This is the W46DF 8L engine running a live demonstration of its loading capability with gas quality MN70. This gas quality is the result of blending natural gas with propane, which is one of the worst mixtures to have for the combustion. To perform with gas quality MN70 the engine has been optimized to control the combustion, and with this setup the engine can operate safely at maximum 90% in gas mode which means 8244 power (1030kW per cylinder).

The engine starts directly in gas mode without any liquid fuel contribution even with gas quality MN70 to guarantee a smokeless start. From 0 to 20% load the engine is deactivating few cylinder base on advanced patterns to drastically reduce the Total Hydro Carbon emission, by up to 50%. Thanks to the advanced combustion control of the embedded Automation System the W46DF can burn low MN gas quality and cope with the most demanding loading situation without the support of liquid fuel.

For this demonstration the Wartsila 8L46DF engine will reach the maximum load acceptable with MN70 (90%) in 62 seconds, with focus on the range where engine is usually used for manoeuvring. Engine unloading performance in gas is settled in 25 seconds from 90 to 0. Then the engine can be safely stopped in gas without the need to transfer in liquid mode.
The new Wartsila Automation System is capable of communicating directly with a on-line gas analyser to monitor constantly the gas quality and adapt the combustion to provide always the maximum power, loading capability and efficiency.
