In October of 1961 one of the most dramatic moments of the Cold War happened here and the whole world held its breath Tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union significantly increased a few months before when the Soviets started to build the wall and increased travel restrictions to enter East Berlin When the US and French tanks approached Checkpoint Charlie the Soviet tanks confronted them The whole world gazed at this checkpoint as American and Soviet tanks took up positions and faced each other with weapons primed Tense confrontation ended peacefully after Khrushchev and Kennedy agreed to withdraw the tanks and reduce tensions After the event Checkpoint Charlie became the symbol of the Cold War used as the setting for many thrillers and spy novels.
