Deadlines Have Never Been So Fun – A Look into the Life of a Costume Concept Artist
Gina DeDomenico has put in a lot of hours as a Costume Concept Artist and her illustrations bring characters to life and help define the look and feel of the TV series or feature film she happens to be working on. While the time it takes from initial costume sketches to the series or film appearing on screen can span one to two years, Gina truly loves the entire process. The volume of drawings and the deadlines imposed on Costume Concept Artists can be overwhelming at times but knowing how to manage time and keeping focus seem to be quality traits inherent to making it in this super ffast-paced industry.
Gina’s road to Hollywood is a classic “never give up” story and one we can all look up to. After graduating from Parsons in NYC, she worked in the city’s fashion industry as an assistant designer for a short period of time. Realizing that New York was not exactly the best place to live financially, and longing to create costumes for film and TV, Gina made her way to Los Angeles. Upon arrival in LA, she joined the Costume Designers Guild and created a portfolio of costume illustrations. Thankfully, her networking and art skills were well received; she was put to work right away, and, luckily for all of us, she has not looked back since.
Naturally, the drawing tools used for Costume Concept Artists have changed dramatically over the years. “The pen display has completely revolutionized our jobs,” says Gina. “Concept artists now can quickly create so many more options, comfortably and efficiently, for designers to review. Being able to work in 2D and 3D make the creative possibilities now feel endless!”
