the big statue at 0:37 to save a few seconds, and after I defeat Jimbo I skip the cutscene at the end of the level by pausing and exiting the level just before the cutscene plays. I'm very excited to TAS the next level because it has more glitches and more fast-paced movement to work with.

This made me wonder if it could be done the same way but with a shell, and sure enough, it can. I'm not sure if this is useful for anything at the moment but it's still pretty cool. You can also clip through objects faster if you jump right before pausing because pausing in mid-air allows you to unpause the game sooner.

The final time for this run was 17:12 because I started the run from a 0 Star file instead of a new file. This skips the 2-minute intro cutscene at the start of the game, but in order to have runs that start from 0 Star files line up with other runs on the leaderboard, an additional 1:56 (1 minute and 56 seconds) is added on to whatever time you got.
Warning, this part of the description is cringe: Happy 2020, everybody! What better way to start the new decade than with a new video after 3 months of not uploading? This run is about 39 seconds faster than my previous PB of 17:51 (youtube.com/watch?v=mNw5KE53UrA), and I'm pretty happy about it. However, there are still some mistakes I can improve on. For example, I choked pretty badly in HMC and had some slightly sloppy movement in Bully the Bullies. I feel as though Fire Sea went pretty well, the only mistake I made was missing the wall jump at about 10:12. I'm really happy I managed to get both Rabbit Clips on the first try. I also have trouble catching the upstairs rabbit, so I'm really happy I did that on the first try as well. I could've done the Endless Stairs Skip a bit faster after clipping upstairs. Also, I still don't have a proper microphone, so I hope you're able to put up with my phone-quality audio for a while lol
To summarize what I said in the video, you just run forwards for a bit, hold a backwards direction for 2 frames (e.g. Down), release for 2 frames, hold backwards again for 2 frames, and repeat for as long as you want. It's a very easy trick to learn and execute.

The game mechanic that is used the most throughout the video (besides backflipping) is the character's ability to dive when jumping from a backwards buttslide. If you ground pound on a slope that causes you to slide and you're facing uphill, your character will be in a backwards buttslide. From there, if you jump and then dive, the dive will launch your character forwards. Combining this with the fact that the baby penguin dives whenever your character dives, p_yoshi was able to get the baby penguin to dive in whatever direction it was previously facing, which ultimately moves the baby penguin to wherever we want. Some instances of this technique being used are at 0:58 and 1:23.
This was played on Version US 1.1 of SM64DS on my Nintendo 3DS. The final time for this run was 17:51 because I started the run from a 0 Star file instead of a new file. This skips the 2 minute intro cutscene at the start of the game, but in order to have runs that start from 0 star files line up with other runs on the leaderboard, an additional 1:56 is added on to whatever time you got.
I still can't believe I managed to PB by a decent amount of time from my previous PB (youtube.com/watch?v=9xqL5wS9_RQ), considering that I long jumped and bonked in HMC, missed a Bowser throw in the Fire Sea, failed the upstairs Rabbit Clip five times, bonked and fell down really far in the Sky, and missed a Bowser throw in the final Bowser fight. If I can manage to get a run without these mistakes then maybe I can get Sub 17.

If you want a quick summary of what I'm saying in the video, basically you release your forwards input at some point during your long jump for a bit and then re-hold that input so you don't lose any more speed. This no-input method causes your character's speed to decrease by only 2048 speed units every two frames instead of 6144 speed units with a long jump where you're always holding forwards.

All these improvements made this TAS beat my previous Land of Chocolate TAS by 1289 frames!
