The TL;DR is that Len (Letzel) gets murdered for the millionth time by Rin (Drossel), only this time it's revealed that he's a creepy siscon. All levity aside though, this song is pretty darn sad T_T

I absolutely adore the melodies in this one as well, which borrow heavily from Sword of Drossel (if not directly quoting). I dunno what you call this genre, baroque pop? It certainly sounds classically/baroque inspired with the instrumentation and chord progressions. That section from around 1:00 up until the chorus where it modulates constantly...love it.

Probably one of my warmest sounding covers yet, as this is one of those rare times where I'm not only playing in predominantly the lower register, but there are a bunch of low harmonies as well. Had to record numerous times to massage out the most glaring intonation issues, but I think it was worth it for the very cool sounding final product.

As for the running part, have fun guys! Bar 154 was a nightmare as I could not for the life of me get my left pinky and right hand fingers to move perfectly in sync repeatedly at that tempo. I also chickened out on the double high B; not good enough to hit it reliably in the middle of a run.

【Genshin】 Myriad of Lights, arr. Wind Quartet & Piano

ShonHayashi Clarinet 2023-08-15 | Going back to my roots an animu/anime-aesthetic inspired arrangement. Maybe you've heard of a small indie game called Genshin.

This rendition of the Lantern Rite theme stuck with me as it was the first to weave in a bunch of the other Liyue themes into a beautiful flowing and well-structured medley. The Qingce theme especially encapsulates that bittersweet nostalgic feeling you get when looking back fondly on good ol' times (like what I'm doing right now).

Since this arrangement came after the group/instruments were established, I tried to arrange things as idiomatically as possible for everyone. Lots of revisions made, but it's a pretty fun process. I also used an A clarinet because I thought the darker and warmer tone would work well (jk, I just didn't want to play in F# major on my Bb).

Thanks again to Tai, Robert, Joanne and Allen for humoring me with this little project :)

Mozart - Sinfonia Concertante in Eb major for Four Winds, K. 297b - I. Allegro

ShonHayashi Clarinet 2023-08-15 | Played some Mozart chamber music with this quintet of fellow community orchestra wind peeps!

"Chamber music" in quotes as the piece was meant to be a showcase for 4 wind soloists (plus orchestra), and as such the piano reduction part is pretty lackluster and nowhere near as engaging as his actual piano quintet. Thanks Allen for toughing it out.

We also spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to cut the exposition - final decision was to remove the entire orchestral tutti. Maybe slightly sacrilegious but imo you're not missing anything as all the thematic material is covered at some point.

Acoustics were less than ideal. All that reverb you hear (purely natural with zero artificial ingredients) also made it very hard to listen to one another. Maybe next time I'll bring some acoustic panels in addition to the mics.

Very fun piece. I don't remember where I read that the 3rd mvt was an 18th century drinking song in Vienna; we briefly entertained the idea of taking shots every time we made a mistake in the variations but unfortunately that fell through.

Mic stand wasn't tightened enough, so you can probably figure out the recording order based on its gradual drooping. Fortunately the difference in sound isn't too noticeable.

Lots of other challenges on recording day, including a bailing page turner and a very loud AC unit that once turned off made it very hard to remain at A440. Regardless, a big thank you to Allen and Robert for putting this together with me on pretty short notice, and Robert as well for doing his best cello impression.

Here's the lovely lullaby version of "Remember Me" from Coco, as sung by Hector to the young Coco - the preferred version for me and probably most people. Honestly kinda destroyed me when it was played 😭 Also highly relevant for these strange times.

Special thanks to Jobin for agreeing to do this with me! Due to the clarinet having the pickup, we had the brilliant idea of recording clarinet first and guitar second. Which of course led to me playing excessively with time (or is it just mediocre internal rhythm?) with no reference, and Jobin having the time of his life trying to follow along. Props to him for doing as well as he did! This was also transposed +2, hence the creative capo usage and the appearance of the clarinet in A.

Despite the copious amount of Audio Technica gear used, we were not sponsored in any way :P

Not super difficult to play, but extremely hard to play well with good legato and intonation (and so I doubt I'd be winning any auditions with this one lol). Better pray to the clarinet gods for a reed that lets you hit the p/pp high G's without going 40 cents sharp!

Mozart, Mozart, and more Mozart. These guys literally only want one thing and it's disgusting.

Here's the deceptively simple 5th movement Rondo from his 4th Divertimento, calling for huge dynamic contrast as well as a light staccato at a medium tempo and soft dynamics. Very difficult to do, since articulation naturally sounds heavier if the tongue isn't forced into short quick motions as it would be at faster tempos. Listen to that beautiful ping in the 1st clarinet's articulation...goals 😭

It's finally done!

Glad I finally got to perform the entire thing. Tremendously challenging and intricate piece, one of the great chamber works for clarinet. Huge thank-you to Lydia and Tom for toughing it out for the past seven or so months :)

This was definitely not the most in-tune I've ever played, but that's the sad reality when there's virtually no warm-up time.

Brahms Clarinet Trio ver 2.1

Still the same performance, only I mixed the recently released "official" recording with the audio from my camera. Did not expect it to turn out this well.

But, considering that the piano was mixed way too up front in the official recording while being almost nonexistent in my camera recording, it does make sense. The overly prominent mids in the new one also impart a lot of warmth that it was kind of previously lacking, and overall everything balances out rather spectacularly. Very satisfied, even if there are occasionally what sounds like phase issues.

Movements 2, 3 and 4 are currently WIP :)

Brahms - Clarinet Trio in A minor, Op. 114 (I. Allegro)

ShonHayashi Clarinet 2019-03-25 | Had the pleasure of performing a bit of the fantastic A minor trio by Brahms yesterday, at a student-run classical show/get-together. I just wish I'd known about this group while I was still in school :(

The piece is one I've known and loved for quite a while, and I'm so glad the opportunity to play it finally arose with my acquisition of an A clarinet and a willing cellist. Huge thanks to Tom and Lydia for putting it together with me. The last few weeks have been quite a scramble.

It's hard to top that autumnal feel of late Brahms, and I hope we were reasonably successful in capturing it in our interpretation. Despite the lack of overt pyrotechnics, it was a huge challenge to put together, largely because the piece plays out like an intimate 3-way dialogue as the melodies and countermelodies are constantly traded between the different voices. Not to mention the weird metrically offset melodies to throw off your sense of downbeats/upbeats. I certainly couldn't tell before having studied the score. Classic Brahms.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the piece, as I'll probably be sharing our next performance of it for the coming Sunday at the usual venue as well :)

Hauled my entire recording rig in to help with some audition tapes for the pianist. Sadly we're all kind of rusty with this, and combined with the slightly unflattering acoustics, neither of the takes we got were quite up there with the actual concert performance. Fortunately, it's not the clarinet playing that's being evaluated :)

Mendelssohn - Concert Piece no. 1 in F minor (ver. 2)

ShonHayashi Clarinet 2019-02-09 | Still the same performance as before, but this time with the properly recorded (and engineered?) audio that got uploaded not too long ago. I don't usually do these, but the improvements in clarity and dynamics were well worth it this time :)

The piano's actually audible, and it doesn't sound like we're playing underwater anymore, yay!

Upon hearing it again, despite all the little mistakes, this honestly might just be the best live chamber performance I've ever played.

Thanks for watching again! You may yet hear this a third time, as the pianist wants to record it all again for an audition :P

Oh, I am slain! No seriously though, when has a Len/Rin song ever ended well?

On that note, I'm glad to be finally going back to my roots and doing a Vocaloid song again, after how many years? I first heard this song back in 2012 and did a transcription back then, but never got around to playing it because a certain flutist from band said it was too hard. I've since lost the original transcription along with my hard drive, but after Kiwi expressed interest in covering the song, I drafted it up again. Finally, here it is!

This one was pretty brutal, from the recording of the 11/8 and D# minor sections to the mixing of five-part harmonies. Technical complaints aside though, it's a really pretty song from OSTER Project, teeming with gorgeous melodies that work so well with woodwinds. I'm always impressed by her works. Maybe this one's not the most jovial of songs, but eh...

Yeah, I've embraced the meme. Fortunately, the show turned out to be a lot better than I expected! Despite being a huge mishmash of shoehorned tropes, it's actually pulled off quite well and often had me in stitches. Also, Kaho best girl...although if ドS Maika had a clarinet... ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I think this is my first time doing a TV-sized cover! I'm not into the cover-every-seasonal-OP/ED game as that would be frankly quite boring and tedious (not to mention I only ever follow maybe 3 or 4 shows), but this song definitely deserves one. The much shorter than usual length expedited the practicing/recording process, which was particularly helpful as rhythmical tightness and articulation matching are so important in this one.

You can probably tell I had a little bit of fun with all the voiceovers and harmony lines :)

There are a few tricky spots in the transcription, if you're looking to play it. Bar 11 requires you to use the forked F# fingering into normal E#, and then switching to normal F# if you want to make the C#. The interrupted pentatonic scale in bar 18 might take a bit of drilling, as the E-Bb jump is a pain to hit at tempo (at least for me). Apart from that, everything else should pretty much play itself!

【Kabaneri ED】 Ninelie ft. Fesnir (Clarinet & Violin Cover) 【クラリネットとバイオリン】

It's done at last after more than a year of procrastination. Whew!

Transcribed this last year while the hype train for Kabaneri was still running. Sure, the show ended up being a poor man's Attack on Titan (as well as a train wreck) with Araki's heavy handed style, but at least the OP/ED songs were pretty kick ass.

This was a challenging mix in more ways than one. Balancing between clarinet, violin, and all the harmony lines is a delicate process, made worse by the fact that the instrumental itself was so bloody dense. For that reason, I ended up omitting the double "improv" towards the end. Not to mention taking my part down an octave for the final chorus.

And then there was the "oh shit" moment when I found out the original instrumental was copyrighted and resulted in the video being blocked in a number of countries. And so I ended up redoing the mix with a fan-made track (shoutout to Michael Pham, you rock). The atmosphere's not quite the same, but it's a damn solid instrumental. Here's the end product.

Noodling in stereo! Thanks for 7k subs!!!

Sadly I don't have anything prepared, be it a proper cover or a troll recording. Instead, I figured I could share some test recordings I did with stereo.

Got a budget stereo bar the other day, enabling me to hook up my old mic for a stereo pair! I'm still experimenting with mic positioning, but for now I've settled on this slightly off-axis vertical XY setup with one mic aimed at the lower tone holes and the other for the upper ones. I think like what I'm hearing so far. Gives the sound a bit more dimension, and the upwards-aiming mic really picks up a lot more overtones to give a closer and, at times, more balanced sound.

I went ahead and recorded a smorgasbord of different tunes, ranging from pieces I once had in almost-performance-ready status to stuff I'm just beginning to read or play by ear. You'll get a prize if you can identify them all~! Hell, I'll be impressed if you can even sit through the entire thing.

The AT mic was simultaneously routed to the left stereo channel as well as the mono track, so you can have a direct comparison between stereo and mono. Note that I did apply a touch of reverb to both tracks equally, as well as a low cut at 80 Hz to get rid of low frequency gunk.

Hola! It's nice to be back after yet another very long hiatus. This one's the first of an inconceivably long list of projects on my bucket list :)

I'm fairly certain that the legendary duo of Hayao Miyazaki and Joe Hisaishi doesn't require too lengthy a description. Any praise I can heap on them has probably already been delivered a million times already. But this piece (and the scene in which it's used) always melts my heart. Miyazaki and stunning flying sequences man ;A;

This marks the first time I'm properly recording clarinet and piano together! Long overdue for sure, as I find it to be quite a nice combo. It's definitely also a challenge to do so, arranging and playing all the parts, bringing out all the different lines...not to mention coordinating all the tempo changes. While the range of tone colours available to me is rather limited compared to what was exhibited in the original orchestral piece, I think it's a fair attempt overall.

Although the image quality is by far the best I've ever been able to procure, I am terribly sorry about the poor video quality. I was messing around with the autofocus settings on a new camera and didn't bother checking the results before finishing the audio mix (expletives were certainly thrown out). So, here I am uploading at 2AM instead of re-recording everything. Feel free to hop over to another tab if you find yourself getting dizzy.

ShonHayashi Clarinet 2017-04-08 | Found out this morning that somehow the phone mics were able to pick up so much more detail than the camera mic. As long as you turn up the volume a bit, anyway. Less muddiness, but also less fullness (whether that's a bad or good thing depends on the individual). Now, if only the picture quality was up there too... :(

Was originally gonna leave this as unlisted, but I think the image stability and better view of Tao dancing in his chair are worth it.

Shostakovich - Five Pieces for Violin, Clarinet and Piano

ShonHayashi Clarinet 2017-04-03 | Fun collection of pieces, probably as un-Shostakovich-like as Shosty gets. Here are movements I - Prelude, IV - Waltz, and V - Polka. Dropped the Gavotte and Elegy in the interest of time.

As this was originally written for two violins and piano, I needed to copy everything into Sibelius and transpose it. This meant a lot of awkward (read: nearly impossible) fingerings for the clarinet in the polka unless you had a really fancy clarinet with a left hand Eb/Ab key. For me, that equaled a lot of pinky sliding in the right hand :(

Tempo changes were really hard to coordinate, but I thought we came pretty close to nailing them. Glad we didn't decide to add even more rubato in the waltz.

This is also probably the first time you're hearing a recording in the hall from beyond the first row. Goodbye details!

Technical complaints aside, I had a great time putting this together. Props to Freda and Lawrence for putting a whole lotta time and effort into it!

Hard to believe that my last solo clarinet cover was from the summer of 2015. A lot's happened since then, but I'm glad to be back with yet another one!

This'll be my "Merry Christmas/Happy New Year/thank you for 6k subs/thanks for 1M views" all-in-one video. As always, I really do appreciate all the support and kind words ^_^

From the anime Your Lie in April/Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso. Quite possibly one of the most melodramatic things to have come out in the last five years. Though despite everything that's wrong with it, it also does a lot right, and it's beautifully animated. The last episode will hit you like a freight train that you can see coming from a mile away but can't avoid.

Honestly, this is my favorite cover I've done to date. Not the most technically challenging, but from a musical and creative standpoint I'd say it's far beyond anything else I've transcribed. I'm usually okay with two-voice counterpoint, but three independent melodies? Well, consider that I "finished" the transcription almost a year ago, but didn't finalize it until now, making edits here and there more or less constantly as I remember more music theory. I suppose I was getting tired of the same old "repeat verse 2x/chorus 3x" routine, so I figured I'd come up with a Nanairo Symphony that no one's heard before, that'll make you go "hey, that's new! I like!" To that end, I hope I'm reasonably successful :P

Since I wrote up a fairly lengthy introduction again, I can probably keep this one on the brief side. Unfortunately, despite trying to stall for as long as possible, it wasn't quite long enough for the three of us to really recover our chops from the earlier onslaught of the concert. As evidenced by all the peculiar sounds and notes not indicated in the score.

Shaky camera to go alongside a somewhat shaky performance! All shade aside though, it was still an enjoyable performance for me (although one of the other two might be inclined to disagree lol). Huge thanks to James and Kevin for working with me! It was a lot of nerve wracking fun, scrambling to put this thing together in less than a month.

Hauled my entire recording setup to a friend's place on Friday so she could test it out. Needless to say, we were pretty happy with the result!

Always figured I had a versatile mic, but I didn't realize just how good it was for vocals!! Even if said vocals are of some sappy Chinese pop song about falling leaves and stuff. At least it fits the time of year...Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians!

This was a one-shot, first-take recording as my computer was about to involuntarily restart. Which surprisingly resulted in a a great take, lending itself to easy mixing. Albeit with a few hiccups here and there.

Please do try to ignore the silly audience's poor concert (or recording studio?) etiquette.

ShonHayashi Clarinet 2016-02-29 | I'm surprised that more than 5000 of you are interested in watching some guy messing around on the clarinet. Despite my very infrequent videos nowadays, I am very, very grateful for it! :D

In order to commemorate this great historic event that will surely be remembered for centuries to come, I decided to make this 120% serious video. I mean, this is definitely my magnum opus. Forget Unravel, Leia, Senbonzakura, We Wish You a Merry Christmas etc., this blows them all outta the water with my impeccable tone and beautiful phrasing. The listener is transported to a fantastical faraway land in which he/she is gently rowing a boat up a stream while eating some impossibly delicious hot cross buns.

Different recording place because the Oscars were also happening (finally, no more Leo memes). Headphones and mouthpiece were also different from usual--no doubt those contributed to the hundredfold-improved sound and mix quality!

【Deemo】 Dream ft. Fesnir and Gabriel (Piano/Cello/Clarinet/Violin Cover)

Thanks Fes for the awesome video, transcription and for being 95% the brains behind the project. I'm merely re-uploading it here for 500% more exposure!

Do check out the rhythm game Deemo--probably the best $3 or so you'll ever spend on a rhythm game. If soothing tracks and wonderful atmosphere (there's a neat story too!) are your thing, you're in for a treat.

This waltz is the first song, and it sets the mood for the rest of the game perfectly with its wispy, dreamlike atmosphere. From the get-go, there's a sense of emptiness or incompleteness with the soft piano and sparse cello lines (beautiful playing courtesy of Gabriel), like fragments of a dream. The dream becomes more vivid and textured with the addition of the oboe (or clarinet, in this case), and gradually crescendos to a beautiful climax with the addition of violin. The clarinet countermelody in the last section is my original creation though!

Beethoven piano noodles

Apologies for my lack of regular uploads (and lack of any proper videos since last summer). School has eaten up most of my free time.

Anyway, as I was planning on playing a bit of piano in an upcoming collaboration, I wanted to experiment with some camera angles beforehand. So I went ahead and put a small excerpt from the beautiful 2nd movement of Beethoven's 32nd and last piano sonata to video.

Criminally underrated piece. Or so it seems at least, as very few people I've talked to are familiar with it. In my opinion, one of the greatest piano works ever, and certainly a fitting end to Beethoven's cycle. I implore you to check out the whole thing, played by a professional, as opposed to someone with no formal training on the instrument. Brendel or Uchida would be a good place to start.

This chorale variation of the theme is just...I've no words to describe how uplifting and sublime it is. Unfortunately I lack the finger dexterity to play the next section :( Would be nice to one day learn the whole thing (perhaps 10 years down the line?)

Hi. So I haven't had much time to cover anything lately, but I hope this'll suffice in the meantime. I do have a few planned for Christmas though, so please stay tuned!

I've always loved this arrangement of the theme song from The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, ever since I first saw the movie many many years ago. Its tearjerker qualities were certainly maximized with the scenes from the movie ;A;

And so I underwent the task of transcribing this one around a month ago, with the hopes of being able to cover it one day with clarinet and bass clarinet. Then it occurred to me how unlikely it is that I'll ever actually pick up bass clarinet, so here I am putting the MIDI up on Youtube. Perhaps it'll be of more use to you :)

Tried to stay as faithful to the original as possible, which I think I've largely succeeded in doing. A few harmonies are probably a tad off, as my ears aren't enough of an audio microscope to get every single detail right. MIDI dynamics and articulations are also hard to fine-tune, sorry!

I've wanted to do a clarinet cover of this one for quite a while now, but never really got around to transcribing it until recently. Partially because the show was a huge mess had a completely garbage ending which killed all my motivation, and also due to the fact that a high-quality instrumental track doesn't exist (no, I don't count the dubstep version -.-). But seriously, the song itself is pretty damn cool. Dada da dada dada da dada.

The recording, mixing and video editing process was a nightmare. Hence why I'm uploading and racking my brain for a description at 1:30 in the morning.

Regarding the transcription, easily one of the most difficult ones I've ever done. From the opening lick to the arpeggio hell at the end, there's tricky parts everywhere. Even threw an E7 in there to stretch the range to four full octaves huehuehue. Honestly, feel free to take things down an octave or omit the runs...but for those looking to test their chops, be prepared to annoy your family and neighbours to no end :)

I also encourage you to play around with altissimo notes to find a scream that works for you. Be creative! It's not hard to cause catastrophic amounts of aural destruction with the weapon known as the clarinet.

What do you do when you want to talk to a low brass player?

Okay, this one was pretty fun (and nasty) to do. It's pretty standard fare as far as concert band pieces go, with the clarinet serving as a scales/runs bot. Which also means that there are a lot of notes to transcribe (and I'm sure I made at least a few mistakes in there). Fortunately, they're *mostly* in easy keys and pretty much just play themselves. The staccato high notes though...geez.

I was in awe at the quality of animation in the series. I don't think a music anime has ever looked this good from a purely technical standpoint. Not to mention, in the one shot where they have clarinet fingerings, they nailed it ^_^

Botched a bunch of takes yesterday, and ran it some more with a metronome. I managed to miraculously do it on the first attempt today in a single shot! Fortunately, you can't hear the phone ringing in the second half...I think. Otherwise it would've been take 321996 orz

Forgive the few wonky notes. I think the recording might be tuned to A442, as notes that I'm usually able to play in tune sound horribly flat at times. Pretty happy with this apart from that though!

Sorry for the long period of inactivity, been pretty busy with other things. Although now that I've pretty much stopped playing League, I should have some more time to do covers! And I do have a few more planned for the summer ^_^

From the band geek anime "Hibike! Euphonium". The trumpet solo's from the last piece, "Crescent Moon Dance". I thought it was pretty cool how they recorded two versions of the solo for the piece on the OST. Covered on clarinet, because the show gave no love to us woodwinds at all :(

This is the first time I'm recording on the M15 mouthpiece that I got back in March, as opposed to the M30D I've been using for the past 2-3 years. It's a bit tough to play on, requiring some pretty hard reeds, and I'm only just starting to adjust well to it lol. Sounds gorgeous with the right reed though.

C. M. von Weber - Grand Duo Concertant Op. 48 (Mvt. III - Rondo Allegro)

Performed the Rondo from Weber's Grand Duo on March 29th, in what will probably be my last performance with the HHSB.

I was going to wait until I could get my hands on the actual stereo recording to do the video, but this camera has actually has a decent-sounding mic. I'm also not really looking forward to hearing the water clogging up my tone holes (and me trying to clear them out) in crystal-clear quality.

Big thanks to Lisa for playing the duo with me! It was a challenge to piece it together in less than two months, getting our 4th year comp sci and engineering schedules to line up. Not to mention finding good pianos on campus. A lot of fun in the end though! Hopefully we did not impede the practice of any music students as we pretended to be ones ourselves, appropriating their equipment and limited practice space.

Mistakes were made. Odd things happen when things go a bit too smoothly in the rehearsals right before the concert. But at least we recovered. Regardless, please enjoy!

Whew, managed to squeeze out one last cover for the winter. And a pretty tough one at that!

It's been over a year since my last Vocaloid cover, so I figured it's about time to go back to my roots. Since there aren't really any songs right now that I'm particularly keen on covering, I decided to redo one of my oldest covers, which you can find here: youtube.com/watch?v=MGmbCUO4cIQ

It's pretty cool to see how much progress I've made in terms of mixing and playing since then--although to be fair, a studio condenser microphone combined with an audio interface is a *fairly* large upgrade over a $10 mic that plugs right into the 3.5 mm jack.

Made some minor changes here and there compared to the original. Intro was a blast to transcribe, as well as the 2nd solo part. Surprisingly, the original solo has held up pretty well...I should thank Yuyoyuppe for giving me such great chords to improv over! ^_^

I was debating whether to give it a 4 or 5 for difficulty, since the majority of the song is pretty simple. However, the harmonized runs, odd time signatures, and need of either double tonguing or a freakishly fast single tongue (both of which I don't have) in the intro tipped it over to a 5. First one in a long long time. Knock yourselves out :P

All in all, I feel this is one of my best works to date. Thanks so much for watching, and I hope you enjoy it!

Not gonna lie, the show kinda sucked and I didn't like this song much at first either. But, as with many other Kalafina songs, it wormed its way into my ear and grew on me quite a lot. Must be the beautiful trademark harmonies. I just wish Yuki Kajiura would quote herself less frequently though =/

Somehow my mixes just keep getting more complex. This mix in particular was on the brutally difficult side, but I'd say it's my best Kalafina cover yet, page flipping almost-fails and all (of which the audio was removed).

I tried something new with the harmonies--recording the background choir vocals in the middle section three times each (as opposed to the usual two), and hard-panning two of them while leaving the third untouched. The resulting stereo effect... ♥ Even if I had to record the same section 12 times, worth.

I'm praying that SME doesn't restrict this and force me to pitch shift :s

Apparently the last video wasn't obvious enough of a troll video (probably should've tried puffing my cheeks out even more). Well, if you haven't unsubscribed yet, here's the actual Christmas thing! You can breathe a sigh of relief--this is probably the last Frozen video I'm ever going to do :P

First time I'm recording with the new ringless barrel! I doubt you'll hear much of a difference in the recording, but the smoother tone is quite discernible in person. Looks nice too :)

Vuelie was a pain to record. Took me days to figure out how to get the mix to sound halfway decent, and redid the 10 parts over and over until it did. At which point I said "screw it, moving on" and lip-synced (clarinet-synced?) the video.

Do You Want to Build a Snowman is more of a bare bones cover, though I suppose it's appropriate for the simple charm of the song. Wish I was better at the glissando so I could actually play the "hang in there, Joan!" part.

Wish the ending wasn't quite so melancholic, but eh...Merry Christmas, thanks for watching, and enjoy!

Suffice it to say, I've played way too much Weber to not come up with something like this. Although I feel this could be something he'd whip up for Baermann in under an hour while in a drunken stupor (whereas it took me two days to arrange).

I'll be honest, the performance itself is pretty...BLAAARRGHH. Came into it tired after band rehearsal, without properly warming up or tuning (not to mention I finished the arrangement 2 days prior, and we managed to rehearse it once). But regardless of all the mistakes, it's still a very special performance (and bday girl's pretty happy!) ^_^

Wanted to do something a bit different for my last video of the summer. A shoutout to all my Korean subbers! :D

I'm not particularly fond of K-pop, but there are a few groups out there that I do enjoy--the pop-ballad duet of Davichi being one of them. While it can be tiring to listen to ballad after ballad, their amazing voices make it all better (doesn't hurt that they're gorgeous either). My favorite voice in K-pop.

The amount of harmonies in this song is pretty ridiculous towards the end, and that lends itself to a grueling mixing session if you plan on doubling all the harmony lines. But I think the effort was well worth it :)

ShonHayashi Clarinet 2014-08-24 | Wanted to record something before school starts, and it's looking increasingly likely that I won't be able to finish my two planned covers ahahaha orz So, I decided to record a few practice (or rather, noodling at speeds higher than I can handle) sessions. There are a lot of hiccups, but at least I can now hear which parts really need work.

It's always fun to just rip the hell out of some pieces, but you should never, EVER make this a regular habit. Do as I say and not as I do--use a metronome and go slow :D

0:00 - Louis Spohr - Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in C minor, Op. 26 (mvt. 1)
It's pretty surprising for a dude who played the violin to write up four clarinet concertos. All of which are insanely difficult, and as one would expect from a violinist, are all filled with ridiculous passages that might be alright on violin, but are brutally awkward for clarinet. The editor even basically says "yeah we both know you won't sound good playing this, so here's an easier alternative" at numerous spots. But where's the fun in that? :)

4:29 - Claude Debussy - Premiere Rhapsodie
There's less fireworks in this one, but the real challenge lies with the breath control (which I obviously lack) required to play super high and super soft for an extended period. Although that's not to say it doesn't have a fair amount of nightmarish technical parts as well. Among the most challenging pieces of clarinet repertoire, and definitely one of the most beautiful too.

11:43 - Luigi Bassi - Concert Fantasia on Motives from "Rigoletto"
Basically, an Italian clarinetist from the opera one day said "hey Mario, look at me, I can play a billion notes per second!" and came up with this thing. Scales and arpeggios galore. I don't think it's even possible to play this without circular breathing (or having huge lungs), but what are extended clarinet techniques :s

And if you actually read/listened through all of that, props to you! ^_^

Shout out to IMSLP for providing us with such a huge free library of scores. Don't think I've ever spent even a penny on sheet music :)

A. Stadler - Clarinet Duo - Mvt. 1: Allegro

I was hoping for the proper studio mic recording to be up sometime on the website, but that still hasn't happened yet. Instead, you'll have to make do with the *surprisingly satisfactory* audio that was recorded by the camera.

My squeak was 100% intentional.

In any case, I thought it was a decent performance! Probably could've been better, but it most certainly could've turned out a whole lot worse considering we were both pretty much dead tired from the start (as this was performed close to the end of the concert).

I copied the sheet music as well (with some minor changes), in order to separate the two parts, and also because the original had too many awkward page flips orz

OMG DAT PIANO QUALITY DOE

ShonHayashi Clarinet 2014-07-21 | Can't believe it's been over two years since my last piano video. A couple of you were asking for another one, so here I am! :D

Got a shiny new audio interface, and this one has two working mic inputs (unlike my old second-hand interface). And so, I'm now able to record directly into my computer. In stereo. God, that crystal-clear sound, I can't... ;A; Never going back to the old miking-out-of-speakers ways again.

First piece is "Omoide wa Tooku no Hibi" (Distant Everyday Memories) from the short anime film 5 Centimetres per Second, a personal favorite of mine. This sublime version was arranged by Eminence Symphony Orchestra.

Second one needs no introduction. It's probably the only Marasy arrangement that I can even attempt though XD Played it in two takes, in the second of which I forgot to engage the pads on the interface. Since this song is rather loud (and the RCA output on my piano is fixed-level), we get lots of clipping even with the preamp gain turned to minimum :) Sorry!

No video this time because my playing isn't nearly polished enough to warrant it :P I do plan on re-recording both of these some day though, once I can consistently play them without mistakes!

This song needs more love. IMO it's pretty much right up there with Let It Go, but it feels like it's almost entirely forgotten while a myriad of Let It Go covers are being pumped out. What better way to give it more love than to cover it with two of my favorite instruments? :)

As far as fun transcriptions go, this one's close to the top of my list! The rhythms and timing were ridiculously difficult to get right though. However, the parts that *do* match up perfectly just make me think "AWW YEAH" XD

Finally, a huuuuuge thanks to everyone for 2000+ subs~!! :DDD

Props to Mikito-P and Chris for such a beautiful song and video. That warm and wistful feeling you get from the soothing music just matches perfectly with the imagery of a stroll on the beach in the sunset. And god, the prechorus chords T_T

Also I love this microphone. Works wonders for clarinet, and vocals sound really nice too (even ones as bland as mine! ^_^)

This is some next level bandwagoning, cause I haven't even actually seen the movie (although I REALLY do want to ;A;). Still, there's no denying that this song is beautiful, uplifting, and bloody catchy. Pretty much the ultimate "idgaf, I walk to the beat of my own drum" kind of anthem. Not to mention Idina Menzel's voice...holy. Sadly, I can't belt like her on the clarinet.

Apologies for the reedy sound. On top of close-miking it, I used a pretty hard reed, as everything else I stuck on there resulted in a laser-like quality in the higher notes--courtesy of my study and its fantastic acoustics =/ Oh well, once I get a new laptop, I'll be able to record in the living room again!

You might find the sheet music to be a bit difficult to read (I know I did). Probably would've been smarter to write it in double tempo orz Hope you enjoy regardless!

【Attack on Titan】 Vogel im Käfig (Clarinet Cover) 【クラリネット】

Can't believe I actually got this one done. On top of losing everything on one of my laptop's hard drives, the thing's temperature sensor broke, and so now the fans never kick in and it overheats as soon as I try recording, let alone rendering. So rather than put up with the rage-inducing laptop, I downloaded Audition and a ton of VSTs onto my old Windows XP desktop and recorded on there.

Anyways, I'm glad I finally got around to covering something from Attack on Titan. This is definitely the best track on the OST. "Epic" doesn't even begin to describe it with all the mood changes and that freaking ending...;A; I had a lot of fun transcribing it, as you can probably tell with all the markings that I never usually do (and yeah, I really did go to town on the last 20-ish bars huh XD).

Video quality sucks cause I rendered it on some free video editing program =/
