COVID-19 + Type 1 Diabetes : What Im Doing | Shes Diabetic
updated
New Year. Same Diabetes. I'm not a fan of extreme New Year's Resolutions - probably becuase I know I'd never be able to stick to them, and also probably because any big change is infinitely more complicated when you live with Type 1 Diabetes. However, I am a big fan of taking stock, reflecting on the past and setting solid, actionable intentions for the future. So in today's video, I'm sharing how I set goals, specifically relating to my Type 1 Diabetes, and how I create solid, actionable steps to pursue those goals, while including a healthy dose of room for error, fun, and most of all - prioritizing my mental health through it all.

Type 1 Diabetes is a notoriously costly condition to live with. But how much exactly? Where do the costs come from? In this video I absolutely bare all and share exactly what I pay on average per year to live with my Type 1 Diabetes.

My overall health practices that have nothing to do with my Type 1 Diabetes…Or Do They? ◉ Subscribe: goo.gl/ZfjYfu
Sometimes I think I get so focused in on my Type 1 Diabetes metrics that we all know so well (dosing, pre-blousing, blood sugar, time in range, etc) that I think I focus on those metrics above all else and forget that my overall health needs more attention. And when I focus in on my overall health, these seemingly unrelated healthful practices have a remarkably positive impact on my Type 1 Diabetes.

Just under a year ago I moved from the UK to the US. Having spent all of my adult life thus far in the UK, whose' healthcare system is funded by the NHS (Universal Nationalized Healthcare). As a result, I had no interaction with the US healthcare system or even paying for my healthcare...until now. Living with Type 1 Diabetes is hard enough, the American Healthcare system has taken this difficulty to another level.

For those of you watching on Publication Day...HAPPY WORLD DIABETES DAY!
Living with this condition is hard...really hard...and I'm in no way trying to undermine that difficulty, but it's given me a lot of positives and taught me a ton of lessons too that are so linked to living with the condition it would be a huge oversight not to acknowledge them.
I also truly believe in acknowledging the positives we can become stronger, more resilient, and can live happier, healthier lives.
Happy Day to you My Fellow Diabuddies

Carb Counting is a fantastic tool to have in your diabetes toolkit, but what happens when you don't have a nutrition label to read and extract the data from? How do you bolus for...an apple? Potatoes? I cover all this in today's video, with special feature of my personal favorite (not sponsored!) Carb Counting App: Carbs & Cals 🍎 🥔 🌽 🍅

I'll be honest...this video was harder to make than I expected! Thinking back to the time of my diagnosis where everything changed and my life managing this chronic condition began...it stirred up a lot of emotions. I have so much respect and gratitude to you all for sharing your personal diagnoses stories with all of us in the comments section of so many of my videos.
I hope this video reminds you that no matter how much time has passed since diagnosis, it's okay to feel emotional or overwhelmed with being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (or any chronic condition).
You are not alone 💙

I've been keen to do this "Assumption about Me" Tag for a while, so as to make sure you don't think I'm something that I'm not! I think often times, on the internet, and perhaps especially when living with a chronic condition we can look outside ourselves and think everyone else is doing better than us, stronger than us, just simply has it all together...
It could not be more important for me to debunk any of these assumptions about myself. This is a community for kindness, compassion, joy, and REALNESS...
This is your reminder today to know that what you see on the internet does not always spark a true thought. Have kindness with yourself and patience and remember...we're all on our own journeys and we're doing the best we can. One step at a time.
Come as you are, wherever you are on your journey...you are WELCOME HERE 💙

I truly believe that the way we bookend our day can have a powerful effect on our Type 1 Diabetes - not to mention our entire lives! From meals that are easy to bolus for to mindful movement, relaxed awareness of my numbers, and let's not forget - that favorite Netflix show that needs attending to (!!) - I take you though my evening and what I'm doing to try my very best to ensure a good night's sleep!
*DISCLAIMER: My Dexcom G6 is measuring my interstitial fluid – So even though I do mention ‘blood sugars’ in this video, my Dexcom G6 is measuring something different to what a blood glucose meter would. A Blood Glucose meter and your CGM will both give you a number. They measure glucose from different sources (blood and interstitial fluid), so those numbers may be different. As always If your glucose alerts and readings from the Dexcom G6 do not match symptoms or expectations, use a blood glucose meter to make diabetes treatment decisions.

All diabetics have a unique and varied set of requirements depending on what they want and need out out their device, so I can’t stress enough how important it is to do your own research in finding the right system for your needs. Choosing an insulin pump is an extremely personal choice, perhaps one of the biggest choices a Diabetic will make in his or her life. Since switching from the Medtronic 640g to the Tandem t:slim x2 , I’ve had a lot of questions about this process; how I came to choose it and what I like/dislike about it, so I thought it best to make a video about this very subject, with the hope that it will help others with their big decision. All diabetics have a unique and varied set of requirements depending on what they want and need out out their device, so I can’t stress enough how important it is to do your own research in finding the right pump for your needs. And I really hope this is a helpful resource in that quest!

Taking you through my AstraZeneca Vaccination experience hour by hour and then checking in days and weeks later. My experience was and has been...rocky. But as ever, I'm grateful for the opportunity to have access to the vaccine, and to the amazing NHS frontline workers getting these shots into our arms.

I love these kind of videos. I feel like it's the most collaborative I can get with you guys, and that is EVERYTHING to me! So I asked over on my Instagram (@shesdiabetic) for anything you were curious about and you really turned up with the intelligent, thought provoking, and just plain fabulous questions. I'm splitting this up into two parts because...well who likes to talk (hint: THIS GIRL!) so if you don't see your question here be sure to check out Part II.
As always, I truly thank you all for you participation - in the comments section here, on insta, and everywhere else. It's your participation and input that helps make this channel relevant and informative and I just can't thank you enough!

I always get a lot of questions about what the heck I’m eating - I think there’s a natural curiosity there for all of us to know what each other eats, because it’s so linked to the management and control of our Type 1 Diabetes. So this past week, when I was putting together my weekly grocery list - it struck me! These are the true staples I’m consuming on a relatively regular basis and therefore this list could make a good video!
So here we are! My staples coming at you, hot off my weekly grocery list! And for your convenience, I’ll timestamp each food, should you wish to just hop directly to that yummy morsel and my reason for it’s presence on my list!

New Year, Same Me! Come along with me in a day of ripped out infusion sets, my favorite protein bars, and of course eating - low carb edition!
I get a ton of comments asking if I’m low carb, keto or any of the various other diets floating around out there. Though I don’t subscribe to any diet in particular, these comments have inspired me to make a video showing you what a low carb day in my life looks like, when I choose to eat that way. I hope you find it useful and helpful!

Does anyone else find that a bad infusion set site placement can really cramp their style? I do! I've been on an insulin pump for almost 3 years* (hard to believe!) and I've tried a bunch of different infusion set sites - some work so much better than others (at least that's what I've experienced - we're all different)! So I decided to make this video featuring my three favorite sites and the reasons why I love them. I hope you guys find this useful and informative, and most of all are enjoying a wonderful start to the New Year!

This week I'm taking it back to basics once more with another awesome tool to have in your Type 1 Diabetes kit: Carb Counting!
Carb counting was introduced to me relatively early on in my diagnosis, but my serious implementation of it has taken a while to stick (yep - I'm that girl!!). Having really committed myself to doing more genuine counting and having a less 'by guess and by golly' mentality has been a game changer for me, and really help aid in my Type 1 Diabetes control. So I'm taking it back to basics and wanted to share my step by step guide to carb counting for insulin dosing!

Since losing my Dad a few months ago, my life has been turned upside down. I’ve talked about dealing with stress and overwhelm from living with a chronic condition on my channel previously, but what happed to me when I lost my Dad and as I continue to mourn his passing has effected my diabetes, and I’m trying to get to grips with how to deal with this and what to do to help my health - both physical and mental.
