Among Theodoric the Great’s greatest legacies in Ravenna is the stunning Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that still stuns visitors today.

Originally built as the palace chapel of the Ostrogothic king, the basilica’s interior holds something truly extraordinary:
🎨 The oldest and largest monumental cycle of New Testament mosaics in the world.

➡️ The top row depicts 26 vivid scenes from the life of Christ — the most extensive early Christian series of its kind.
➡️ The middle row shows solemn prophets and saints in rich, full-length robes.
➡️ And at the bottom, two grand processions: male martyrs marching to Christ, and female martyrs presenting gifts to the Virgin Mary.

These mosaics once symbolized the unity of the Arian Church under Ostrogothic rule…
But after the Byzantine conquest, the basilica was converted to Orthodox Christianity — and the story behind these mosaics took on a whole new layer of meaning.
