This clip is taken from the video i did last year on the subject of the modern society's similarity with ancient Greece. In this clip i discuss the major role oral language played in the culture, litteraure, communication of ideas and philosophy of ancient Greece including the role of the theatre, storytelling such as epic poems of Homer such as Iliad and Odyssey as well as Socratic dialogues writen by Plato structured in such way that they could be performed on the stage. Socrates himself never wrote anything down and his practice of epistemology was purely oral.
In today's society, thanks to modern technology, written language no longer plays the major role in the way the information is being shared. Cable news and later on internet was able to reach more individuals than written texts. At first written language allowed the intellectual discourse and debate to move away from local towards international and global since the written text could reach more people. For this reason the written form has been more central and prevalent in medieval philosophy and modern philosophy.
In today's world oral communication of ideas achieved the same level of global spread, allowing the oral language to play a more central role in the development of human progress. Some worry that this will or already has a negative impact on people's attention span. In this video you can hear my thoughts on tis topic.
