In this video I break down every major articulation from the wrist to the fingertips - their anatomy, movement, and supporting ligaments.
Radiocarpal joint (Articulatio radiocarpea)
β’ Formed by the carpal articular surface of the radius and the articular disc (part of the triangular fibrocartilage complex)
β’ Articulates with: Scaphoid (os scaphoideum), Lunate (os lunatum), and Triquetrum (os triquetrum)
β’ Type: Ellipsoid (biaxial) joint
β’ Movements: Flexion (palmar flexion), extension (dorsiflexion), abduction (radial deviation), adduction (ulnar deviation)
β’ Ligaments:
ββ Palmar radiocarpal ligament
ββ Palmar ulnocarpal ligament
ββ Dorsal radiocarpal ligament
ββ Dorsal ulnocarpal ligament
ββ Radial collateral ligament
ββ Ulnar collateral ligament
β’ Capsule: Fibrous capsule reinforced by synovial membrane
Intercarpal joints (Articulationes intercarpeae)
β’ Between neighboring carpal bones in each row
β’ Type: Plane joints
β’ Ligaments:
ββ Palmar intercarpal ligaments
ββ Dorsal intercarpal ligaments
ββ Interosseous intercarpal ligaments
β’ Function: Stabilize the carpal arch and assist in force transmission during load-bearing tasks
Midcarpal joint (Articulatio mediocarpea)
β’ Located between the proximal row and distal row of carpal bones
β’ Not a single joint cavity; rather, a composite joint with an S-shaped contour
β’ Movements: Augments wrist extension and radial/ulnar deviation
β’ Ligaments: Shares palmar and dorsal intercarpal ligaments with adjacent joints
Carpometacarpal joints (Articulationes carpometacarpeae)
β’ Between distal carpal row and bases of metacarpals (ossa metacarpi)
β’ Joints of digits IIβV: Plane joints with limited motion
β’ Thumb (CMC I):
ββ Saddle joint
ββ Movements: Flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, opposition
β’ Ligaments:
ββ Palmar and dorsal carpometacarpal ligaments
Intermetacarpal joints (Articulationes intermetacarpeae)
β’ Between bases of metacarpals IIβV
β’ Ligaments:
ββ Dorsal metacarpal ligaments
ββ Palmar metacarpal ligaments
ββ Interosseous metacarpal ligaments
β’ Function: Stabilize hand posture and allow slight gliding
Metacarpophalangeal joints (Articulationes metacarpophalangeae)
β’ Between heads of metacarpals and bases of proximal phalanges (phalanges proximales)
β’ Type: Condyloid joints (biaxial)
β’ Movements: Flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, circumduction
β’ Ligaments:
ββ Medial and lateral collateral ligaments
ββ Palmar ligaments (volar plates)
ββ Deep transverse metacarpal ligament
Interphalangeal joints (Articulationes interphalangeae)
β’ Digits IIβV:
ββ Proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP)
ββ Distal interphalangeal joint (DIP)
β’ Thumb:
ββ One interphalangeal joint only
β’ Type: Hinge joints (uniaxial)
β’ Ligaments:
ββ Medial and lateral collateral ligaments
ββ Palmar ligaments (volar plates)
β’ Function: Allow flexion and extension with strong lateral support
Additional ligamentous and fascial structures (not primary joint stabilizers):
β’ Palmar aponeurosis β Protects flexor tendons and stabilizes soft tissue during grip
β’ Superficial transverse metacarpal ligament β Located at distal edge of palmar aponeurosis
β’ Palmar carpal ligament β Forms superficial component of the flexor retinaculum
